To actually be comfortable enough to come on this platform and be transparent as you are being - in an effort to show the cause and effect of what this hobby can do to your finances…it takes a lot of gut. Amazing 👏 thank you so much for doing this for us. We are not here to judge, only to support!

My rule: One credit card only and pay off the balance each month. That accruing interest is a ticking time bomb. Wish you all the luck and glad to see you are starting to take back your life. You are doing the right thing.

This. If you don't have the money in in your account for actually purchasing a WANT (not a need), then you need to wait until needs are paid for and then money is left over for wants. I know FOMO and addiction can really get ahold of collectors, though. Always hate to see that happen. Hopefully, selling off a bunch and regaining control can help!

Awful rule. Debt, by itself, is not inherently problematic. It can serve as a powerful tool for economic growth and personal advancement when managed properly, as seen in examples like China’s development. The real challenge lies in how individuals or entities handle their debt-whether they use it strategically to create opportunities or let it become a burden. Effective debt management is what ultimately determines its impact.

In my experience paying off the balance every month has gotten my cards cancelled because they aren't making any money off of you. You should carry a minimal balance.

Just wanted to throw in that this took a lot of courage to share publically! I hope you still find a lot of joy in your collection by exploring the films you have and all the special features during your buying moratorium. When we're in that buying mode, the piles can grow and easily surpass our free time. Plenty of channels buy new releases, but I think videos about actually living with and actively enjoying your collection would be relatable to a lot of people. Good luck!

Mathematically that is correct. However, paying the smallest to largest balance will let you experience and see progress sooner and that is motivating. Yes paying the highest balance and interest first will save money in the end, but the risk of burning out is higher.

    • @HenryLaPierre
      @HenryLaPierre 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Sue!
How incredible you are to be so transparent about something so many people silently suffer with! My husband and I have been quiet viewers who really enjoy your content.
I think your acknowledgment of your situation and taking this step is great! I'm not sure what advice (if any) you're interested in hearing from others who have been there.
I was personally in credit card debt; I had a few different cards for makeup and clothing stores. After a few years, I could not keep up with the interest, and the payments were just sky-high every month. I couldn't afford to keep paying on them. Out of options, I talked to a friend of mine who works in taxes, and they told me to see if my bank offered a "credit consolidation loan," which is a loan through your bank for the EXACT total of all your debt with a flat interest rate. You pay off ALL of the cards, and then you just pay the bank back. It truly saved me from letting all that debt go to collections. I paid off my 10k debt in 3 years!
Like I mentioned earlier, I'm very proud of you for taking this step! And if you don’t take my advice, I'll still be cheering for your success!

Very brave of you to make this video. I have put at least $5,000 onto my credit card this year to cover my collecting habits and you just shocked me back to reality. I am going to cut myself off too! Thank you for providing the motivation and clarity to finally admit to myself that I am going down the wrong path. I have tried to stop several times the past few weeks but I keep getting into that spot where I'm like, "welp, this is just $10 it won't make a difference." Yes, it absolutely will because I will be in this situation again in a few days. I think what will work best for me mentally is to keep thinking about how I have more than enough movies and books to enjoy for at least a year before running out of new material so I just going to stop RIGHT NOW. I wish you the best of luck! Thank you for your honesty :)

As someone who doesn't collect simply because I cannot afford it, I often wondered how some of these TH-cam collectors pay for the monthly DVD and blu-ray hauls. I never imagined they'd be using credits cards. I know some collectors on TH-cam who must spend around $500 plus every month on new movies. Crazy. Good luck with paying off your debt.

I appreciate the honesty. This is a hard thing to talk about, let alone with strangers! I really suggest you consider consolidating your debt into a loan through TD bank or something like that so you aren’t still getting chewed up by those interest rates. It’s going to make paying off your debt a LOT easier. Once you have that loan setup, disable all of those credit cards or hide them away in a safe. Consolidating your debt into a personal loan will help you pay these off much faster! You got this!

I'm estimating you have appr. 220 Criterion titles in your collection. Some of them are boxes, like the Before Trilogy boxset. You can make a net profit selling all these for around 3300 dollars. Those 3300 dollars are about 12,5 percent of your total debt on these three credit cards. Sell everyone of them. You can buy everyone back in the year 2034. Do it, girl!

What I did was sell off a variety of things and pay it off in chunks, and once it got down to a certain level like 5k I called them up and asked for a settlement amount which was like 30% off but I had to schedule it in two separate payments. I wish you all the luck and focus to get this where you need. Taking the responsibility now is the first step and that's great.
My passion is vinyl records so I totally understand the cost portion of collecting physical media. One thing I did starting about 8 years ago was I worked part time (just 10-12 hr/week) at a record store. I never took a paycheck. Only took store credit lol. over the course of 8 years that has been 100s and 100s of records in store credit items...AND...I got to hangout and nerd in a place I would be going to anyway lol. Often the highlight of my week is going into the shop. I don't know your current situation with work as I'm totally new to your channel, but maybe consider doing something like that on top of your regular job... to hang around your fellow collectors AND "fuel the addiction" as I like to call it lol.

From a financial standpoint paying off the highest interest credit, second highest credit card, and then the lowest interest card makes the most sense. I think the ultimate turnaround for this would be you landing a job at Barnes and Noble. But in the meantime, transferring the balance(s) to a card with introductory zero-interest (some up to 21 months) would allow more effective payoff. Hope the next video is putting those cards in the paper shredder.

I’m sorry that you are currently in this situation. I don’t believe you owed it to anyone to reveal this debt, but I admire you in doing so because this might help/be a wake up call for someone else. Physical media collecting is a dangerous game. Especially when many people chase limited edition box sets and boutique labels of films sometimes they have never even seen. Everyone out there give yourself a hard budget of spending money each month and never ever budge. The movies will be out there. Going into debt for instant gratification isn’t the answer to fomo

Bah, a learning experience many of us have gone through. Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, I applaud your honesty in having this discussion in a public forum. This is the kind of conversation we should be having with each other. I've shared my dept story with my nieces, nephews, and my eldest child when he came of age. Credit card company tactics are a bit ruthless. It's not all our faults when this happens. Thanks for sharing and hang in there. You got this!

I admire your honesty, I have also been bitten by the collecting bug. I don't have credit card debt but I have spent over 25k in the past year and a half on media. I have got to the point where I want to enjoy my media that I own instead of buying new and not watching old. I easily have enough movies to last me the rest of my life. Best of luck Sue.

I've seen each of the videos over the last few days Sue and I wanted to say how much I respect you for what you're doing. Each video I've watched I've been so impressed by your honesty and advice. You know we all love ya and will support anything you're going through. To reveal this is really brave and selfless. You can do this. It'll be hard right now but the burden will get less and less as each month goes on. As others have said, I would happily pay for a membership for your content cos you're THAT good. We don't need to see shiny new releases - it's your personality that shines through and you can sit and talk about the weather and we'll watch. And anybody who is negative over this video? Not worth a second of your time. Keep being strong and awesome, and know it's getting better as each day passes ❤

Just wanted to leave a positive comment as I've enjoyed your channel for a few years now. Exactly as you said, once you start to see progress it'll make you that much more motivated to continue. While I am fortunate enough to be in a position not to have debt currently, I do have to rethink my physical media buying habits in the new year so this is motivation for me too. Best of luck and will continue watching.

    You got this, Sue 👍
Now is a good time to take stock in what you have. Make some fun small goals with watching all the movies you own. Really "breathe in" the physical display of each steelbook/special edition/collector edition. The stock cards, the inserts, or mini books that might have came with.
Focus on earning an paying off what you can in the meantime.
And enjoy life of course. Stay positive.
    We believe in you

Hey Sue, some nice honesty here. I think it’s something that a lot of us collectors secretly suffer I know I have in the past.
Have you reached out to your credit card companies. A move that could help is to get in touch with them, explain you’re suffering financial difficulties (lay it on a little thick if you have to) and ask them if they would be able to freeze payments and interest on your accounts. Some credit lenders are happy to do this rather than see the debt go bad a default. If you’re able to put a freeze on one or more of your accounts then this would help pay off one of the others a little quicker. I have worked in finance a number of years and doing this sort of thing is pretty standard for a lot of lenders.
Also, my channel focuses on some of the darker habits with collecting. If you wanna chat about it sometime just reach out ✌🏼

The best trick is to only use a credit card for things you can afford with the sole purpose of the card being to continue to build credit and receive any benefits. Pay it off by the end of each month to ensure you do not pay any fees.

I know in the past I'd obsess about collecting something as a sort of way to focus on something other than my anxiety. It's a dopamine hit to land something you wanted. Fine in moderation, but it's not a good obsession because of the financial strain. I've collected all sorts of stuff, had a Funco POP phase, a sports card phase, Vinyl records, Physical movies, comics when I was younger. I've always collected something, now I'm a little more restrained, have some coping mechanisms for dealing with anxiety and such (gym helps, I occasionally get out to a local place play a little pinball for an hour and it kind of re centers me) Collecting though, for some odd reason it creates a focal point, something enjoyable to think about, and like any habit, you kind of need some healthy things to replace it.
