This video had good points. While the Brer Rabbit stories were metaphors for the enslaved people to undermine the oppression, they were trickster tales with African roots that existed prior to slavery, and they have great moral lessons. I do believe that Zipadee do dah can be enjoyed a classic song. It’s a Disney anthem, and I personally think it was unnecessary to remove it. Anyways, I am glad that you are educating on this history.
Disney has a long history of engaging with the south.. but what happens when times change? Here are 5 examples of how Disney adapted to the changing depiction of the south.
Sounds like you want Disney to be a history book rather than entertainment. Yes the past is full of horrors, but Disney chose to look on the positive side. If that upsets you, then watch a more adult film or go to a more adult theme park. For me and my childhood, I’ll sing zip a Dee doo dah without any conflict of conscience.
Thanks for your comment. I'm more interested in the nuance of what is retained and what is removed as we choose what constitutes our collective "childhood". Later in the video, we talk about nostalgia and how it serves as a cure for homesickness. But whose nostalgia? Whose idea of home?
