Growing up in a community with few Black students and little emphasis on the Civil War, other than "slavery ended and Lincoln suffered from a sudden head trauma," This film was my introduction into the immense role played by Black men and women prior to, during, and after the Civil War. I try to show this film whenever I can to my students to have them consider the diversity of views from the period.

Agree. A lot of folks didn’t know Black soldiers fought in the Civil War until Glory came out! Thanks for watching

      “Immense”
Black soldiers made up 10% of all Union troops. Additionally most did not serve in combat units due to racist policies.
White men-many of whom were immigrants from Europe where slavery and black people were entirely foreign to them-died in huge numbers.
The Civil War was a war caused by white men, largely fought by white men, and won primarily by white men using Grant’s brilliance and the North’s numerical and industrial superiority.
The North had 22 million citizens. The South 9 million.(4 million of which were enslaved people who would never be able to serve in the armies of the CSA.) The North had an enormous advantage in industrial capacity a critical element in modern warfare.
Black Americans did indeed serve when permitted to do so and made significant contributions to the war effort in numerous other areas as well. They played an important role.
But the war was won by Northern white men.Without them there is no war and no emancipation.(Of course white men created the evil of American slavery and the culture of whiteness that propped it up for so long. The war was the fruit of a poisonous tree.)

I think it is one of the few perfect films out there, great acting, great directing and great cinematography.

It is above and beyond many that have been included in that recognition.🤔

Glory isn’t just a civil rights movie, it’s a movie about what it means to be an American

An amazing movie that is one of the more historically accurate war movies Hollywood has made. However, the scene that it's most remembered for the flogging of Denzel's character is one of those inaccuracies. No one in the 54th was flogged as a punishment, as flogging had been banned in the US military in 1861 and the 54th wasn't formed until 1862. Had Shaw ordered the flogging of any of the men under his command, he at the very least would've been dishonorably discharged from the army.
Now had it still been an option, flogging would've probably been the lesser punishment, as the punishment for desertion would've been death, or he would've been sent to a POW camp with the possibility of hard labor as part of that punishment for the duration of the war. This would've been a Union POW camp that would've been full of Confederates, and so likewise would've most likely been a death sentence.
Another inaccuracy was that it was Shaw who organized the pay boycott of his men when he learned they were to receive lower pay.
However, I can understand having these inaccuracies in the movie from a narrative standpoint. To show off the scars on Trip's back helps drive the emancipation cause of the reason for the Civil War, and condensing the pay issue to that one scene shows Shaw winning the support of his men.
Again, it is a tremendous movie and should be mandatory viewing for everyone, and incredible performances from the entire cast and crew.

Thanks for this thoughtful response. And appreciate how you tie it into the emancipation cause for the civil war

Resisting the white savior narrative seems to be the hardest thing for Hollywood to do. Glory comes really, really close. They deserve inclusion just for that. The memorial to the 54th in Boston, the closing shot, is an amazing work of art with its own story.

It is really a powerful movie... and it's really interesting to think about the films that came after it that still had the white savior narrative. Maybe I should make a video about the white savior narrative -- what do you think?

Glory wasn’t “white savior”. Like it or not it took white men advocating for the formation of black regiments for units like the 54th regiment to come into being.
