  • vlog # 32 - My first time skiing in Utah! We flew in from San Diego to Salt Lake City. This trip, we got to do Solitude and Snowbird because the SR-190 and SR-210 roads were closed intermittently during our trip and we had to shift our original plans!
This trip, I faced my fears of STEEP. Utah is incredibly challenging in a good way for a beginner intermediate skier like me. It really brought me out of my comfort zone and showed me my areas for improvement. I am literally so excited for next year and we already renewed our IKON pass for the 2023-2024 ski season!
I have a former coworker who recently moved to Salt Lake City and I would see his epic videos on Instagram stories of the incredible snow. Supposedly the snow in Utah is the best snow on earth. I had to experience it for myself.
Knox and I were celebrating our joint birthdays and realized we needed one more ski trip before the season ends. We booked this trip pretty last minute and got some insanely helpful tips from my friend who lives in Salt Lake City.
He recommended staying in town and shuttling over to whichever resort was open at the time. Utah had been dumped on with so much snow to the point that there were so many natural avalanches in the area that would end up closing the roads and the resorts. The roads that get to Solitude and Brighton (SR 190) and Snowbird and Alta (SR 210) are some of the most avalanche prone mountain roads there are. After doing a TON of research on accommodations, I picked the Hyatt House Hotel in Sandy, Utah. I really had my eye on The Cliff Lodge in Snowbird due to the ski-in ski-out feature and amenities of the property, but I am so glad we didn't end up staying there because the hotel guests got interlodged (meaning they couldn't leave the building where they were staying). It was insane.
I was expecting fluffy and soft powder and the snow was actually quite crunchy because of two warm days after a snowstorm that melted the top layer. I can only imagine how much more fun these resorts are when it's fresh powder and you get first tracks. But only enough powder to where the ski resorts are actually open.
It was also really interesting trying to pick a ski resort in Utah because there are literally 10 or more. Just kidding I don't know the actual number but I did a deep dive based on what I was looking for. I wanted somewhere that would really challenge me and make me better. So I ended up deciding on Solitude and Snowbird!
Hope this video helps you beginner skiers out there!
I got much better on this trip and actually got emotional at my last day at Snowbird because I've come so far! See below for my progress.
