Good interview in Comics Journal 98 with Clay Geerdes, the first real promoter of mini-comics. Around that same time (mid-80's) TCJ ran a survey of contemporary mini-comics and for a while regular reviews on what was happening with minis. Geerdes was a champion of "just make comics" and published Comix World, a newsletter, and helped a lot of newbies to get their feet wet. I ordered from him back in the day and before I knew it he'd talked me into drawing something for him.
Would be a good place for them to start if they decide to do an episode taking a bigger look at the history of minis. Would make a nice companion piece to this and the earlier show and tell they did.
Thank for this Jim. I've been planning on making my own Zine and was wondering how to approach it professionally. This channel keeps delivering the goods!!!
This was really helpful. Ordered the stapler. My printer does double sided printing. It helps a lot. I build my stuff into a pdf. Only a few trials so far. After an art ahow in october im going to give it a real shot. Just a collection of ideas, art photography and words. Thanks for making this
Inspirational video Jim. Thanks for making and sharing. Would you be willing to do video about process before it goes to printer? Not necessarily the drawing itself, but how you organize and construct page layouts, etc. Thanks again.
Grab a straightedge and run the pointy end of that scoring bone done the middle of your covers! It's an extra step but it'll help line up your staples plus it looks nice and cracks less
Great video, Jim. Beautifully explained so clearly. I heard you mention Best Value Copy. Have you made a separate video about setting up your prints with those guys? I went to their website and got lost. Obviously they have the means to print and assemble any zine. But your method allows for flexibility and interjecting odd pages or putting them together in a different sequence. I contacted them by their website to ask about a paper sampler pack.
This is great and I’m going to start to make some zones. What quality of paper is used for the zines? I know some is card stock, but is it a heavier or lighter card stock? Thanks for posting this, it’s a huge help and inspiration!
Were you the one that created Street Angel? I absolutely loved that book--I read it last week and it reminded me of Scott Pilgrim :) such a cool book, and mixes styles together so well
Do you watch any modern wrestling or just old school WWF? Tonight (Saturday) is NJPW's Dominion show and it looks like it's going to be great. It's got Jericho vs. Okada, Naito vs. Ibushi, Dragon Lee vs. Ospreay and Moxley (Dean Ambrose) who just won the IWGP US title, in a match with a young lion.
I keep an eye on modern wrestling. Mostly I listen to podcasts about wrestling. Moxley's story is fascinating. AEW. I've watched some NJPW. But I don't watch much. Mostly just listen to old wrestling stories. - Jim
Thank you. I was doing minis back in the very late 80s but have been out of it for awhile. I recently did a Frankenstein vs. Kong mini for my grandson, and had such a good time I started working on some new scripts. Trying to break into the Big Time never gave me as much joy as my time in the small press. You're an inspiration. Thanks again.
Now I wanna make a zine.
Thanks, Jim. I self-published comics in the 90's and early 2000's. I'm getting back into that again and your channel is very helpful.
The Stanley Bostitch has become the symbol of the small press comics movement!
This is the video I’ve been waiting for... Thank you, Jim!
Been thinking about this for weeks. I think I'm finally goin to pull the lever on this project
You just completely recharged my inspiration battery! 100% FULL

This video is therapeutic for me 😌
Thanks for doing this Jim! Brings back so many memories of high school, putting zines together with my friends in the basement.
I love this video. Watched it several times. Popped up in my algorithm today. Lit a fire under my ass to make something. Thanks, Jim.
Radical, thanks for this!
Thank you! This is saved in my bookmarks for future reference and getting shared.
thank you, Jim! This was so helpful and got me excited to get my work out there.

I love process videos like this! Great information
This was great man
I coallate and fold and THEN staple! I never have trimmed my comics, might be a good idea.
I have friends who fold first, then staple. Nothing wrong with that. - Jim
So straight forward and informative, Jim, thank you.
Jim brings the knowledge!
This is great! Thank you!

The zine dimensions are great for tankobon sized manga. Glad I watched this.
awesome video! inspired me to look into the process of making a mini comic
I might have to make a zine now. Awesome channel, you guys are awesome!

Damn, my Swingline stapler got a dressing down; wish I knew before I bought it a a few years back
Jim looking like Mark Duplass in "Creep" for that first shot.

This is awesome. I'm gong to teach this in my class. Thank you!
Wow! candy for the eye!
Need these!
Great video Jim!!! Dude your zines look so money!!
Hope you're bringing some of those wrestling zines to Charlotte next weekend! That thing just made the Kayfabe table my first stop upon arrival.
I will see you there! - Jim

Very cool, Jim
this is so cool
Very informative... I passed on Rambo 3.5 to buy something else at your table... should've bought both. Next show I will buy it if available!!
Very very cool!
Thing I hate about finding this channel is finding out that the zines presented in this video are sold out.

I tried making my own zine recently. I couldn't get the page order right.
Great!
I’m making my first zine and I gotta say, you’re not wrong about this piece of shit saddle stitch stapler 😂
Were you the one that created Street Angel? I absolutely loved that book--I read it last week and it reminded me of Scott Pilgrim :) such a cool book, and mixes styles together so well
Yup same guy, you’d probably like his other stuff. You can find his more main stream books everywhere. The rest in his web site.
nice!
very cool
Awesome
