If you want to see more farming simulator stuff from me, I tried out Stardew Valley Multiplayer with my friends for the first time! ➣ th-cam.com/video/o3vhOpqglac/w-d-xo.html
Rune Factory 2 was my first game, and I've always loved it! I played a little of the fourth, but I have very fond memories of RF2. I think it will always be my favourite one for that reason. The music always makes me cry as it reminds me of all those memories.
As someone who's played the whole series as it's come out and recently revisited them all..... the first one is EASILY the worst, as the entirety of the gameplay just feels super slow, as well as the animations being really jittery. I don't truly find any of the games "bad" though, the first just shows its "first game clunk" is all. I won't lie actually, but I feel like they should REALLY do the "Special" treatment to all 3 of the DS entries, as I feel like all 3 games would do well on the engine used in 4 Special, and it'd be really nice to have them all in one place again.
The first one was so rough that it felt bootleg. Which for me actually kind of added to the experience, because... I dunno, it felt mysterious, or something?
Aw man, you never played the second half? If you didn't mind the first gen, the game really comes online in the second half, as you noted. It's so wild and fun, I hope you come back to this eventually!
4 and 2 are actually my favorites, because it doesn't "end" after marriage. 1, I wanted Mist, and to marry her I'd have to finish the story first, and unlike Harvest Moon/SoS games like FoMT everything's over after that, only boring ass gameplay. 2, I think fans hated that Kyle is just too weak compared to his son/daughter, but I think I felt satisfied when I finish it because it takes much effort to finish it. Or maybe the voice actors of the English version. 3, I love the characters and the storyline, but same quirk as 1, we have Sharance Maze as a post-game dungeon but it doesn't have a "story", it'd be fun with online play but in this age the service has shut down, we literally have to finish the game if we want to see our wife intact, and once it's over, the story's over. 4 is the best, dynamic dialogues that never make you bored, the English VAs are pretty good too, refined mechanics brought from 3 now enhanced, and 3 full story arcs + sharance maze if you're into that, even after all of it is over the dynamic dialogues will keep you playing for a while, and ability to play as a woman for female players. And out of all bachelor/ettes, only Doug needs you to finish Arc 1 and 2 (the "main story") first. I married Dolce before defeating Ethelberd iirc.
with 2 it's less the father vs child in strength and more that I was playing a character who suffered from amnesia and settled in this town in a demo version of the game, just for that character to be yanked away from me so he could go buy milk and I was saddled with another character to play as for the full game, I lost the investment and steam I had in the earlier part of the game and sort of either didn't care to finish or have completely forgotten all of the rest of the game as I only remember buying stuff for the school. with 4 I never really cared about Doug he stalks you and then tries to stop you from saving Venti, having just recently started replaying it looks to me like he probably knows some of your background and never coughs it up...
"The worst one" yall ripping my heart apart XD honestly i see where folks are coming from when they have their criticisms. But rf2 was my first game and my nostalgia glasses are firmly in place I also like this format! I enjoyed watching you play through the games and your commentary in rf1, but I also liked the way you kinda disected the games features in this one
Shame you haven't done the second half, which honestly makes the first half worth it in every way. First half can definitely be a slog to get through, especially once you've already married someone. Despite that, Rune Factory 2 is my favorite in the series, right next to Frontier, and still remains the only one I've played through and finished multiple times.
When I was a kid, I remember working to get all the bachelorettes to level 10 so I could marry them all lmao. Definitely extended the game. Also I remember marrying Yue making the 2nd arc weird, because I couldn't buy any of the school upgrades from her and it essentially softlocked my game.
The second generation is where the meat of this game yes you play as another character but your child has access to blocked roads (cause they are small enough to squeeze thru the fences) and most of the missing mechanics Like crafting and upgrading at in second generation making 1st gens only purpose is to build the school and other things (I left my second generation an early wolf pet cause apparently in second generation you won't get one till later)
With the help of some old GameFaqs advice I stumbled across, I found out that grinding out magic and updating spellbooks via requests completely trivializes the need for crafting in the second arc. It's obvious that the devs intended for the second arc to hinge on crafting progression, but magic is stupid busted at a high level in RF2.
This is a really good video!!!! Ty for making some really good rune factory content!!! I rarely see well written videos like this in the fandom and i love seeing the older games get covered :DD just subbed
7:04 dang, the Yo-kai Watch Uptown Springdale theme makes me want to play it again. When I checked the description, I noticed it was missing from the background music section? Just a small detail, love the video.
There is one thing I DESPISE in RF2. For some statues in gen2, especially in the final dungeon, you had to fully grow crops on some fields. But not just collect them... they need to stay on field, perfect and healthy in a full formation. And imagine my mood when I tryed to grow them only to THREE GODFORSAKEN STORM during the process. And every time on of the plants got destroyed so I needed to grow it again while carrying abot other ones that already grown. 12 day challenge suddenly morphed into 30 day one. One could say that I could simply use fortuneteller's weather change, and yes, I actually used it, and she saved me from TWO MORE STORMS during THREE WEEKS. BUT... she doesn't work during rainy days or hollidays. Guess after what day I got storm again? I dunno if rng in that exact game was so evil or it was simply my most unlucky run. Cause thise 50% crafts actually working only after 10 retryings gave me PTSD.
Personally love 2 more than 3, but I'm barely playing 3 right now. After playing 2, 1 was really easy if not long. I kept thinking that the bosses shouldn't have been this easy. What bugs me most about 3 is the fast regrow time for the weeds and stuff so I don't feel like I can interact with the people as much as I did for 1 & 2. Also don't care for the recipe bread gimic. I liked either the books or taking classes as it felt like I was actually learning things. Biggest complaints about 2 were the glitches that made me lose days if I didn't save before doing something, especially going into the barn. 1 has similar glitches but not as often. 3's controls are very sensitive too so using the stylus seems to work better on the farm and I don't like carrying my tool out in the open when running. And the people are harder to keep track of, running away too fast for me to get to them and catch up. Okay, series is fun and relaxing but I'm still gonna nitpick. 2's my current fave but I wish Mom would give me a discount and a relationship boost. =P
It's been a while since I commented, I been really sick, so your vids have been a way for me to take my mind off of things. Anyway, one thing's for sure, no matter what rune factory it is, we will all miss Mist's roasts, seriously that was awesome to watch
Wow, I was right xD, I'm sure the game will end in a more pleasant way than reality, but that's a very smart way to have a second half/act of a farming/any game. It makes having kids in these types of games actually interesting lol
I got this game for Christmas and fell in love with it. I had no knowledge of the other games or the second half of the game. I wound up really enjoying the quests, capturing an ice wolf for my barn, and trying to romance my character with Cecilia.
Rune Factory 2 is the worst for the sole fact it has the most god-awful voice acting. And the glitches are most likely thanks to Natsume's MO of shoddy localizations. They royally screwed up Harvest Moon DS in an awful way. Marvelous switching to XSEED after RF3 was a godsend.
I actually like 2, but... It is very different from the others, so I get why people hate on it. Still, it was also the first one of the series you could actually play as a girl, which was neat. I also really liked Julia and Yue a lot.
Personally I liked how rest of the bachelorettes don't end up forever single, but find partners of their own. This is the one feature they should restore in future tittles. It always made the town REALLY sad, when the only person who was able to find partner/love was the protagonist, and rest were destined to die alone, unloved, standing in the rain so their tears couldn't be seen etc.
The way you described the story oddly reminds me of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. You arrive in a village with amnesia, build friendships with the other Pokémon in the village, and then ultimately leave because of a goal that no one else knows. Then you go to pursue the more important part of the story. Except for that the leaving part in Rune Factory seems kind of abrupt whereas the one in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon was built up to.
It's a rune factory staple that the protags aside from 2's second generation have amnesia I wouldn't be surprised if 5 has that opening where the Mc has amnesia.
RF2 was my first game in the RF franchise and the reason why I fell in love with it. I really enjoyed the love triangles and the story aspect. (RF4 being my favorite of course) but would love to see a special version of RF2 because of the second generation story
I mean: it depends. The old dogs like me find RF1 and RF2 pretty enjoyable, although the two are kinda eclipsed by the simple, fast-paced, and simply best chars of RF3. While RF4 is a RF3 but with weight bcs they designed the game to be consumed for years (as they knew Neverland was dying). A lot of new fans came between RF3 - RF4 - post Neverland, actually. That's why for them RF4 is very sophisticated, the simple, with a huge downtime of gameplay like RF1 to be heavy grind. RF2 was just streamlined grind to RF1, and with the complication, those new people are hardly impressed. Which one is worst? Surely RF1, if you want to talk gameplay. Like dude you finished the first 3 dungeons in 3 weeks (faster, actually. My personal record was... 10 days? I forgot. and I still think I can cut a lot of time from that) and then you have to wait until winter (so like 70 days) for the lake to freeze. There's way to bug yourself into the island that leads to the 4th dungeon. There's no way to bug yourself out, and if I remember right teleport was off? Either way, I always ended up waiting the time anyway. Grinding, farming, having a healthy relationship with every single girl in the town, etc. Fortunately: the girls are alright, all of them. Problem with RF2? The main feature is time-gated kek. Yeah 1st gen 2nd gen. But there's one thing RF2 is best at: they have the best music piece in RF history. It's the romance theme (Love theme), which ever since then always makes an appearance in future games other than RFF.
I have some nostalgia for RF2, but having actually beaten it last year left me feeling underwhelmed. Alvarna is a beautiful setting and splitting the story/gameplay into two phases is a neat idea, but some of the design decisions resulting from that are mixed.
while i am a bit bias because rf2 was my first rf game, nothing beats finishing the 3rd dungeon in rf1 in early summer and then having to wait to until winter to progress. that shit was wack bruh
Honestly this one really was the worst one in the series. For some reason every time I make it to the second gen get bored of it and stop playing it. The combat is very slow and there's only 5 dungeons. And the difficulty between each dungeon is insane lol. Idk I really do want to actually finish this game one day.
I am with the people who think RF2 is the weakest in the series. Which isn't to say I don't enjoy it- this is my favorite game series, so I still love my least favorite. That said... I don't like that the first half feels like being stuck in demo mode, and I don't like all the physical barriers in dungeons in the second half. It slowed me down even more in a game when I was already taking my time. To this day, I feel snubbed at how hard they changed the camping mechanics and the portals in general. In the first game, I grew crops and didn't harvest them in order to generate runes for myself every day, making it the most "rune factory" game to me. While I liked the second game when it game out, I always liked the first better. I also learned on my most recent playthrough that I played the first game so much when I was young, before my depression and anxiety hit, the music transported me back, and I burst into tears because I couldn't remember the last time I felt so completely relaxed. So, it is entirely possible that my opinions are tinted by emotional bias. XD
If you want to see more farming simulator stuff from me, I tried out Stardew Valley Multiplayer with my friends for the first time!

@@Hakajin I can understand that actually. There's a certain charm to things that have a level of "clunk" to them instead of being super polished.
We're only getting 3 special and that's it, because the third game is the one that has the improved engine (later used on rf4).
For 1 and 2, it would require a full-blown remake instead of a "special" upscale. Games are too painfully dated
@thatanonwholurksmoar7386 yeah. But that's also pretty easy now that 3 has been done, since that can be the base engine to work in.
