      Hmmm… I’ve been hearing about being vegan my entire life and that’s closer to 60 years than 20. I do live in California though. We’ve always had markets dedicated to vegan and vegetarian lifestyles my entire life.

    Love it! This is how I farm. Nothing brought in, no fertilizer, pesticides, etc. The way to go. It's great seeing someone else do it! All the homesteaders I see out there are meat, meat, meat. Although I am not a vegan, I do occasionally eat meat, and I have chickens for eggs, I eat a mostly plant based diet and aim to do everything as naturally as possible! Thanks for the video.

    Wow! Wishing I had found your channel long ago! This is fantastic. I am in a few online homesteading groups and I get laughed at and told I cannot be a homesteader without animals 😂 I am a Vermonter but now reside in Scotland. It took some getting used to things being so different, shorter growing season, colder growing season, having to grow tomatoes in the greenhouse and if we want to grow corn, we have to grow it in the polytunnel as the season just is not long or warm enough. It is great for growing squashes of every description as we have such high rainfall. I don’t know why they do not grow more of them here (in the shops they still classify a butternut as an exotic vegetable 🤦‍♀️😂). I hope you are all staying safe in New England. This is the longest I have been without visiting my family in VT. Hubby is a research scientist and working on covid but has been working with infectious diseases and diseases with no cure for his 25+ year career, so as soon as covid was brought to light, we went into full lockdown as he knew what was going to happen with the spread. Sadly it will be a few more years yet before I can get back home for a visit. Stay safe, and keeping what you are doing!

    I bought 5 acres in Nebraska. I am situated in the middle of corporate crops. They have cropdusters fly over twice a season. I try to do everything organic, but I am not sure about the cropdusters overspray Any suggestions to finding out if my plants (asparagus, blackberries, apples, grapes, pears,) are poisoned by the cropdusters?
    I've lost several tress, I think because of the herbicide they spray. Ive been here 10 years, and the tree die off is recent. It breaks my heart. I have read about people suing the cropdusters that killed their trees. I am now 66, finally retired and wanted to concentrate on my land. So of course, I get cancer. Ugh. All my neighbors have gotten cancer too. Always wondering is it the pesticides and herbicides in the air? And ground water? Any suggestions from anybody about how I go about getting my produce tested would be welcome. Thanks!

      Sometimes you have to go to the source and demand to get an answer as what they are using. The are two approaches you can go about is being curious or concerned. Not sure if someone at the city level would be any help. If you must rally together and get a pro Bono lawyer involved. I’m sorry for what your going through. 🙏🏼

    Hello. I'm an ethical vegan. I'm not really a homesteader, but I do own a home, and I'm interested in taking small gradual steps to more self-sufficiency. What are your thoughts on freezing harvests in plastic freezer bags. I think they have BPA-free plastic bags now, but I've seen them criticized, supposedly by hardcore anti-plastic people. Do you think their dangers are exaggerated? Do you use them yourself?

    • @LookAliveYoga
      @LookAliveYoga ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, I use reusuable plastic type bags that I got on amazon 4 or 5 years ago. Ihave seen them everywhere now though. I use them daily on the go, in the freezer and the fridge. They have really held up, I freeze chopped peppers, carrots, fruits, tomato sauce and veggie stock all made from our gardens. I understand the concerns about plastic, but I would do the best you can. I hope this helps.

    • @jethrobodine9155
      @jethrobodine9155 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LookAliveYoga Thanks. I'm not really very concerned about them myself, since I freeze things in the bags come in. I'm just trying to sort out the hype from facts.

    There is a burning question i really wish to ask, how did Joe manage to get his B12 nutrition in a vegan homestead? Especially back in the day when he started? Is it possible to fortify your own nutritional yeast or perhaps there is a yeast type that exists with B12?

    I always been into homesteading for a while now and kinda get confused at how almost every homesteaders was very focused on raising animals. It’s significantly more difficult than living off plants instead, especially with permaculture that doesn’t require much direct attention. Less land needed, less money needed, and less work.

    I know sweet potatoes is suppose to be better for your health, but give me potatoes, norlands, viking, kenebec. My wife is from the Philippines and the part she lives in cannot produce potatoes very well. So she likes sweet potatoes, (more than I do at least).

  • @1b2m

    So in a way, he uses water snakes and frogs as pest control, at least he says so. Isn't using animals against vegan ethics? If Avocados aren't vegan because humans transport bee hives around for targeted Avocado pollination, then certainly relying on snakes and frogs as pest eaters (even if they do it voluntarily) also can't be truly vegan?

    • @angelocarantino4803
      @angelocarantino4803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exploitation is what your trying to avoid. I don't think transporting bees is bad, it's the fact they're being exploited for their resources that is bad. That practice is associated with the avocados so they are considered a by product of animal exploitation. Letting snakes do what they'll do anyway isn't exploiting them

    • @FKBUSH1
      @FKBUSH1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @godemperormeow8591
      @godemperormeow8591 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe vegan farms don't really exist but are just "better farms"? Better farming practices? If I have pest problems: there are spiders, birds, snakes, and frogs that offer free, automatist 24/7 support. Why use cow manure when I can dump a gazillion more nutrients onto the soil with everyday beans?
