In her cringy reality show that was filming during this debacle (it’s on TH-cam) they show her going to the doctor twice beforehand and trying her hardest to overcome it during sound check. The doc ordered her not to talk to try and rest it and then her mom and dad pressured her to go on anyway. She was a kid.

As a drummer, she almost had me feeling sorry for her and understanding why she would choose to lip sync. Because, her being the singer, if her voice was really not able to perform as they were about to give a live performance, I could see playing the recording of the song and lip syncing as an absolute desperate last-resort. But then at the very end she throws her band under the bus, saying "my band played the wrong song". That sounds like a bunch of B.S to me! She should have just stopped when she said that she felt bad about it.

Totally agree. So unprofessional to trash your band like that. Also, if your band starts playing a different song of yours than you expected, either tell them to stop and start playing the "right" song, or just sing the damn song they're already playing. It's not like they just busted out a Zeppelin song out of nowhere.

It’s because they’re usually able to play it off enough to at least give the image that it’s legit. They lipsynched just as much back then too; Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Nsync, Backstreet Boys, etc. Everyone knew they did it, but as long as the performance was okay people just pretended it was legit. It’s when things like this happen does it break the immersion and people see it’s a farce is when it hurts the performer’s image. And you have to remember, Ashlee Simpson was JUST starting her career, so this especially made people weary about her and is why her career died.

Lip syncing wasn't even remotely new in 2004. Look up the chordettes Mr sandman on dick Clark in 1958. They were lipsyncing then. Look up any American bandstand act, lipsyncing. Its always been the case

  • @jessyfretz5800

It comes down to experience. When The Beatles did Ed Sullivan, they had spent eight hours a day playing clubs every night. They knew how to be in front of a camera and be in the present. Ashlee was very anxious and blamed the band because she was put in the spotlight too soon and was too green. But another big hit can earn forgiveness quickly, but Ashlee was a one hit wonder.
And it was also her complete lack of professionalism.

      Bassist played correct song (Autobiography).
Drummer played the wrong song (Pieces of Me).
Drummer is responsible for turning on the lip-syncing vocals. He turned on the wrong one. (Pieces of Me).
      Ashlee and Bassist are confused.
Guitarist joins in with the wrong song. (Pieces of Me).
Bassist says Fuck It and switches to the wrong song (Pieces of Me).
      Ashlee is more confused.
Ashlee gets out of the way.
      Band rocks on.
Later, Ashlee uses her 5 second goodbye to say "My band started playing the wrong song" in order to sum up "Earlier this week I was at the doctors about my voice, who recommended i dont sing live. But I'm 2p and naïve so when my parents pushed me to do the live SNL performance, I went for it. During the dress rehearsal my voice started giving out, so we switched to lip-syncing. But we also changed the order of our two songs for the night. So when the drummer accidentally started to repeat the first song that we already performed, and then the rest of the band joined in, I had no idea how to respond. I'm sorry!"

Yeah it was her drummer's fault tbh and he admitted too. Watch the video closely and you'll see they were supposed to perform the song Autobiography, bassist started off playing intro to Autobiography hoping to correct the drummer who queued the wrong song, but dummer and guitarists continued playing Pieces of Me, the song they already performed earlier that night in the show.
Drummer said he got it mixed up because they were supposed to play Autobiography first and then Pieces of Me, but then they switched it up for the actual show, where they played Pieces of Me first and then Autobiography. So what happened here is, when it came time to play Autobiography, drummer got mixed up and queued Pieces of Me instead.

I wouldn’t say it was “career ending” considering she had a #19, #22, and #21 hit, after this happened, in her second album era. Which is pretty good for the time period when it was far harder for one to get a hit song, and for someone who’s name became a parody, but I think those songs most likely would’ve done better had the SNL moment not happened. She still survived past it though.

Based on the band looking like they were holding in laughter, and none of them stopping in order to restart with the correct song, it very well could have been sabotage.
But at the very least, it is also a believable mistake. They switched the order of the songs earlier. The drummer is the one who turns on the lip-syncing vocals, and he accidentally started playing Pieces of Me. (Both on the drums, and with the vocals that he turned on).
Meanwhile the Bassist was playing the correct song (Autobiography) and was just as confused as Ashlee.

I’m confused. So technically, the band did play the wrong song. They replayed “Pieces of Me”, which was the first song she sang on SNL that night. If they were supposed to play “Autobiography”, then she was correct, (at the end) saying that the band played the wrong song. (disregarding the fact that she was lip-synching)
    -
if so, then why is everyone saying she threw her band under the bus?
    -
Also, is it really the drummer that picks the backing track to be played? (live during the show) I would’ve thought, that is handled by an audio tech behind the control boards. (or whatever, the SNL sound engineer)
    -
And I find it incredibly hard to believe, that Lauren claims he has no idea she was going to lip-synch 2:18)
    -
whoever was responsible for playing the wrong backing track. The band should’ve known. They already played that song 30 minutes earlier than night. (so why did they play it again?)
    -
If anything, they could’ve pulled an Elvis Costello, and stop the song, and played the correct song.
    -
& BTW: I’m only watching this video tonight in 2024, because “Celebrity name that tune” TV show (tonight) one of the songs they played in first segment, was “Pieces of me”

She just misjudged the # of bars b4 her vocal started and probably was in a kind of daydream state where too many thoughts were in her head and she was not in full concentration mode and she zoned out. Just for a second but that's all it took then instead of jumping in and stopping everyone and saying hey, guys, I have a bad throat and I didn't want to cancel... crank that song up again and let me at least lip sync if for you guys bam, she starts over, yes it isn't live BUT she at least has an excuse. No. The mix-up happened because the bass player began the correct song, but the drummer accidentally triggered the vocal track for Pieces of Me, a song they had performed just 30 minutes earlier in the show. Once the wrong track started playing, the band decided to go along with it to avoid a jarring sound. However, Ashlee was caught off guard, unsure how to proceed since they’d already performed that song and had no reason to repeat it.

It was not really her band's fault... Not that they were really a band. This was actually an amazingly complex event from a psychological standpoint. I am not even sure what the correct response was. A real band would just go oops, wrong song and do the right one, but they would not be playing a vocal track. The jig was up, so Ash did a jig. Kinda fitting. They should have found an alternate. I bet her management did everything they could to force her up there.

Dumb... stupid... make bad decisions... can't take responsibility. The world treated her very harshly for something silly. When you were 20 years old did you take responsibility for stuff?

The reality is that EVERYTIME it came time for Ashlee to sing live .... there was some kind of illness or tragedy. If you watch her reality show the only time she is "sick" is right before concerts or recording sessions. Even on her show when they were recording her concert she is obviously singing to a track. The truth is that she wasn't a very good singer and her staff spent more time trying to cover her than she spent actually singing. Ashlee was handed a recording contract because of her sister. She cared more about her hair and clothes than the music and process of recording an album. I will admit it was entertaining watching her reality show back in the day because I could see how they edited the show around the fact that Ashlee couldn't really sing.

@@damianosavraammisaelidis9727 She did an entire reality show recording the record. They had to modify some things; she claims she only did the "Oooohhhhh..." on the chorus of this song once and wasn't able to redo it live, etc. But it's her voice. It's not even a good voice; she just speak-sings everything. The only reason she lip-synced is 'cause she's not a real trained artist who had confidence in herself when she had a hardship; instead of plowing through, she asked for an easy solution. The product of only being in the industry because of your sister and MTV wanting to do a docuseries on you.

They probably had NO idea what to do…there’s no rehearsal for that situation. They DID start playing the wrong song…on the backing track. The band probably still had the vocals going in their monitors and since it was live there was no turning back, in a millisecond her cover was blown. I can’t imagine what that feels like, but we all know what everyone else thought.
