  • continuing the series on diamond sharpening stones, this one is the sharpal 325/1200 combo stone. this one came highly recommended by outdoors55 {dude has some awesome sharpening pictures on his channel} and he was not wrong. this 325 grit stone is what the dmt's 325's used to be out of the box. i took it out of the box, ran a razor blade over it a bit, and then sharpened a knife to a very reasonable edge for a first sharpening on that stone. id bet this stone mellows out in a couple sharpenings and settles down to be a great stone. current price on this on amazon is about $70. caltoncutlery.com

    a little FYI, the non slip side goes on the bench, the top is made to hold the plate firmly.

      thanks! to tell the truth, I usually just throw away any sort of cheesy holder that comes with stones and use a wet paper towel on a chunk of old 2x4 instead. but this case seems too nice to throw away :}

      @@joecalton1449 that non slip rubber on the bottom is some sort of magic, i don't understand how but it's better than my expensive stone holder.

    Yeah man. Those stones are great man. The channel you saw the stone on outdoors55..he does close ups of the sharpal...there's practically no grit contamination on that stone. All even partical size. Well worth it. Thanks for the vid.

    Yeah, I bought this one on Alex's recommendation as well. Couple of tiny chips on the edge where diamonds were missing, but the actual grit is hugely consistent. Very happy with mine. Been dying for your review.

    I've been using the 3x8 Ultra Sharp 3 stone set (300,600,1200) for years now. The 1200 is just now starting to go much finer; like the 3000 I bought from them. Wish i hadn't now since I need another 1200. Best Sharpening Stones sells them about $10 cheaper than Amazon. I may just replace the 1200 with this Sharpal. Love the face shave. I'm not brave enough, besides, I'd mess up the beard.

      good to hear that you are liking the ultra sharp set! the beard shave is handy for me as its hair im just going to shave away every couple of days anyways :} you can also test it on your beard and if it catches the hair, its pretty sharp also.

  • @alpharibo
    @alpharibo หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Hey Joe, love this stone as well, the extra fine is amazing too. Also the nonslip side of the container case is supposed to go on a flat surface and the other is supposed to be where the stone is held so its elevated. Really liking this video series

    • @twatmunro
      @twatmunro หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I also like the extra fine side. I use mine predominantly on kitchen knives and often they'll need a quick touch up but won't need a reprofiling. A few strokes on each side on the extra-fine followed by a quick strop gets me right back to hair whittling sharp.

    • @joecalton1449

      ill have to look at the container again. to tell the truth I usually just throw away whatever sort of holder that comes with stones and use a paper towel and a chunk of old 2x4. but that case is awefully nice :}

  • @Wolf_K
    @Wolf_K 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I’ve been considering one of these as the price is good, it has two useful grits, and it’s a large stone.
    I would prefer it to be # 300/# 600 though as I rarely go over # 600 for an apex and when I do I go _way_ over it, into the high thousands.
    All reports seem to be very positive anyways.

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      the one I have seems pretty nice. and the other reviews that I have seen have been pretty positive, so that suggests that they have good quality control. I also usually go for the 325, or the king 6000 water stone edge, and not usually much between. but now that i have that 1200, i will probably play with it a bit :}

    I use their 325 grit credit card sharpener as my daily "field" sharpener, and it works great! I've been eyeballing this benchstone for a while. I'd love to know what your thoughts are on the 1200 grit side. Like you, I generally prefer a coarse, toothy edge, but on occasion, the task demands a more polished edge.

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      good to hear that you are liking the credit card one! ill have to play with that 1200 grit side for a bit to form an opinion on it.

    Quality diamond plates are electroplated not adhesive sprayed on it to bond the diamonds. The diamonds are bound in the nickel layer during electroplating. Very poor quality diamond plates will have the diamonds out on the stone with adhesive and if that's the case that stone won't last at all.

    • @krtkv
      @krtkv หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      im pretty sure 8000 DMTs are made using the adhesive because the diamonds are too small to stick out of the nickel plating layer

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      that electroplating sounds like it would be better!

    Why not using the 1200 grit side for micro bevelling.
    I’m a convex type full, scandivex, or the bevel. And I’ve learned through years of everyday sharpening jumping from 600 to 10’000 on Japanese Naniwa whetstones following by a few passes on plain leather gives me scariest aggressive edges. Whether for shaving hairs or cutting meet, tomato, chicken, veggies and wood.

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      i typically like more agressive edges, simple flat grinds/edges and fewer stones for edcs and working knives. the finer grit edges will do things like cut hanging paper, shave better, whittle hair and such, but for me the tend to glass out faster and struggle with rougher cuts where a more agressive egde will just keep right on tearing through. plus i like how simple and easy it is to grab one stone, spend 1-2 minutes and be back to work with a fresh edge. now all that being said, now that I have that 1200 diamond stone, i will probably play with it a bit :}

    hey Joe! thanks for the reviewing and comparing different stones. i wonder if you are concerned with the flatness of the stones. the two sharpal 8x3 that i got were heavily dished on the fine side, and the steel plates were bowed so tbey didnt wirk for flattening the backs if woodworking tools or flattening the waterstones. do you think it is irrelevant for knife sharpening? if there is a valley in the center and the edges are sticking out the edge is only touching the very middle and the edge of the stone right?

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449  หลายเดือนก่อน

      i did not think to check this one or the other for flatness. I will take a look at them next time i work on them, thanks! for flattening waterstones i would much rather use an inexpensive diamond stone like the harbor freight hone block for around $10 as the flatness of the diamond stone is secondary to the method, if you are rotating your stones while surfacing them, then i think it evens everything out for the most part. i really dont know all that much about chisels so cant really comment on that. for knife sharpening, i think if its really flat then that is a good thing, but i have, and have seen lots of guys put some really nice edges on knives with stones that were badly dished and in serious need of flattening.

    • @krtkv
      @krtkv หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ thanks! im my experience, if the corner is sticking out, it can scratch the wyer stone badly, and if the diamlnd plate is dished it only flattens the water stone roughly, maybe its fine for bigger knives but there will be bumps on the surface of the water stone if whatever you are flattening it with has bumps and valleys. also if the stone is bowed like my sharpals were, they will remove more material on either end of the stone so there will be a convex to the stone

    • @krtkv
      @krtkv หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ another thing i was wonderin was why you did not include ultra sharp plates in your list. they seem to have been pretty popular around yourube a while ago. i liked them better than DMTs. and for the 6x2 small plates there are am tech brand and ab tools or BE tools whatever, they look just like eze-lap when you remove them from the plastic and they are ca 10-15 euro a piece or 30 for a set of 3
      regards
