That's right, that's generally what *Feel* is, but we'll get to that.
It's all about function over form.

    • @sosasees

Traditional animation (animating a video that plays the same every time)
      is also heavily based on
      Function over Form.
It's just that the Function is different in video games so the Form has to adapt.

Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf is a big part of my childhood, and the animation in that game, given the minimal resources the animators had to work with, are still fascinating to me even today. Infogrames got so much about cartoon-y animation right in that rather underappreciated game that even modern developers don't live up to.

      Video Game Animation Study
Hi! Erm its was a research project proposal on what 2D Animator need to consider to apply when stepping into 3D games.
I used the 12 principles to inform my understanding of Coopers 5 fundamentals and game anim in general then focused more on how you can use the technical aspects of the engine to achieve an cartoony outcome.
I’m still a newbie to it all so it was more about pooling all the information into a practical application.... and this comment is written better then my proposal.... hahahaha
I am so glad you and Cooper and the other TH-cam animation channels do what you do to demystify this as It was a little hard coming from a feature anim style educational starting point.
Keep up the awesome, high quality work! Your channel Super helpful!

2:29 That was superb.Capcom really nailed it with those backgrounds.
The atmosphere is vibrant and the characters look like oversized giant humans.
Your recommendations for new channels was too long. The community section would have sufficed but its alright.
What games are you planning to give spotlights in the near future.
In my humble opinion studying the atmosphere, vibe, environment is easy so you could do it.I suppose its not that hard when you take a look at the graphics and say how you feel.

A crucial difference between traditional animation, movies and so on, of game animation is the use of anticipation. In fact, anticipation should be greatly reduced or even nonexistent in some cases, especially for intense action games such as fighting games. The delay that anticipation causes in game actions disrupts the player's experience.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

True, but it's needed for enemy telegraphing, otherwise gameplay would be too hard. Cuphead and Darksouls, for example.

@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Yes, correct! I forgot to mention that I was referring to characters controlled by player. In the case of npcs, the anticipation is very important.

Nicely done! Its an interesting set of questions that are valuable in determining how well animation is working in a video game.
Feel: Does the animation compliment gameplay?
Fluidity: How well does it balance between various animation states?
Readability: Does the animation communicate what action is supposed to be taking place? (telegraphed attacks etc.)
Context: Will this animation suit what actions need to be done in game?
Elegance: Can the animation be used in a more efficient or convincing manner? (for production or otherwise)
I also wonder how you feel about one more fundamental that seems hinted at but not explicitly stated?
Control: Does the computer, player, AI, or animator control what is happening?
Basically a question of what combination of procedural animation, animator driven animation, and user controlled input is being used to achieve the final result.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy

Interesting. This is definitely a question for more modern games, I think Grow Home would be a good example of this.

I don't know if you agree with me on this, but your point was perfectly exemplified in his _GTA: SA vs GTA V_ running anim. comparison. While the latter certainly _looks_ better, it’s also cumbersome - almost a non-option. This hunger for fluidity and bounciness thus ruining what was before an uncomplicated and to the point mechanic.

The fact that even when talking about animation in games, your main concern is with story, cinematic aspect, camera, etc, is saddening and the reason why most games nowadays are basically braindead interactive movies... People with movie/TV background should have no saying or go anywhere near the gaming industry, you have done way more harm than anything else.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I'm saying that story, cinematic BS and "realism" are irrelevant to most games (at least, stories can be told in games without being too intrusive and costly development-wise) and that the big focus on making games as close to movies as possible by AAA studios has ruined games.
Just take trash such as The Witcher 3 or Ghost of Tsushima as example. They are praised by casual "gamers" and journalists as masterpieces but their gameplay is beyond generic and awful (Witcher 3's combat is one of the worst I have seen in my nearly 3 decades of gaming)

@@VideoGameAnimationStudy really? I'm not even gonna start an argument over how awfully buggy and poorly optimized games have become, or plagued with microTX/lootboxes/DLCs/season passes.
Many games have become so formulaic and braindead (cough cough Ubishit and Bethesda "games") and even Sony's IPs, despite being well done, are nothing more than garbage open worlds such as Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima or interactive movies such as TLOU, Uncharted, The Order, heck, even God of War, one of my fav franchises, got rebooted into a boring, stiff TLOU wannabe, Kratos controls like a wardrobe, many animations look fake and unconvincing, wonky hitboxes, awfully zoomed in camera, etc.
And I dont play Nintendo's awfully outdated and cartoonish games (except for Metroid/Castlevania/Monster Hunter and some other retro stuff) and 99% of indies games are pure junkware that can't provide the same level of gameplay and content an AA-AAA game can.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy

To me this just sounds like you don't enjoy games generally or haven't been exposed to the ones you'll enjoy. The beautiful thing about games is that there's something for everyone and it's so diverse.
What is your favourite games(s) then?
