while im not a sim racer, hell the closest to a sim i ever got are the f1 games, i think your channel is exceptional because of many things, but what stands out the most for me is your pure passion about racing and sims. Its a joy to watch someone like you.

You have the best Vintage Racing channel in TH-cam! I've always enjoyed vintage cars in real life more than modern cars but you have shown me how much fun it is going back in time in Simracing and after falling out of love with the hobby and being obsessed with becoming an alien I found enjoyment and fun in vintage, gritty racing, so thank you for that!

Even though it hasn’t even been a full year for me yet, thank you for giving me those great memories. Here’s to making more

This is such a great community.
We got Jimmy, our TH-cam breakout superstar.
We got Mike from SR604 and Random Callsign, the guys you just want to kick back and chill with while tearing up the LAC.
We got Chris Haye with his sumptuous stylised sim racing porn videos.
We got Race Beyond Matter, whose soothing positive demeanor makes his channel a therapy session in itself.
We got SingleRacer with his charming Aussie boomer-tier take on things.
We got DaveCam, seasoned Pro racer who we all wish was our Dad.
(Phew, quite a list and I missed a whole bunch of my regular subs out even after that)
And right here GPLaps has carved himself a niche as the sim racing historian, with his ability to bring these classic events and cars popping into life. Wonderful.
It's a good time to be alive.

If you want an "experiment" idea, I was always intrigued when I found out Indianapolis tried to make 358ci engines eligible in the mid-80's, on the theory that some of the local NASCAR tuning expertise might trickle across and give the foreign Cosworths a run for their money. It didn't work of course, partly because NASCAR would never let their teams go to Indianapolis like that, and partly because any engine with enough cubes to challenge the DFX for power was now physically too big to fit in an IndyCar chassis.
But it made me wonder... what if someone actually did it? What if you put an 80's-era NASCAR engine in a CART chassis from around the same time? What would you have to chop and change to make it work? And even better, what if NASCAR had a second go at the Speedway Division in the 1980s, and made an open-wheel series of their own using their trademark "stock" V8s? A bit of alternate history, maybe, and also a mod I'd love to see. Somewhere between Formula 5000 and CART, I think that'd be pretty sweet.

    The 1997 & 98 F1 games on N64 had a feature that I loved that I’ve not seen in any game since…
Certain real life scenarios from the season which you had to recreate, i.e. driving the last laps of Damon Hill’s failing car Hungaroring and trying to stay in podium positions, or Fisichella (I think?) driving back to the pits on 3 wheels at Hockenheim after losing a rear wheel…
They were bite size chunks of sheer fun!

    • @GPLaps
      @GPLaps  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! i loved that game. I was actually thinking recently about that and its challenge mode. Might be fun for a stream or something casual

@@GPLaps as a kid I had a shitty wheel for my N64. I wish I knew what happened to it, I can’t find it at my parent’s house anywhere. It made the game seem amazing at the time when I was a kid. I’m sure now, compared to RF2 AC ACC AMS2, it would seem rubbish! 😂
I only recently found the 98 game in a second hand shop for £6 - I’ve kept the price on it! Had a wonderfully nostalgic couple of hours playing my N64.
Would love to see you do this video 👍🏻
Edit; correction - the tag says £4!!!! 😂

I really like on your channel that you don't push yourself to release videos in a fixed schedule or something like this. On the one side this brings up a positive suprise every time I open yt and see another video from you and on the other side imo this leads to a level of quality and passion in your videos you don't see this often on yt. So screw the yt numbers, continue what you are doing and I am hyped for the Targa Florio video cooming up.

Right away what strikes me is that the sound of the car you are driving is a 6-cylinder sound. The 904's I watched race at Road America in the 1960's were 4 cylinder cars, as I remember. So I'm looking into that now and learning some things about the car that I never knew. What I remember about 904's racing in the US is that they were raced in the SCCA with production class cars - I think they were in A Production. What was remarkable was that the rest of the A Production cars were thundering V-8 cars, but the 904 just went so well that it could run up near the front of the pack, and finish the race! 22:42 Yup!

This is THE history channel! I love history and finding why things are the way they are from all over.
The fact that I have been sim racing for 30 odd years is a bonus (since indy500 on the XT. gosh) I don't care what content you put up, I know it will be entertaining and educational, even when you are having fun.
Most of your content has prodded me to either try/retry the track, car or the sim to get a better engagement into the universe you covered. For each hour of content you provide I guess I spend another 5 or more hours just exploring that directly plus many more doing divergent scenarios.
I am so glad that the history drives you and not YT people and numbers.
I would think if it were just you and one viewer, you would still put in the effort. Well done and much appreciated.

Your videos always make me want to grab my H-pattern, bold it onto my desk and just fling some classic cars around virtual circuits. Way back from when you did the GPL seasons up to your new "modern" style that is also nicely laid back and easy-going. It's organic and that's what makes your content so authentic. So don't stress out on anything. ;-)

Interesting what you say about the "being there" aspect of older sims v newer ones; one of the most exciting things AMS2 is doing for me is introducing AI modding (names/abilities) because it adds so much immersion to me to know *who* I'm racing against, even if they are a collection of ones and zeros.
And AC is my other game of choice because you can do all that in Content Manager, giving each livery the 'right' name, ability and aggression level (and Cam's ability to randomise them within a range). Currently running '64 GT season with Bazza and Co's GTC mod.
I've realised that what immerses one person is different to another - details like these immerse me greatly in the 'being there' aspect whereas it obviously does nothing for a lot of others. So very reassuring to know it's not just me that stuff matters to!

Jake ... thank you very much for doing this channel. You hit my nerve perfectly. I discovered your channel a few years ago when you uploaded the GPL 1965 season. I thought it was a great shame that no more videos came after that. Almost exactly a year ago I randomly discovered your 1955 F1 season.
Thanks to your channel, I suddenly felt like doing a lap in Spa Francorchamps in an old racing car.
I remembered getting a Microsoft steering wheel as a little boy (that I hardly ever used because it was just too difficult for me to drive with back then and a few years later it was no longer supported by Win XP, so it no longer worked). After a couple of tries somehow I got the steering wheel working. I became addicted almost immediately. DAMN YOU ! 😀... greetings from Germany .. Weiter so!

Thoroughly enjoy your channel and it's always an 'ooh' moment when a new one drops. They don't all interest me, but my absolute favourites are probably the 'simplest' ones; Assetto Corsa and AMS2 vintage car and track combos, especially the highlights of mods for AC. This Porsche at Nurburgring is a lovely example, I'm happy to watch and listen to this for ages!
That said, the documentary you did on Targa Florio was probably the first sim racing video that's ever brought a tear to my eye.
With AC in particular, I really feel it's an absolute golden age of sim racing. The immersion from all the mixed grids of 50s and 60s cars is something I thought would only exist in my simming dreams.
Keep it up as long as you enjoy it!

Thanks for letting us along on the ride, it's been an absolute joy. I was so pleased when you started up Richie Axelson again, having watched the '65 season - and the additional stuff you've been creating has been brilliant, truly - always super happy to see a GPLaps video notification, so I know I've got that to look forward to when I get home from work. As for the 0.01% - you come across as one of the soundest, most grounded people I've known, and you clearly love what you're doing - so don't let them stand out - they've got some serious issues mate. • @Villoresi
    @Villoresi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, before the "upgrade" done at the Nurburgring for 1973, the track definitely did more weaving around in some places, and also had more of those severe dips and rises.
Wish we had a good version of the Ring without the Hohenrain Chicane, which didn't exist before '67. That's one of the odd things, that for such a well-known track, I haven't seen it.
Obviously, the histories and essays are a highlight for me, aside from the racing itself.
And I love when new classic/vintage content gets reviewed: cars, tracks, etc.
I think the experiments are fine, as long as you're not just doing a ton of them. You know, be somewhat selective. Maybe you could try a comparison of mostly undertray downforce vs. mostly wing-produced downforce, probably on an open-wheel. Or perhaps looking at an old set of rules or combination of classes and just having some fun toying around with that, and possibly if it could be sort of recreated.
Another thought, somewhat in line with your "what if NASCAR was still stock cars" video might be to look at kind of doing that, but with more modern GT cars. And now I'm thinking of one of my favorite periods of GT racing, just for the absurdity of the cars: Group 5. You know, a BMW 2002 or '70s Toyota Celica or Ford Capri simply wasn't meant to go that fast. (I'm almost cracking up here.)
I guess one other thing, whether an experiment, essay, or review, would be to look at a few of those just wild machines that actually got built. Of course, I know you've done some stuff with the 1930s GP cars. Getting more recent though, you had the Chaparral 2J and Brabham BT46B "fan cars". You had the turbo monsters of Can-Am and USAC IndyCar in 1973. There was the Tyrrell P34 six-wheeler. The Lotus 79 came along, and then the Chaparral 2K. Finally, the car that didn't even get to race, the Lotus 88 double-chassis car.
And yes, having Richie Axelson is a nice through-line to it all.
Leaving aside what you can race in current sims, the Abarth 205 Vignale Berlinetta and 2000 Sport Spider are a couple of sweet little classics from them.
I mean, there is an 8-km version of Charade for AC, but it's kind of based on more modern scans or whatever, so the current circuit part of it has run-offs and what-have-you. I know doing a "proper" version has been on Fat-Alfie's list for a long time, but that's just the thing; it's been hanging out there for a long time.
And I'm thinking Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2, but whatever. Small, light, not real powerful, and that wailing V8 is just ear candy.
Not sure about NASCAR. They've returned to Road America and are going to Gateway. I don't really have the memories of Wilkesboro, and short tracks have never exactly been my first thing. I'd kind of be interested in something modern having a go at the Rafaela oval.
If you're talking France and F1, Dijon seems like the most ideal, if they weren't going to butcher it. Le Mans Bugatti has too high a proportion of slower corners, and both of the main "straights" are interrupted by chicanes. To say nothing of being in the shadow of the 24 Hours on the big circuit. Modern Charade is probably even tighter and slower than Bugatti. Unless T1 is flat-out, Manson isn't an overtaking zone. In that case, the only real overtaking spot as the course exists would be Petit Pont. I'd say those 3, effectively, chicanes between Manson and Champeaux screw up overtaking in that section.
I'd like them to figure out the Turn 2 wall at Pocono, but yes, for IndyCar, yes. And please, if there is any way for Fontana to just be left alone, I'm all for that.
I suppose the name that usually floats to the top for me is Fangio.
That would be the 1937 Delahaye 145 V12 Grand Prix (built to 1938-39 rules). Ya gotta love a car that pissed Hitler off so much that he personally ordered its destruction.
One area I definitely like and that has very few representatives is the old streamliners and pseudo-streamliners of the 1930s, '50s, and even '60s (at Indy at least). Right now, we just have the Auto Union Type C and Mercedes-Benz W196 (seen the real one at the Indy museum). I know Casual Sim Racer is working on some variant of the W25/125 Mercedes, but there are a fair number of others. Ferrari-Lancia, Maserati, and Vanwall all tried their hand at it in F1 in the '50s, and the base Bugatti Type 251 was a pseudo-streamliner right out of the box.
If I'm picking one thing from that '30s era though, I want something to at least try to give a challenge to the Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union monsters. So, and I'm sure I've mentioned these elsewhere before, but a true Alfa Romeo 12C 37 comes to mind, or the Bugatti Type 59/50(B).
I guess an old mod exists, and has been converted to other sims, but it's maybe not exactly up to snuff anymore. So, although it's not to the 750-kg rules, the Maserati 8CTF was their best challenger of the period. (I think I've seen the Maser and possibly an Alfa Rpmeo 308 at at the Indy museum as well.)
Thanks for the ride, and I find these streams of consciousness I can put into the comments fairly relaxing when I get to the end.

Late to notice this video, but your work has gone from great to somehow even better in the past few months. Thanks for the introductions to so many legendary cars and types of racing.
You inspired a lot of my own choices for what kinds of series to simulate (mostly in my own head) in my first year of having a wheel again, and I even ended up driving a bunch of tracks in Oceania because of Richie's Tasman Series adventures. Never thought I'd love '60s sports car racing so much, either.

Hey, thanks for this. Your output is greatly appreciated, there were loads of highlights during the past year - my particular favourite was the GP Legends As Good As It Gets video, especially as it was in Cinerama letterbox format which gave it that cinematic feel.
I'm very much looking forward to more retrospectives and the ongoing careers of Richie and Ryan Axelson.
It's just as well that this video was a casual cruise around the Nordschleife, otherwise your lap times would have been invalidated for not saying hello to Rebel Tree.

Great video GPlaps. Kudos for what you've done for the race SIM community. Your content as certainly inspired me to do my own SIM gaming. It's that influence of passion that I'm sure as prompted others to do the same. You are definitely part of the SIM stream family and I hope your around for many more years to come.
Regarding Sir Jackie Stewart. I was fascinated by his recent comment at the Mexican GP. He stated that some years ago he and his old racing buddies carried the remains of Fangio to his resting place. After the Mexican GP he was commissioned to carry Fangio's remains once again to his new museum outside Buenos Aires. Unfortunately he is the only driver left that can carry out this duty. Sad really but nevertheless really poignant.
Thanks again for all you do.

Love your place in the sim racing community, and your focus on the classic cars and tracks (and Sims too in many cases) is excellent to see. Your content, especially as of late has been a bit of an inspiration to some of the videos I've done lately. Your more documentary approach is always very interesting, keep it coming!

I watch a good bit of sim racing content and this channel puts out some of the best content out of all of them. I'm not just saying that because old cars are the key to my heart either. The way you weave in the history of the cars and tracks into your videos - and how I walk away from each one having learned something and having found a new car or track to try out - it's the best.
Do you do any community races / cruises with your viewers? That would be fun.

I barely comment on anything but I have to make an exception here. Thank you so much for all the fun videos in the past year. The documentaries have been fantastic and the racing videos and livestreams very fun. I'm not surprised you're a big fan of LGR. You two definitely have nailed this laid back commentary style that is just very enjoyable to follow. Looking forward to the GPL video you mentioned cause I lost my install a couple of years ago and never had the motivation to do a new one because I remember it was a bit of a hassle back then. Keep up the awesome work Jake!

Thanks for your awesome videos. Can't believe how good GPLegends runs on even my older system i7-4770k plus gtx970. I originally played on a Pentium 2 so the history and tech is interesting. A lot of old games were just years ahead of the computer tech available in the early 2000s. I'm enjoying it again thanks to you.

Love every video you do. They all feel unique, and I never ever skipped ahead in any of them. Sadly, I miss the streams due to time zones, but I sometimes rewatch them when going to bed. Started following sometime during the 1965 season years ago and instantly fell in love with the style of how you showed and raced stuff. Honestly, I never found anyone on YT with as much energy for the history and different games. It's just always awesome to feel the joy you're having, and I always look forward to the next video. Was really happy to see you come back and been watching everything that comes out :). Also, it's always awesome to learn something about the history of motorsport and simracing.

Maybe something you've thought about but would be cool to see some vintage hardware (wheels and pedals etc.) reviews/overviews ala LGR. Of course this is not cheap to do or easy to aquire but maybe people would be willing to loan you stuff. Many thanks for the videos over the years.

Very enjoyable to watch and thanks for all the great content over the year :) Also comforting to hear I'm not the only one who finds live streaming races very stressful (in a good way though). I get the very same experience, it really turns the races against AI into "events", just like in competitive sim racing.

    Hey man!
Really enjoyed this video. This last year I’ve just gotten back into Motorsport. We used to watch nascar when I was little. Now thanks to TH-cam I’m deeply invested in Motorsport again, running league races every week. But your videos scratch an itch for me. I love history (going to college to teach right now) and this channel combines two great passions in my life.
Thank you so much for what you do.

I love simracing vintage racecars. Vintage cars are so much more interesting then modern cars imo. I really wish more people would open their eyes, see the light and get into vintage racing. Unfortunately, most people think GT3 and modern open wheelers are the pinnacle of simracing and they can not be more wrong. It makes me sad :(

Because of you I have reinstalled quite a few sims. Going to get my old Driving Force Pro of of my storage unit. I'm amazed at the number of new short tracks available for N2003 with good AI for a change! You have me want to fire up rFactor1 and see how low I can get a time at the Targa Florio in a Birdcage. Thanks for doing your videos.

What would you need for the 1966 Indianapolis 500? Would a Ford V8 indycar and an Offy I4 indycar be enough? Cause I could probably crank those out pretty fast if it was just those two cars.
And there already exists a 1960s Indianapolis track, though it probably could do with some updates and better AI.
Also, in regard to the 1937 Delahaye 145. I'd love to work with you sometime next year to develop such a mod (probably later on). I'd handle the initial legwork and then you could help once we begin finalizing the last details and working on the physics. I think it would be fun to make an official GP Laps mod.

    • @GPLaps
      @GPLaps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah the problem for me is AC isn’t a great sim to simulate offline races, particularly oval ones. Having the cars would be great fun though and could be awesome in a league setting. But from my experience trying to set up AI is its nearly impossible to get them good on ovals, nevermind the lack of rolling starts, safety cars and proper race strategy.
As for the 145, im all ears! excited for the current pack too though!

Last weekend I tried IRacing for the first time. In the last 35 years I drove almost every Sim in existence, even wrote a physics mod for GTR Evolution with the help of AUDI for the AUDI R8. Spent a whole weekend with that car on different tracks. All I had to spend was money for gas. It was about 800€ XD. Imho IRacing has the best FFB but Assetto Corsa has my heart. It has the cars and tracks that I want to drive. It´s easy to load and runs even on shitty PCs.
