Pau outplayed Kobe in the 2010 Finals though, coming from a Lakers fan that watched 95% of their games that year, the strength of the team was the size and rebounding and depth with the big men more than Kobe. Kobe stans crying, shut up.

Anthony Davis was on the 2012 men's olympic team and he wasn't even in the league yet. He was a budding star fresh from college who would: a. benefit from the international experience as he was seen as a possible future anchor for the program and b. bring some extra eyes to the team that was already loaded with star power in the form of Kobe, Lebron, KD, etc. He was not one of the best players in the league, at least not at that moment. He was there so that the networks could capitalize on the recent buzz his run in the NCAA tournament brought and also to groom him for future outings. With all of that being said you mean to tell me that Caitlin Clark, arguably the most prominent name in women's basketball right now, the main reason the WNBA has garnered any sort of attention for the past 25 years, and a possible future anchor for Team USA doesn't deserve a roster spot but Ms "I was traded for a war criminal, I'm so empowered" does? The soccer thing at the 10min mark. The key thing is that there are only a hundred spots for RB at NFL. So, you could invest all your athletic career at RB, be the 100th best and not make a living for it. But if you are the 100th best at soccer, you at least guarantee a starter spot at MLS. The problem is that very rare for players start training late at soccer and becoming pro. Its very hard to switch.
I liked this idea more when you pitched to Handball at Olympics. I still dont understand how US doesnt have a great Handball program. Is just like, running while dribbling and jumping and trowing!

Kids cannot take up soccer in high school and expect to go very far. It has to start a lot younger than that. The best players are on the books at big clubs at 13-14.
And kids that age shouldn’t be fixated on how much money they might make in 10 years because most of them, even the 5* recruits, will not make it.
And it’s especially hard to go far in sports if you’re not passionate about it. So better to stick with the sport you like the most.

The Caitlin Clark saga only proves that women love toxicity. The main shows they watch are Real Housewives type “reality tv”.
I think this is the way the WNBA wants to market the league to get women interested.
My thing is that, it all goes down the drain once Caitlin gets over it all and either goes to Europe or back to Iowa City to coach.

Now they have a player that is drawing attendance figures the league has never seen. And they are not promoting that player? Instead they are psychoanalyzing why those new fans are watching it? Race? Sexuality? Who cares! You finally got eyeballs on your league and you continue to play the victim card.

I get the attention and growing the game, I don't disagree with the sentiment at all as that argument is correct, but not everything in the world needs to be focused on money, advertising, views, and attention. It's okay if we have one avenue in sports every fours years where we simply focus on putting the best of the best out there, figure out the best way to market it, and the views are still going to be there to some extent because it's the Olympics. Some of the women on the Olympics team do have a international following, I don't think Americans understand some viewers from other countries will be turning in. Will it hurt the WNBA some? Anyone who says yes or no doesn't actually know that. Clark isn't retiring, she's still going to be in the WNBA, if she develops into a great player still making those splash plays then the league will grow, especially if there are some great rivals along the way who help elevate the league as well. Short term will it hurt? Probably but again, not everything in life needs to be about the short term. After the Olympics are over Clark will still be a big time name and hopefully she can stay healthy, continue to grow, becomes great, and come 2028 the story line of her being in the Olympics still has the potential to be huge.

Imagine an American Ronaldinho that inspired the youth to pickup some 3/4 soccer pants and tear it up on the pitch with style and humor. Patrice O'neal had a funny rant about why soccer stinks and Americans will never like it.

the who’s the best player thing is a phenomenon that began recently in the social media era where people started solely being fans of players instead of teams. “who’s team is it?” “who’s their best player?” “such and such carried” is what basically began with the 17 warriors and has been a thing for every team with more than one good/popular player on it ever since. It’s just how young people view sports now unfortunately

Here's some NBA blasphemy: if you look at win shares, win shares per 48, PER, and those playoffs/finals match ups there's an argument Pau Gasol is the MVP/MIP of the 09' and 10' Lakers. Dude had peak Dwight and the Celtics bigs to deal with. Kobe without a top 5 big was a just a volume shooter on mid 40s win teams. Shout out Perk, we would have won if he stayed healthy in 10'.

Jaylen and Jason have NOT changed or grown that much. What has changed is the SUBTRACTION of Marcus Smart. He was a TERRIBLE decision maker in crunch time.Given a choice, Dru will always make the right play and the right decision, kinda like the opposite of Marcus.

.This Boston team is like the 1979 sonics, and the 2004 pistons as far as a championship winning team, with no unquestioned superstar/ #1 guy.
.I disagree with Bill. Isiah was absolutely the superstar/#1 on that 89 Pistons team(and 90) and Joe Dumars was the classic #2.
. I think Paul Pierce was the best player on that 08 Celtics team. Kevin Garnett you could say was the most important player. The Bill Russell of the team. But I don’t think either Kevin Garnett or Ray Allen at that point in there careers could’ve went toe to toe with young LeBron, the way prime Pierce was able to in that game 7 of the ECSF
. If Caitlin Clark had come on the scene 30/40 years ago, she would be one of the most beloved and transcendent athletes in the world. She would be what Tiger Woods was when he took over golf or what Mike Tyson was in the first 5 years of his professional career. But because America became the most identity divisive place on earth, she’s become the most polarizing athlete in the world 😐

I love Bill but the 04 Pistons argument doesn’t really here. That team didn’t have a guy who’s considered by most a top 6 player in the league. They also weren’t going to give max contract that player literally a month later. If Tatum is going receive praise about how good he’s been and how great he is, he also gotta receive criticism for shooting under 40% from the floor. Before the finals it was all about how good Tatum is and how he’s All- NBA First Team, now it’s all about team basketball and it doesn’t matter who the best player is. C’mon!

I have the impression that Bill does not really know the salaries in soccer. To make 20 million a year you have to be like a top 10 player in the world, only about 5 players not playing in Saudie Arabia make significantly more. American football is only played in one country, and soccer it is the biggest sport in about 175 countries. So the chances of becoming a top Football player are about 20 times as high as they are becoming a top soccer player. Not to mention the fact that the qualities that make you a good running back are not necessarily the qualities that make you a good soccer player. A lot of the best soccer players in the world are not supreme athletes.
The reality is that if soccer is not a top tier sports for young age groups it is impossible to get to the top as a nation. You might luck into some supreme talents and a golden generation that gets some result, but it will never be sustainable. Academies are great, but every country in the world has long established soccer academies, and almost all boys in those countries play soccer at some level from a very young age. That is also the reason that the US soccer women are in fact very competitive.

I check Clark's stats every now and then, to see how she's doing. Kind of interested to see if the hype is realized.
It's a nice sideshow for now. But, I'm skeptical it will remain anything more than that.
Tried watching one of the games for the first time in years (15?) and it was still very boring.
Even though I sometime check her stats. I wouldn't bother if media, podcasts, etc wouldn't keep bringing her name up & making stories.
I don't think she should have made the team. Girl is turnover prone. Needs to become a better ball handler if she's gonna get the spot. She's only recently started scoring more efficiently as well.

Terrible take. The Celtics identity… the reason they won… their TLDR, is not the Js. Not even close. Tatum is a well below average championship #1 the worst #1 in the past 10 years. The third worst in the three point era. Brown is an average/slightly below average championship #2.
The reason they won is that they have the best #4-#6 ever.

God, I used to read your column religiously. You were so much better at writing your column than you are at the idiotic stuff you do these days. You never should have stopped writing. That was what you were good at. The way you operate now is unbearable and the reason why you have nowhere near the fans that you used to have. I’m sure you have way more money now but at least you were a valued member of the sports media back then.

The real mistake is allowing pros to play in the Olympics and having to suffer through the marketing and puff pieces where the pros pretend to care. Makes those sports so uninteresting - bball, tennis, golf, whatever. Does anyone watch the Olympics live anymore? ✌️🪷🏀
