    4:04 That jump in his ERA should just tell you why a relief pitcher should never be considered for Cy Young. A low ERA looks great, but it doesn’t encompass anywhere near the innings a starter would throw.

      @InsertUsernameBrandHere ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't say never. I think a good closer is well warranted for a Cy Young considering they blow the breaks off teams constantly. Felix is a good example.
      HOWEVER, middle relief guys I might agree with you because normally they lack the depth/endurance to go the distance to start, usually only reliable for once through the order at most.

      @@InsertUsernameBrandHere Mariano Rivera’s 2004-05 seasons were his best. 53 Saves, 43 Saves. ERA: 1.94, 1.38. Innings pitched: 78.2, 78.1. CY finish: 3rd and 2nd.

    This is why I think we need the Reliever of the Year award to be treated like the Cy Young for relief pitchers. We have the Mariano Rivera/Trevor Hoffman Awards but nobody seems to care about it. Especially in this era where closers are much more the face of the pitching staff than even the starters at times and starters go all of 5 innings nowadays. Relievers could very well still win the Cy Young and walk away with both awards but that would just go to prove how absolutely lights out they were all season long. Let's give these guys like Bautista the recognition they deserve!

    • @NoelSchively
      @NoelSchively ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you're wrong.
      His success is because he has 100+ mph speed and then a sinker that drops off the table at 95. And he is so big that he's not throwing from 60'6" but closer to 50'.
      Batters can't tell the difference, so they have to gear up to hit the 102mph heater down the center, and instead it's 95. They've already started to swing and 1) the pitch is that much slower and 2) it just drops.
      Look for the sinker, and he'll hit you with the fastball in the zone.
      I've seen him get a guy by pumping 3 fastballs across the plate, getting faster each time, and I've seen him throw 3 sinkers that dart out of the heart of the plate and have gotten swings, and some that dart down and still stay in the zone.
      A good deal of this is pitch selection - largely Rutschman.
      Every once in awhile, the batter guesses right and makes solid contact.

    • @Tylerrrrrb
      @Tylerrrrrb ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NoelSchivelyyou’re wrong .. lmao I’m 95% sure he doesn’t throw a sinker.. yep “I’ve seen him throw 3 sinkers” yep.. dude threw 0 sinkers this year

    • @NoelSchively
      @NoelSchively ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, it's a splitter not a sinker. Still comes in at 90mph and drops. It's enough action and a big enough change in velocity that a lot of batters flail against it. He can drop it in for a called strike and he can get batters to chase it as it falls out of the zone.
      At the same time, he can pump a 100+ down the heart of the plate, or low, or high. The difference between the two means hitters have a hard time figuring out how to approach it, and they often have to guess.
      The assertion that he "barely throws any strikes" and if hitters just laid off they'd walk is ludicrous. He does throw strikes - and some of those are because they are guessing fastball and start their swing, and then the ball drops out of the zone, making it look like they didn't lay off. I've also seen it where they were clearly guessing splitter and the ball goes center center and they never get the bat off their shoulder.

      @@NoelSchively Yeah imagine writing an entire paragraph, starting off by telling someone else they're wrong, just to be wrong about the pitch, which is what holds your argument together. Your entire "analysis" of this player is wrong, nothing you say holds any merit. Take a seat, like Felix will be doing for the remainder of the season, and the beginning of next season.

    What sucks is that Gerrit Cole will win it, despite his team having their worst season since the early 90s, and Bautista will miss out, even if he helps the Orioles win the East by 1 or 2 games over TB. Even if it isn’t Bautista, it shouldn’t be Cole. He gets massacred by the Red Sox every time he pitches against them. The awards outside of a historic season should go to the player who helped their team win the most, not an out of contention team

    Eckersly and Gagne the only to RP to ever win it.. very hard for a closer or RP to win the cy young. Especially when you look at all the starting pitchers this year who are in the race for it. Doubtful he would have even been considered in the top 5 for the award this year. Amazing closer but very hard to do.
