I was in your shoes 6 years ago. I had no clue what I wanted to do but I had everyone telling me that I needed to use my math skills. I didn't have any sort of a plan going into my senior year. I ended up following my heart and took an esports scholarship to play league without really caring about my major. I didn't finish the first semester and took the rest of the year off. It was the best decision I could have made because that year was me studying the world rather than studying school. If you're dead set about going straight into college, it's not the end of the world to change your major after a year. I went from math to political science and now I'm at a graduate program working at an economics research center. What matters most is finding something that you can learn about every day for years and never get bored of.

this was a rlly good and comforting video to listen to as a junior in highschool. i’m slowly becoming more worried abt what i wanna do after high school since ive always just felt so uncertain about my future. i know it’ll all work out eventually but it’s just such a huge transition from high school to real life, and actually having to face it soon is a bit scary. thanks for appearing in my recommended, ur super underrated

I’m in the same boat as you my friend. You’ll figure it out, but it will take time. I graduated from highschool in 2023. I’m now a sophomore in college. My freshman year I was studying finance, and now I’m studying mechanical engineering. It’s going to be a struggle, and I know you know that too. Just have some trust in yourself and your capability and use them. As you may see, I also am not so sure about many things. In fact, I may be more confused than you. I digress, the point is keep your head up and continue. I’m not sure if you have any faith in God, but without Christ, I wouldn’t have any sense to continue and go about things the way I do. Anyways, enough of my yapping. God bless and take heart. Let me know what you decide to do.

I am the same as you man: 17 and not sure what to do. But I’ve come to know that you don’t need to know right now or anywhere near in the future. Just keep living and exploring opportunities. Community College is a low-risk option so don’t worry for now. Good luck bro

Yo, a little tip cuz I won’t even lie I’m in your exact same position but a little further, I’m graduating from my community college in 2 months and moving onto a four year, what I will say to you is community will hone your interests since you put an emphasis on what you take and what you’re interested in, it’s nothing like high school at all. something that I did personally, I took an online class (NJIT - Cybersecurity Course) because I was interested in the field and it most certainly helped me understand exactly what I want to do in the future and helped me hone exactly what I want to do. What I will say, in community, find out what you want for your future focus on a field or spread out and do a liberal arts degree or humanities degree and really spread your wings and find out what really attracts you, you are absolutely not alone, a lot of us out here still have no clue what we’re doing and all of us still don’t have it together, but that’s alright as long as you keep moving forward. As someone who is in your position, moving from a community college to a four year and then into a masters, it will be alright fasho, focus on the now and enjoy the now and everything else will come with it

Hey 30 year old advice here. I'd recommend spending as little time enrolled in a university as possible. Experience is way more valuable than education at companies these days, and "affordable" community college will still get you into your field where you can start building experience. I've dabbled a bit in game design myself so I know if it's what you really Want to do, you don't have to go to school for it. But school will still help you achieve your goal and probably lubricate your relationship with your parents. Ultimately it's up to you and the resources you have access to, but I will always recommend avoiding the one-year break and trying a 2-year community college program.
    Best of luck!

I am 27 and I would like to share some perspectives that helped me get through the years you are about to go through.
I came out of Christianity around high school grad to being a complete non-believer by the end of my 2 year community college.
I felt like I lost meaning in life and I didn't know where to go or who to talk to. I had majored in computer science too because I used to mess around with the files and code of games in windows 95 and XP. I went through and did coding and I learned a lot from it but I realized I didn't want to code for a living. It was very difficult and competitive. After community college there was pressure to go get a BA or higher at some other college by my family. (Less so my parents, more so my aunts and uncles). I was just trying to get a job and see what life was like. I started at Taco Bell and worked there for a few years while taking extra math classes on the side at my community college so I wouldn't have to pay so much for them at a more expensive college.
Suddenly COVID 19 hit and everything went online. I also got a part time job as a tutor for my community college. With COVID happening I knew I didn't want to go back to college so I just kind of worked and enjoyed life for a bit. I was working my 2 part time jobs, tutoring and fast food, and tutoring privately on the side. Mid COVID I met the love of my life and after over a year we decided to move in together. This was the first time living on my own. I had been with my parents my whole life in the same house. It was a bit scary and I just jumped into it. For almost 2 years I have been paying rent and all the adult expenses. I have cheaper rent in an old building and I make $2000 a month stretch very far along with my partners income. We try to split everything mostly evenly. COVID and other things screwed up the economy as you may have noticed. Living on your own is extremely difficult as prices increase. With that said I really recommend you go to college. I know its the thing everyone tells you. And you said "Seems like college doesn't do much now days. All information is found for free online". That is true... but going to college is a way of proving yourself. You have to really commit and stick to it. Get good grades. Make good notes. Look for scholarships. Try to get into internships. I will give you my other perspective on this too. During COVID I was still struggling from losing religion and trying to find meaning in my life. I started watching thousands of hours of TH-cam videos on philosophy, meditation, Indian and Chinese philosophy. I found Alan Watts old talks and they helped me so much. They helped me see through the illusion of the ego and how you are not the persona you are taught to be. If you have never heard of these ideas it wont make much sense but I recommend you go listen to a few talks by Alan Watts here on TH-cam. Once I learned that my ego was an illusion, I became attached to nothingness. I had not learned Zen enough to realize I was still giving myself troubles by overthinking. During all this and COVID I was see what smoking weed was really about and it helped me realize the truths that Zen and Alan Watts were teaching. Being high, I saw the center-lessness of myself. Who was watching all this going on? No ONE was. But after learning these new ways of seeing myself I realize that being a no-body isn't the answer either. I wanted to do everything I could to make the people around me truly happy and I have come to the conclusion that, if I want to do that, it would benefit myself and others if I went back and finished my degree and had the money to do what I want to with my family and friends. I have not gone back yet but I have decided 2026 is when I will go back. I have saved enough money and I am tired of working mediocre jobs and feeling like a nobody. I am going back. And I am changing majors to something related to therapy. Meditation and therapy videos have helped me on my journey. I want to help others now and in my future.
So in conclusion, DO NOT BE AFRAID to feel lost. Just let that feeling sit there and watch it. DO NOT BE AFRAID to change majors! And if you feel lost, go listen to Alan Watts. He will show you there is no one that is lost, and no way for you to fix yourself if you are you're own problem. Just let things be. It will make more sense in a few years. GO BE SOMEONE! The world deserves you. Go show love to someone

Hey man, I just wanted to say that you will be able to figure it out. I actually just graduated high school last year and am in college at the moment. I was extremely doubtful of what I wanted to do but if you go to community college immediately and take that free tuition, you’ll be able to figure out if you want to be there. It only took me a few weeks at college to realize that this is the career I wanted to go into.
Along with that, you talked about wanting to program games. That’s awesome! I mean, think of all the independent creators that have made amazing games (the two games that spring to my mind are Stardew Valley and Undertale, both very well done). You can always work on learning how to program while in school even and create while you are in college.
I say make those games that you’ve always wanted to play, who knows what will happen? As someone around your age I do understand what it is like to doubt going to college, it’s way too expensive nowadays. However, everything will eventually work out. You will find out if you enjoy college or not and be able to make your decision from there. You will be okay!

The future is unpredictable, you can’t control it or predict it. But that doesn’t mean that you will never find your place, something that you’re comfortable with. It won’t always be perfect, there will be times that you won’t feel satisfied or happy, but you will eventually find something that fits you. Just remember, you can’t truly plan your future by the past, but you can influence its outcome. So whatever happens, whether you’re happy with the outcome or not, just remember there is always another path that is open for you.
    Hope this helps.

I currently have a bachelor's degree in CS and I'm doing masters in computer science so I think I'm obligated to say something. For the last two years I've been working for a big firm as a software engineer. When I was young I was playing games quite a lot and thus I wanted to go to a high school that was IT related and this really killed my whole liking for computers and games in general. After high school I went to a university in computer science thinking this field will be later well paid. After first year I really went into programming (which I hated in my high school) and I can say that this was so far my best decision in my whole life. In my third year I applied for a job posted on an online job board and I got accepted. It's worth to say that I tried a lot (and get me, a lot) of different jobs and since I'm working there I can say for sure that it's the best so far by quite a lot. Working as a software engineer requires me to solve a lot of problems which is really entertaining and working with people that have the same interests as me is a true blast. Remember that it's only your decision to choose the subject that's interesting to you. Only different part is that i live in Poland so that i don't pay for the univerisity at all, so i could choose almost every subject. But for sure CS was the best one - we had a lot of different lectures about different things and this got me into programming. Before uni I thought I wanted to be an IT technician in a buissnes or something, but during the lectures I got so much into programming that it shiftet me that way.

I'm 25 years old, and I'm still finding my path. I did work a few jobs over the few years, but nothing stuck for me. I've graduated college after 3 years - it doesn't teach you the real-world skills at all, and I discovered I actually HATED the industry for what it really is. The job market is also very competitive, saturated and toxic. AI is also threatening our jobs.
I would encourage you to teach yourself skills for free at your own pace, then start freelancing, or make your own website to advertise your services and/or products like I am trying to. Make your own space online, and sell your skills. If you get any creative ideas on how to make money on your own, immediately write it down. You need to be as self-sufficient as possible. Of course, when it comes to the legalities of your business, then only can you start paying for help. Cut down costs as much as possible. If you need a software program, you should first get used to the free and open source alternatives, or else you'll be stuck in a financial catch-22 situation, where you need to teach yourself skills to eventually make money, but you're sucking your savings dry just to pay for the program subscription, for example.

Older millennial here. Very rarely people get the job they love and what they trained for in the first place. While that's unfortunate, it's not the end of the world. My advice is, for whatever job you do get, save and invest your money as much as possible. College is just a money pit unless you research the job market of the degree you're going for and where it's going. Study how small businesses work and how to start one, because those skills are transferable anywhere.
But most importantly, never let go of hope, never let go of the glint in your eye. Many people have given up, you will meet them and you'll know them by how they talk and act. For them, they just go through the motions. Don't let that happen.
