wow i love how you set up your reading journal! the series tracker!!! i have some reading journal-type things in my bullet journal (daily page counts, ratings, monthly purchased books, monthly library books, etc) and a whole notebook where i’m keeping my thoughts while reading each book this year! TOTALLY with you on starting journals and never seeing them through, so we got this! i’m looking forward to your upcoming journal flip through that BETTER come 💗💗💗 P.S. i’m such an overplanner too so dang your pep talk hit home
Planning for failure... That's my sort of planning. I actually planned giving up my reading journal _before_ I started writing it. Very efficient, if I do say so myself.
For your reading journal, I recommend setting a reminder on your phone once or twice a week just to remind you to complete your journal if you’ve forgotten. It will hopefully get you into the habit of making time for it too! I don’t have a reading journal but I try to write in my diary/journal every day or every few days but life gets busy and I forget, so I have a reminder on my phone for when I’m the least busy so I can hopefully sit down and write and get my feelings out and it got me into the habit of writing in it more regularly!
Pretend you're good at it sounds better than fake it till you make it. It's awesome that you share both you're goals and struggles with us, makes it so much more relatable. Thanks Jesse ❤️
I don’t keep a book journal but I do keep a book timeline. Because I read so many classics, I was interested to see which of them overlapped on release dates and then I write in when books are set too so I can flip back and see what books were actually WRITTEN during that time. I update it about once every two months. It’s been a super interesting project. (Most interesting to me is that Dracula was published around the same time as most of HG Wells’ work. Also that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde overlap. Dunno, just cool to me.)
I have a reading journal in my bullet journal and use it for a year now. It's pretty interesting when you see the statistics and how school sucks and keeps you always from reading
I SO feel you when it comes to goals. Learning to lift the pressure off of myself to be perfect and and to do what I think I "SHOULD" do (even in my reading life) and what I really want to do. It makes life so much easier when I'm just being myself and taking things one moment at a time!
I love how you structured your bookish journal! I think I might try that because it seems fun to log in all the books I read in 2019, insert my favorite quotes, etc !
I HIGHLY recommend you check out A Work in Progress by Connor Franta, or Note to Self by Connor Franta. He's also a TH-camr (I tend to gravitate towards TH-camr memoirs since I'm more familiar with the people they're about). He has this weird ability of making you feel like you're not alone and when I first read A Work in Progress, it really inspired me to get up and be productive, haha! Also, you talking about overplanning/overworking yourself spoke to me on such a personal level. I tend to overthink WAY too much and it's definitely something I plan on working on this year. Gotta stop pointing out what we could've done better and start giving ourselves more credit for the amazing stuff we do instead! :)
i really needed that little bit about being kinder to yourself. i over-plan and overwork myself as well, and always end up not getting a lot of what i said i'd get done, done. even if i do accomplish something - big or small - it feels like i just procrastinated too much and wasn't at all productive. it really helps to know you feel that way sometimes too, and hopefully, we'll both be able to learn how to be kinder to ourselves and respect our limits and acknowledge our accomplishments ♥
I also keep a reading journal. Mine is- “the book lovers journal. My personal reading record”. Found it online and started it February 2018. I came across it online and thought “I need that” and it’s helped me keep track of my reading since. It has soooo much in it from info on the book(s) you are currently reading, lent out/borrowed books, books you want to read, suggestions for books to read, contacts for book groups/book friends and other stuff.
I love the moments when you share your reflections on brain, society, loving yourself and those kinds of things. You're really thoughtful and I appreciate your take on those things, I agree with many. And maybe you need to hear this from someone else - be kinder for yourself. You work extremely hard and put so much passion into your videos, it floats from them. For me, you're even more than good enough - you go beyond the expectations and work on every detail. Your content truly is a treasure. Your personality gives them even more charm, since you're funny yet thoughtful and super nice. Don't be so hard on yourself ❤️
A really great memoir is ‘Because We Are Bad’ by Lily Bailey! It’s such an incredible memoir about Lily’s struggle with OCD. Also ‘Reasons To Stay Alive’ by Matt Haig is a great memoir about depression and anxiety!
Yes, the reading journal does make sense. It makes sense to me, anyway, because I absolutely adore journals for some reason. And notebooks in general. I need a reading journal now. Can't believe I never thought of that before.
I am just currently keeping track of my reading in my regular journal cuz it’s easier to keep it all together since I can write down my thoughts whenever I am cuz I keep it with me all the time. Thanks Jesse I love ur videos
Furiously Happy is sooooo good!!!! I’m a psychology obsessive, which may be why, but I hope you love it too! Happy reading! Also your journal is so esthetic!
I started a reading journal just before this last Christmas, and I am really liking it. I had a Miss. Peregrine's journal for the longest time that I didn't know what I wanted to do with until one day the thought popped into my head to start a reading journal.
I had an empty journal that I didn't know what to do with, and you just inspired my to make a reading journal! I'm currently working on the first page. Thanks, Jessie!
This video just inspired me to make a reading journal section apart of my journal where I put my random thoughts, which will really hello since one of my resolutions was to read more and more diverse
I’ve been wanting to get a reading journal and I hope to get one soon! I think it will be perfect since I make a of notes on my phone about books so maybe I could find someplace to keep the books I want to read for a whike
Persepolis is a great memoir and it hits some of your goals! It’s a graphic memoir written by a POC (Iranian) author. It’s about her life growing up through the Iranian revolution. Also hot tip: I’ve only seen booktubers talk about the first 2 parts, there’s actually four! They’re in a bind up called The Complete Persepolis, together they tell her whole life story. I really enjoyed it, and I think you would too!!
I started a reading journal at the start of the year, and so far so good. I don't write tbr's or goals, only thoughts and reviews, and keep it super minimalistic (name of the book, author, date and raiting). I think that's the reason I've been able to keep it up. Don't worry to much about the esthetic and detail... if your making it, do it for yourself , and not for a flip through in the end. If you like putting all the stickers and pictures, that's super cool! You do you. But if you find yourself feeling like it's a chore and you don't feel like it, or you read a sartain book and you don't want to write about it, you can simply write "I read this, it was okay/loved it/bad" or something simple like that. Basically do whatever you want. I have a 20 page review for six of crows, and then half a sentence on to all the boys I've loved before. That point is, don't feel pressured to make this really pretty cool book. If you make something and want to keep it to yourself, do that. It's better to make something then nothing, even if it's not much, especially when it's something your trying to commit to!😁
I have been keeping a reading journal for a year already, and I really like it. I recommend starting small because in the start is hard to remember to do it. So add things later. So I started by just having my thoughts, tbr and wrap ups in a very simple way. Now I’m trying bullet journal, it didn’t work this month but I’m going to try it again next month and I think I might be adding more things to my reading journal and if you, person who is reading this, does a book journal tell me what I should add. Luv u all to pieces, don’t give up 💕💕
Omg I’m the exact way with journals, I’ve tried to do a bullet journal for the last few years and the farthest I’ve gotten is like 3 months. Praying for your journal needs!
I'm reading percy Jackson the lighting thief. About half way through it and started it yesterday and plan to finish it Monday. I also plan on finishing up the amulet series, well at least to the 8th one since there is a new one coming.
I keep a reading journal and it’s basic af artistic-wise but I’ve had so many people interested in looking at it so know that no matter how your journal turns out, people would love to see it. At least I would! (And it already looks beautiful!)
My reading goal for this year is to read all the books on my TBR shelf. It's full, so full it's overflowed to another shelf, so it's time to slog through them all. Then I can buy more! I'll have the space!
I love what you say in the final of videos, it's so warm and hopeful for me. These I have been feeling sad and with anxiety, that sometimes blocked me and is horrible. But your videos help. Thank you
I love my book journal!! I put it in one of my super ratty harry potter journals I got given a few years back and immediately decided not to do any set up so that it would be less stressful thinking about the #aesthetics It worked really well and it's about a third full with my scrawl. I also don't write about every book, sometimes I record TBRs or buying plans but sometimes I don't. Quietly I think of it as my contribution to history - I like the idea that in 400 years someone might find it and use it as a lens to see what kind of stories were told and what people thought about them and all that. IDK why that idea appeals to me so much but it works :D
The same for me this year. Trying to get out of my comfort zone and read all sorts of books. From memoirs I've read Unfiltered by Lily Collins and Becoming by Michelle Obama. SO GOOD
Hey Jesse! I recently read Renegades by Marissa Meyer and holy stars, it was so good!!! I also keep a reading journal where I track my reading & reading goals. I’ve had it since 2015 and have tracked my reading every year since then! I really like it and I hope your journal goes well! I love your videos and hope you have a good week!
I’ve feel like this year in particular, I’m receiving the message of “don’t be hard on yourself. It’s the journey that you need to start, not the end goal.” And it’s hard to just receive that and process it and be confident in it because I feel like I should be good at the things I want to start (eg. drawing and exercise mostly) but I’m not. I just need to tell myself “you’re going to suck at the beginning. You aren’t always going to stick to exercising every day or even reading everyday. What matters is that you did something and you’re starting the habit.” I felt like I should just write this comment not just for me but at least maybe for someone who is like me who feels that they have to be good at something to start it.
ooh yay! I love reading journals! I'm always wanting to see how people set theirs up differently. I set one up last year and it has been really helpful for tracking my purchases, book club reads and readathons. I only just started actually writing gut feeling style reviews but I kinda wanna shake that part up. I actually really love how you did the summary for Eragon, I've been wanting to do some kind of stats thing and am struggling with remembering how i classified some things (esp books that cross boundaries like adult/ya and being more than one genre) when i do month stats so my yearly stats last year didn't make sense. might be good to add some of those details to my books read listing. :D I wish you all the luck with continuing it! I wasn't fantastic at bullet journalling too but found it much easier to keep up with a reading journal so i hope it is the same for you :)
I keep a reading Journal, but i really just use it to keep track of what I've read and a quick summary of the book and it's goodreads rating. I like the idea of keeping a page count though, so I think i'll start that too!
I started a proper reading journal as well this year. I could just leave it be because I am on bookstagram and use goodreads but I use my reading journal to track statistics better than with goodreads. Especially so I can work on diversifying my reading, in age ranges as well as race of the author or characters or sexuality of the characters. It's also a project to see what I find most important in a reading journal so I can create a better one next year if I keep this up lol I also list which publishers the books are from.. that's more for my end of year posts and I also wanna see which publishers I tend to prefer or even if I have a preference in that.
If you like Gilmore Girls, Lauren Graham has a book (I'm not sure if it actually counts as a memoir, but it's a collection of personal essays). I read it a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I haven't read many memoir type books, but I also really loved Trevor Noah's book and Travis Barker from blink-182's book!
I don't keep a reading journal (Even though I kind of want too), but I do have a bullet journal. And it's actually the red notebook like the one you're using for your reading journal.
I haven't physically read this book but I had listened to it in hospital. It was one of the best books I have read in the last year. So I would recommend you to listen to is as well as you get to meet you way more
I'm wanting to read Educated as it was the top memoir last year I just finished Saga vol7. which has been a big step out of my usual reading as I LOVE it so damn much
I loved Furiously Happy :) like you said, there were some parts that were a bit too much. But overall I think it has some very important things presented in an approachable way. I used her spoon analogy to explain what my anxiety felt like to my family, and it really helped them understand it and they still use it today to check up on how I’m doing. Also I loved what you said about being kinder to yourself, that’s one of the main things I’m working on this year :)
I have two recommendations for memoirs. Under the Same Sky by Joseph Kim and In Order To Live by Yeonmi Park. Both are by people who fled North Korea and their journeys getting to South Korea and adjusting after escaping. Trigger warnings for self-harm, depression, starvation, emotional trauma as a whole. It is amazing reading about people who r so unhappy with North Korea and how they flee.
I have a reading journal and sometimes I have to push myselfe, but it is extremely interesting to read what you wrote about a book years ago. Like, I have that journal since 2012 and it can be really funny to see what the 11 years old me tought about a book (my arguments were very... special). I would recommend keeping your journal.
But like reading journals are awesome! I track so much in book/reading world and I want to start a reading journal type thing. I really hope you stick with it because even though it's minimalistic that's cool! Minimalism is awesome! So I'd love to see what you do with it through the year!
Hey Jesse!! Going off of what you were saying about Lawson’s writing style being Lorelai Gilmoreish, I would recommend reading Lauren Graham’s “Talking as Fast as I Can.” It’s a biography/memoir and I think you would really enjoy it judging by how much you liked “Furiously Happy.” I also want to say that I overplan the HECK out of things too and totally relate to what you were saying about accomplishing things, but feeling like you’re not accomplishing anything. Anywho...I love you and your reading vlogs SO MUCH!! You’re my favorite booktuber, so keep doing what you’re doing!! :)
I brought a teeny tiny A5 reading journal two days ago! I knew if I brought a blank notebook the pressure to set it all out/make it pretty would make me give up😅 my reading journal has a layout of one book per page (with lines for publisher/start date end date/rating etc) And then half the page is for thoughts + quotes! Throughout the book there’s mini sections dedicated to quotes/fav authors etc! It’s so cute😭
BROO THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THIS READING JOURNAL IDEA I was never actually able to maintain a bullet journal but I think a reading journal has a better chance Also Jesse, loved the editing and the camera angles and everything 💖
*we readin', we vloggin', we readin', we vloggin'*
:D :D :D
wow i love how you set up your reading journal! the series tracker!!! i have some reading journal-type things in my bullet journal (daily page counts, ratings, monthly purchased books, monthly library books, etc) and a whole notebook where i’m keeping my thoughts while reading each book this year! TOTALLY with you on starting journals and never seeing them through, so we got this! i’m looking forward to your upcoming journal flip through that BETTER come 💗💗💗
P.S. i’m such an overplanner too so dang your pep talk hit home
also please do a seminar on how to edit because HOW
I agree. 😁
I’m a subscriber to both of u
I'm interested in starting one now...but I really hope it'll last for longer than a week
I'm just so distracted by the Furiously Happy cover.
it's definitely an attention grabber
It looks like a happy rocket raccoon
@@neptunes-moons-sao2538 I thought it was a Guardians of the Galaxy book at first.
Same
Planning for failure... That's my sort of planning. I actually planned giving up my reading journal _before_ I started writing it. Very efficient, if I do say so myself.
hahaha
that racoon alone would just convince me to read that book.
haha it's pretty great isn't it?
jessethereader it really is!
Indeed😂
Ikr xD
Keisha it’s a fantastic book
You literally have the most beautiful smile
ty!
Your videos are so aesthetic, Jesse. Brings my anxiety down.
thank you! i'm glad they help you with your anxiety.
I always smile when I see you've uploaded a new video, I love how passionate and enthusiastic you are about reading 😊❤
thanks isabel! i appreciate you being here. :)
Thanks Jemma that's an awesome idea I should definitely do that I always forget myself.!!!
Pretend you're good at it sounds better than fake it till you make it.
It's awesome that you share both you're goals and struggles with us, makes it so much more relatable. Thanks Jesse ❤️
i agree! thanks brother!
That sounds so cool I wanna do that as well since I read a lot of classics
I have a reading journal in my bullet journal and use it for a year now. It's pretty interesting when you see the statistics and how school sucks and keeps you always from reading
dang school always gotta ruin the reading game lol but that's super cool that you track it in your bullet journal
He should go to Tokyo and visit the Books and Beds Library and do a vlog there! Just an idea (please go)
I am really curious about it! I would love yo see that
Love that you're so open about fear of not being good enough. Thanks for your honesty!
If that’s minimalistic, my reading journal is bASiC
I SO feel you when it comes to goals. Learning to lift the pressure off of myself to be perfect and and to do what I think I "SHOULD" do (even in my reading life) and what I really want to do. It makes life so much easier when I'm just being myself and taking things one moment at a time!
I love how you structured your bookish journal! I think I might try that because it seems fun to log in all the books I read in 2019, insert my favorite quotes, etc !

I love how you printed out the covers of the books in your reading journal!! Its so aesthetic 😍
I clicked as fast as I saw the notification! Love your videos, Jesse!
thanks for being here maria!
I would have done the same thing but I was at work!😂😅
Furiously Happy - yep, pretty much my life
I love the moments when you share your reflections on brain, society, loving yourself and those kinds of things. Also your journal is so esthetic!
I definite gonna read Furious happy. Also, I started a bullet journal this year and I am loving it so far .
I started a reading journal just before this last Christmas, and I am really liking it. I had a Miss. Peregrine's journal for the longest time that I didn't know what I wanted to do with until one day the thought popped into my head to start a reading journal.
i love the red theme you have going on in all your recent vids, jesse ... killing the aesthetic game!
I had an empty journal that I didn't know what to do with, and you just inspired my to make a reading journal! I'm currently working on the first page. Thanks, Jessie!
Yes, I have a reading journal. I do not put pictures like you did. I read Furiously Happy and it was really good!
The Lonely City by Olivia Laing is a wonderful memoir
I love the idea of a reading journal! It’s definitely something I’m thinking of doing in the future!!!
This video just inspired me to make a reading journal section apart of my journal where I put my random thoughts, which will really hello since one of my resolutions was to read more and more diverse
Furiously happy is by far my favourite memoir!!! It's just so good!!
I Pray that Jesse reads the hero of Olympian series this summer 🙏
i love that journal sm and idk why but i love his handwriting sm
I would love to see a book journal flip through. 🐭 Love the honesty Jesse.
I’ve been wanting to get a reading journal and I hope to get one soon! I think it will be perfect since I make a of notes on my phone about books so maybe I could find someplace to keep the books I want to read for a whike

"Pretend that I'm a writer in order to become a good writer"
I agree with this moral of the story.
This video has made me very happy. Thanks.
I read Josh Sundquist book too! And I loved it. It reminded me what it was like back in the day in youth group. Lots of memories.

I've been watching your channel for a while and your video editing and overall aesthetic has gotten soooooooo goood.
I love what you say in the final of videos, it's so warm and hopeful for me. These I have been feeling sad and with anxiety, that sometimes blocked me and is horrible. But your videos help. Thank you
i'm glad they help! i hope things start getting better for you. :)
I LOVED your reading journal format - the cut outs!
Hope you in joy eragon jessie I love the series and literally stayed up till 5 in the morning to fish the books
Jesse, I really love your handwriting! And I’m sending prayers you’ll be able to keep up with your reading journal!

All of ur 2019 goals are so inspiring
I’d be up for your style of book journal flip though!
Hey Jesse! I recently read Renegades by Marissa Meyer and holy stars, it was so good!!!

#jessethereader you are AWESOME dude 😎
where are all my readers at????
And yeah screen split was Epic!
If you keep up with it then reward yourself once its all filled up. Im gonna try makin me a reading journal myself.

Furriously Happy is incredible as an audiobook. She narrates that one herself too and it's so powerful to hear her voice
I recommend , Carrie FIsher, The Princess Diarest.
I keep a reading Journal, but i really just use it to keep track of what I've read and a quick summary of the book and it's goodreads rating. I like the idea of keeping a page count though, so I think i'll start that too!
Yes!! I love Loralie! I’m so totally gonna read it now!
I’ve been enjoying Jesse’s videos so much lately!
I read When Breath Becomes Air last year and I liked it way more than I thought I would. I wanna read more memoirs too! 💜
The cover is the best! So positive! I feel happier just by looking at it.
ONE MILLION LOVELY LETTERS! I think you're gonna love this one!
I had this playing in the background while I was cleaning and I heard Jesse say Gilmore Girls and I WAS ALL IN. GILMORE GIRLS IS THE BEST
I don't keep a reading journal (Even though I kind of want too), but I do have a bullet journal. And it's actually the red notebook like the one you're using for your reading journal.
I haven't physically read this book but I had listened to it in hospital. It was one of the best books I have read in the last year. So I would recommend you to listen to is as well as you get to meet you way more
I'm wanting to read Educated as it was the top memoir last year
I just finished Saga vol7. which has been a big step out of my usual reading as I LOVE it so damn much
I really appreciate that your trying to diversify your reading. Thanks for that 😀
of course! i just really want to spice things up. i can't promise that it'll continue to be that way, but i really want to try!
Jesse, you’re not the only one with a reading journal ! I’ve got one too!
Wow, Reading Journal is such a great idea. You've inspired me. Thanks for the idea that I'm definitely gonna steal.
I just started a reading journal too and I'm thrilled you watch the Gilmore girls
Your journal looks great, Jesse! I highly recommend Jenny Lawson's first book.
Thank you for making these videos! I always watch you, Kat, and Christine whenever I’m writing my book! How is your book going??
Yes thanks for the new year ideas!
Just finding your videos and loving them! I also love the minimalism of your journals! Read Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham!
Reading Goal 2k19: actually finishing the books that I start.. I have a bad habit of putting off the last chapters 🤦🏻♀️
But like reading journals are awesome! I track so much in book/reading world and I want to start a reading journal type thing. I really hope you stick with it because even though it's minimalistic that's cool! Minimalism is awesome! So I'd love to see what you do with it through the year!
I haven't read Furiously Happy but definitely will now! You made it sound very interesting!
i liked it quite a bit!
One of my coworkers has this raccoon taped up on her office wall.
haha!
26th like. I’ve never been this early. Yay. I love your new way of editing. I’m excited for what more great content you create.
thank you!
BROO THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THIS READING JOURNAL IDEA
I was never actually able to maintain a bullet journal but I think a reading journal has a better chance
Also Jesse, loved the editing and the camera angles and everything 💖
