Wow! Terrific cast, terrific orchestration, and the terrific original production design, which I wish OH WISH I could have had the opportunity to see. This capture is some compensation.

WOW!!! Had no idea this existed! Was sent a link to clips from 04-06 tour with Kathy and Bradley Dean. The biggest disappointment of this tour was being told we would end with a Broadway run fall of 99. We had all original designs. Costume, lighting, scenic! An impossibly raked stage. I always have wondered if Natalie, Raul or Ray would have received nominations. The Waltz was always amazing. Anna Maria Andracain was out Eva alternate! (She had been a Belle on Broadway and was equally amazing.) Thanks for a wonderful trip down memory lane! Love, Eva’s Attaché, Halden Michaels

Wow !!! Glad I found this ! I saw this wonderful production at the Pantages on Los Angeles back in 1999.

Would you happen to still have your program from that performance, by any chance?
If so, I would love it if you were to check it, and share here, the number of musicians (and kinds of instruments they played) in the orchestra pit. They sound very grand yet modern here!

@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 I still have the program from the same L.A. engagement at the Pantages. Saw it twice. Once with Natalie Toro and once with Ana Maria Andricain. Both were excellent. Here's the listing of the orchestra in my Playbill:
      EVITA Orchestra
      Kevin Farrell - Musical Director
David Thompson - Associate Conductor / Keyboard 1
      Shawn Gough - Keyboard 2
      David Shoup - Guitar
      Randall Klitz - Bass
      Aaron Russell - Drums
      LOCAL Orchestra
Violin - Debra Price; Kimyo Takeya
      Cello - Ernie Ehrhardt
Woodwinds - Steve Kujala; Jim Ercole; Mike Vaccaro
Trumpet - Stu Blumberg; Wayne Bergeron
      Trombone - Andrew Martin
French Horn - Nathan Campbell; Paul Stevens
      Percussion - Wade Cullbreath
Keyboards - Carol Anderson; Faith Seetoo
      Musical Contractor - Brian Miller
Like most orchestra listings in Playbills, it's very general and they don't specify the true number of instruments but in general the orchestration used was almost identical to the one used originally on Broadway so what they used then was used here too. It was a fantastic sounding orchestra but I must admit even though I've always been appreciative and always a great fan of orchestration, orchestras like these were standard at the time so looking back now it seems so luxurious compared to today's corner-cutting standards. I'm just glad I took it all in and really appreciated those full orchestras back then. Little did I know that all kinds of tricks would be used these days including completely reorchestrating an entire show (Les Mis) all for the purpose of saving money by cutting musicians and passing it off as an update or a pretentious "chamber orchestra." The new EVITA orchestrations are horrible as well. It's like Andrew Lloyd Webber wants to hammer into our heads that this takes place in Argentina and TANGO TANGO TANGO. Every number is infused with tango-style orchestration. It's terrible. This was so much better.

Do you guys realize how effortlessly Toro is just blazing those high belts? I never knew this existed nor that she'd done the role ever! I saw her 2x as Eponine and always remembered that she'd been someone that never did a mainstage role at Boston Conservatory while there and SHOWED THEM ALL by getting Eponine after graduating. This performance is especially a nice fuck you to that school!

The arrangements for this are something else, probably my favourite from across the show's history! Before hearing the music from from this era of Evita productions, the modern orchestrations always appeared to be quite a sudden shift. I can now see the thread that runs from the original productions and the film, through this millennium period, into the modern revivals.

I think the modern orchestrations (and the movie) stayed true to the original Evita concept album instead of the broadway orchestrations

The arrangements for “I’d Be Surprisingly Good for You” hits that sweet spot between the sound of the original and revival.

Raymond Jaramillo McLeod's Peron at the start of A New Argentina honestly took me by surprise. Nobody goes in and expects somebody to take the "Dice are rolling" verse down the octave, but he does it with an impressive, sultry timbre as opposed to sounding forced, all too common for an E2.

I saw this production when it came to Boston and it was fantastic!! It was great to see the original choreography and costumes! And Natalie Toro was wonderful! The tour I saw a few years later was horrible! The orchestrations were so pared down, it sounded like a 5 piece band. I did see the “newer” staged version years later, which I’m not a fan of and find it quite boring. For me, the original staged version with the original orchestrations, choreography and costumes is the only way to see Evita.

I honestly wasn't a fan either when I saw her in the show. I know now it's because she seemed ill-fitted for the part which to me was owned by Patti LuPone. Not only did Toro look like a little girl, she sounded like one so it was as if they cast a minor in the role, lol. And I just couldn't get past that. Thankfully she really grew on me years later when Iearned to enjoy her performance for what it is and not what I felt it should be. There have been many LuPone clones out there and even those never meet her greatness so what's the point in copying the Godess LuP{one. I appreciate Toro's feisty and comical little Eva these days and wish I had enjoyed her when I actually saw her live on stage. She's phenomenal and is probably the only one I've ever seen or heard that hits every single note effortlessly. Not even La LuPone was able to do that! LuPone will always be the Evita Queen but Toro has earned her place as the Evita Princess! I love her!
