When I was stationed in Okinawa in the late 60's, I would often get depressed by the constant racism. A friend of mine from Detroit, who loved jazz, introduced me to Eddie Harris & the song Listen Here. After that, whenever I started feeling depressed, I would play this song. I COULD NOT be depressed listening to this song. It became my favorite song of all time. I also fell in love with A Theme in Search of a Movie. RIP great one, you got me through it.

My dad played this song for me when I was 12 in 1982 as inspiration to pick up the sax. I tried to play along with it 100’s of times with my student model alto sax. This song was the catalyst for many years of enjoyment in my life.
Then in 1995 I was walking in a random town and saw his name on a club playbill for that night. I was too busy / shy / embarrassed to try to meet him. The next year he was gone from this world. Learn from my mistake!
    R.I.P. the great Eddie Harris!

Had this album when it first came out. I was back from Vietnam the summer of 68 and played it over and over. Such a great record with lots of groove. Then saw him on west coast the following year with my cousin.
Great artist. At the age of 7 1/2 decades You Tube lets me listen to all the albums I had during that great period of jazz---1962 to 1980.

Met him in the L.A. train station in 1987. I was 23 and in the Marines. He asked me if I was heading to San Diego and could I watch his bag for a few minutes. The train got called he got his bag. We got on the same train and I attempted to get off at the stop for Camp Pendleton but did not get off in time and got off at the next stop with him. I did not know who he was and we started to talk while I waited for the next train north and him for his ride. I found out that he was Eddie Harris and told him that I had his album with me. He was surprised that I had the record among my 2 Live Crew and Eric B. and Rakim etc records. He signed the album and invited me to come and see him play. I could not as I had to be in Hawaii the next day. Wish I had went. R.I.P. Eddie keep playing.

As my three children were growing up in the 80s & 90s (two boys, one girl, all five years apart), 60s jazz is all I played in the house. Eddie, Les, J Coletrain, Ray Brown, Roy Haynes, Brubech, Ramsey, Red Garland, Gene Ammons, Crarmen McRae, etc etc... Growing up they always strayed away, but always came back to jazz. Now they are fine adults and from time to time they call me in tears saying how they heard a jazz tune and they think of all the time times they had growing up at home with all that beautiful jazz music. They often tell me they've become jazz snobs.. I also love Jimmy Hendrix, & Bach, but my heart is with jazz.

Funk with a purpose, jam with a groove. Cuts like this paved the way for the dynamic crossover into the realm of smooth jazz. Les McCann's collaboration with Eddie Harris will go down as one of the most trendsetting meeting of musical minds ever recorded. The rest, shall we say is history. Actually, I had forgotten just how magnificent this piece was given it is from 1967. Just goes to show you the timeless nature of good music.👑🎸🎵

Used to hang out at Shelley's ManneHole in Hollywood in the 60's. heard many of the jazz greats when they would come into town, usually for a gig at Shelley's or to see who else was in town and very often , sit in and jam. It was a great time for jazz. The Crescendo in Hollywood was a great jazz spot also and there, you could catch Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce, too!!

Robert Jackson/Mizpahboy, seems like a pattern since I graduated from Baumholder HS 1964, and ended back in Germany in the military station at "Paton Barracks" Heidelberg Germany 1967/69 ! Spent a lot of time with cats from NY and playing/ listening to jazz and taping it, and Eddie Harris was a favorite, esp "compare to what".
