  • Solutions containing zinc ions are typically colourless in colour.
    To test for the presence of zinc ions in solution, you may use either the sodium hydroxide test or the ammonia test.
    1) Sodium Hydroxide Test - To a sample of your solution, add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution. A white precipitate forms. Upon addition of excess sodium hydroxide, the white precipitate dissolves.
    2) Ammonia Test - To a sample of your solution, add a few drops of ammonia solution. A white precipitate forms. Upon addition of excess ammonia solution, the white precipitate dissolves.

    Here's the equation:
    Aqueous Sodium Hydroxide Test (NaOH):
    ZnCl2 + 2NaOH -> Zn(OH)2 + 2NaCl (where Zn(OH)2 is the white ppt in few NaOH and dissolves in excess NaOH)
    Aqueous Ammonia (in water) Test (NH3*H2O or NH3 + H20):
    ZnCl2 + 2(NH3*H20) -> Zn(OH)2 + 2NH4Cl (where Zn(OH)2 is the white ppt in few NH3*H20 and dissolves in excess NH3*H20)
    Hope this helps you. Sorry for the inconvenience about the subscripts but I hope it's still readable.
