    Watching this video, reminds me of a truck that looked identical to this one, but had an E-7 400. Pulled like a team of oxen, & would haul a** when asked. Hauling black gold is a lot of fun!

    If you've got something negative to say about his shifting, don't even bother commenting. No driver is perfect...even my uncle with 30 years of driving under his belt makes mistakes from time to time, especially when jumping out of his usual truck into an old junker Mack. A Mack truck should have a Mack transmission, not a Fuller.

      Thought he did a bang up job, only one or two little grinds in there, normal for floating in a worn out 8 speed as far as I’m concerned. Those cabs are tight, especially the pass. Side with a stack, you’ve gotta be a skinny bastard to squeeze between it and the door.

      My dad was driving a probably 10 year old freight liner and it was kind of clicking like that when he shifted. He said the synchronizer was going bad in it.

    Seeing this now does nothing but amaze me, My uncle hired Cavallaro to help build that church you guys are paving in your video. Growing up outside of Glassboro NJ, all those roads are nothing but familiar to me. Driving by and seeing his Mack’s and old equipment go to work always brought a smile to my face. The building now is fully complete and couldn’t be done without your guys hard work, miss seeing the old iron going to work though! Awesome video man!!

    I know it’s late, but nothing wrong with grinding in an Eaton. That faster it breaks, the sooner you can put a Maxitorque in its place haha! These are some interesting trucks, we have one of these same year models with a dump bed for asphalt in our shop now. The parts lookup for it sucks though haha.

      @claytonbrown7100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is an 8LL similar to a 15sp deep redux? I've only driven highway tractors and never experienced an 8LL.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@claytonbrown7100 It's pretty straightforward. The 8LL has a low-low range. You only split low gear when in low range. Then you have the usual 1-2-3-4 in low range and 5-6-7-8 in high range, none of which get split.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't expect to go anywhere fast with it, but it will pull 23 tons just fine. Long time in between gears though, especially if it has a Mack transmission. This one had a Fuller transmission so it could be shifted a little bit faster.

    I drive two RD’s with the same engine/trans and a Kenworth with a cat and 18 speed. Grinding that 8LL says nothing about you uncle, from what I’ve found that’s just how they operate. We all prefer the 18 speed

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the 18-speed is definitely a better choice for this kind of work. The 8LL typically isn't bad but I just don't think they were designed for the power band of a Mack engine. My uncle had an 8LL behind a Cat 3406E in one of his previous dump trucks and it seemed to be a great combo.

    • @J.R.in_WV
      @J.R.in_WV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave's Garage how’s your rig set up to have 16 wheels? I’m not being an asshole I’m genuinely interested. The only ways I can figure is a dual steer axle setup in front with a lift axle with duals and tandem rears or a quad axle where one cheater has singles and one has duals.

    • @davidb1089
      @davidb1089 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@J.R.in_WV nope. Only some of my trucks have double steering and they have 3 liftable steerable axles. The wheel bases for the 16's are 265+ inches. They work lol. P.s it's actually a 2001.

    • @J.R.in_WV
      @J.R.in_WV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave's Garage wow, do you run all 3 cheaters on one drop switch and pressure dial or have one for each axle? That’s an impressive setup! Believe it or not where I’m at there are cases where you can haul more on a triaxle than you can on a quad or 5 axle. In northern WV they won’t let you go over 88,000 with 5 axles, and you can haul 78,000 on a triaxle, so we don’t have many quads and 5 axles, the extra weight from a 19+ foot bed and all that extra wheelbase and cheaters ends up being adding almost the extra 5 ton it gets you.

    • @MrSehka77
      @MrSehka77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, do you still have these trucks? How do they handle with all weight and this engine? Is it under powered ? How much weight do you haul 21 tons ? Also did you built these truck by adding 3 drop axles?

    Cummins engines in a truck never rolls coal because Cummins engines are eco friendly engines they aren’t meant to be powerful or reliable or strong they cost a small fortune to work on they are expensive to work on and they are an absolute pain in the butt to work on my dad worked on them he absolutely hated Cummins engines now the best engines ever built for those trucks is when Mack used to make their own engines for their trucks mack engines were built like a tank and you just couldn’t kill them and Mack engines rolled coal perfectly and had a wonderful sound it’s too bad Mack doesn’t make their own engines anymore they made the best engines of course Mack makes the best trucks still nothing beats the durability of a Mack truck even with a crap engine they still are great trucks

      According to my uncle, it's like driving a jail cell. He ran an R-model years ago and hated it. Personally I'm a fan of the R-models and don't mind the tight cab, but that's probably because I am on the short side and haven't had to drive one daily. Typical R-model, the heater box is up against your right knee.

      I'm convinced this one had water in it for oil...my uncle who has driven millions of miles over the last 30 years said it just didn't feel right like the oil in it was wrong. I was never a fan of the Fuller transmission behind a Mack engine anyway.
