    Outstanding video. I may attempt this task myself, now. Cost for housing, pump and belt from Amazon is less than $100. I haven't gotten a proposal from the local repair shop yet. Thanks for the opportunity to save $1000.

    Thank you, Julius.
    Wish I had started my thermostat repair here instead of assuming it would be like every other thermostat I've changed in 35+ years. Bought the thermostat and got thermostat parts, not a whole unit. Why? Because Jag engineers in their infinite wisdom elected to have parts mounted in a plastic housing which reliably breaks at ~100k mikes. So I look for a housing, only to find that the complete assembly includes the housing, thermostat already installed, new sensor, and fresh plastic all around.
    Why do you want fresh plastic? Because, as Julius correctly and wisely explained, the housing is not the only piece that reliably fails!
    Son of a... Now I'm on my third go around. This time the whole thing goes in for roughly $70 instead of 2 pieces at $45. Even the math doesn't add up on doing it the reasonable way as we have for decades. Oh well. Live and learn. My next Jag will be so much easier since I've learned these lessons.

      Indeed that was my first go at it. Or at least those were my thoughts. Confounding but real. Probably a helpful thing to know on this model is, j never found a way to change headlights without removing the bumper cover.

      @@1sannn And now I'm in for the water pump, too!. Glad I heard slight increases in noise under the hood. Avoided freeway driving before I could get a good listen. Saw coolant dripping slowly yesterday. Ordering the part today. Thanks again for sharing your hard-won experience.

    Notorious constant issue is coolant reservoir lower connection nipple cracks whenever work is done on engine. Your left elbow resting on the reservoir is all it takes to make you think your great job was flawed. Replaced mine now over 7 times ... all with different Mechanics. Design flaw.

    • @stevestratos1538
      @stevestratos1538 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In addition, after replacing all coolant hoses to find a leak. It was the last Coolant line under the intake manifold. It required removing manifold. Heat of top of engine causes early failure and should have been made of metal.

    HI Julius. Very good video. I have a leak from my coolant system and I am starting to think it is the water pump. Feel pretty good about replacing it now. Did you have any problems draining the coolant?

    • @detroitforever5352
      @detroitforever5352 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here...I have a 2003 4.2l V8 jag. I'm sure it's my water pump. I'm curious if I need to actually take off throttle body to get it off

    • @1sannn
      @1sannn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have the car anymore rn, however draining it wasn’t much of a problem, to get most of it out we set up a siphon and had it siphon to a container below. Didn’t get it all but got the most of it. Burping the coolebt was the annoying bit.

      @@1sannn Excellent Vid as I'm about to undertake, as I have an annoying Sloooow leak from the housing. My water pump is fine but at 128k I'm thinking now is a good time to change it while bits are apart! I'll do the serpentine as well as all these parts are original. ONE tip / advice tho? You were mentioning the 'Burping' was annoying. IF you look at the 14:03 min mark of your Vid, do you see the little plastic plug on top of the reservoir ? where the small hose comes in from the Throttle body. THAT is there for the 'burping' ! Jag actually did us a favor there...Run the car with the cap off and keep adding coolant, when it reaches temp.. you can put the Cap on.. then slightly open that little 'cap' on top of reservoir and bubbles / air will release. Do that until they're gone. BUT I think you mentioned you dont have the car anymore ? sorry to hear.. luv these..

      If I had missed it in the video, may have if so I oppologise, I had a weak water pump also. How I figured it out is more so because I removed all the other possibilities. First the thermostat, then the aux water pump, then the whole thermostat assembly, then finally once I had removed the other options, well the water pump was the last item. I hope this helps.

      Plastic! Do not get metal impellers. The actual Jaguar part has plastic impellers. That should tell you a lot. Jaguar tried the metal impellers years back, but they stopped because of corrosion occurring within the part, leading to premature failure. Make SURE the one you get has plastic impellers.
