I used to work for UCP United Cerebral Palsy, I was a Respite worker. One client, I cleaned her house. Child client with autism, I just spent time with and helped with lessons from class or PT. One client with CP, I helped in feeding, bathing, exercise, etc. I grown female with CP, I helped her with learning to be independent. She was in her late 20's. We went shopping and did as Summer does with Abby. That was in NY, when I worked at UCP.
I'm in NY and with the help of my daughters service coordinator we were able to get running boards on our suv. Mt daughter has CP so getting in was an issue for her. Absolutely seek the help that's out there in every state.

Thank you for what your family is doing. Pls give Abbie a hug for me. Wow I'm tearing up a bit. Luv you all!!!

In North Carolina we have more than Respite hours. My nephew gets CLS (Community Hours) and Respite. Then there's multiples of other types of hours too. All his medical is covered by Medicaid and therapies. They pay for his pull ups, a fence for the yard, alarms for the house. My nephew has the full innovations waiver so he gets everything available. And at 18 he started getting a social security check.
This advice helps so much!!! My oldest daughter was a premie, so she qualifed for disability. When I had my hysterectomy, I qualified for in home help, because my husband walked out on me after having surgery. I live in Washington state. I used DDD services.
Great advice Pricilla! We are so blessed to have 40 hours a week for respite, and day hab. Per week. Our Jocie is on the life time disability waiver that pays for meds, schooling, therapies, Psychiatrists, etc. I highly recommend that you get your child on the list. It has been a life saver for us!

Abbie and Isaiah are super amazing children and I just find myself I spired by you and your family and always end up binge watching a lot of your videos on my third shift job each night ❤❤
Thank you for talking about respite! My cousin has autism and she's in her mid 30’s she has never received a respite. As my aunt who is her mom is getting older she needs respite and they would benefit since she would qualify for crisis care. I sent Asa a message on Twitter about respite services a little over a year ago so this video helped a lot! 💖😌
NY has it and the paper work is so crazy that so many people just toss in the towel. If you manage to get through the paperwork, the waiting list is YEARS!!!
I live in NC and didn't know about the services here, except for CAPS. We don't need respite for our son but can you give more info on what else they offer? Thank you. My daughter's name is Colleen also:)
as far as the convo around 5:30, I think its like a NT child who has to listen to their older sibling while being babysat, but when out with mom and dad would think "Youre not in charge" about the older sibling. Summer wasn't the only authority, and mom and dad are probably a "higher" authority in Abbie's mind, just like an older sibling.
Exactly. When my 6 yr old autistic daughter is being watched by her 16 year old brother, she misbehaves n gives him a hard time if I'm in the house but he's keeping an eye on her or helping her so I can get things done. But he says if I have to run out/leave the house n he watches her that she's usually well-behaved. I've seen a lot of NT kids do the same thing.
It's like that in Ireland 😂 if someone said did you not check the weather I'd laugh at them and say its Ireland the weather changes all the time, the weather man as often said it would be one way and the weather ends up being different 😂 I remember it was due to rain the day my sister came back from a trip to Canada years ago and it didn't the sun was shining 😂
lol about the “can we put sweet tea in it? My parents now in their 80’s were traveling out west when we were babies. They had something go wrong with the car and my Dad put Pepsi in it to help them get to where they could fix what was wrong. True story.
How is that possible? My nephew poured a Pepsi in my brother-in-law’s old mustang and it destroyed the engine. The sugar melted on the fuel filters and formed a sludge that clogged up the entire engine. Are you sure it was Pepsi?
Awesome view and I’m landlocked. I love my mountains and see Pikes Peak looking north. You have fun no matter what happens. Loved that Abbie didn’t have any trouble walking on the bridge. I would go to the Pueblo Reservoir to celebrate my granddaughters birthday and felt like I was going to fall in as we passed the boats that were docked.
1000%!! Even if your child doesn’t have disabilities, almost all GP, Physio, Medical, Hospital admissions and surgery’s are covered in full by Medicare at not cost for middle class-low income earners. Even get $1000 per household with the dental scheme. We are so lucky.

My son gets services through early intervention right now cause he is under 3 but in july we will transition to the office for people with developmental disabilities(OPWDD). We just got approved for 4 hours of respite and we are in New York.
Super info for parents having children with disabilities. I saw in another vlog that your golf cart has a trunk. Next time you go out for food have a box and cooler with an ice pack in the trunk so you can put the food in the box or leftovers in the cooler.

I’m another summer! I had a neighbor who was in my class for my 6th grade year. He was mentally handicapped & also wasn’t able to walk. From knowing him & his family from school & being neighbors who lived down the street from each other we had talked a few times and I had told his mom that I babysat & had also taken care of my grandma when she was passing away & the family asked if I would be willing to sign up for as a respite worker so I could do stuff with him like go on walks (me pushing him in his wheel chair) & hang out at home & other outings while his mom could take care of the thousand things she had to do to keep things going! So I had to take I think it was two different classes at the respite center and within a week I was a certified respite worker & worked with him & his family for over a year! It was the most amazing job I’ve ever had! Not only was did I become so close to him and his family but I was able to help them out in so many ways! It was amazing! That was in San Bernardino county in California and he was over 18 too
