- On June 27, 2010, Rhys Millen attempted to beat the current "Unlimited Class" World Record of 10:01.408 at the 88th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the "Race to the Clouds." For 10 years, it has been Rhys' dream to break the 10-minute barrier and this year he hoped to capture the elusive record and return it to the Millen name. This is look at his run and the challenges he faced in his custom built Genesis PM580: a 1,850 pound, 750 horse power V6 designed specifically to conquer the 156 turns of this 12.52 mile course (of which this year, half is pavement) that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit.

holy crap you can see how much and how fast he fishtailed when he drifted through those corners! in a freaking prototype-class vehicle no less! insaneee :D
Well done video. Thanks for the 720p. Car sounds great. The weather is always a major factor. Next year sub-10 minutes.
Great effort. Next year Rhys!
Love the sound of this car, and god a nice taste of music in this video ! :D
It's sad to hear Pikes Peak is going to be paved all the way. The hill climb is never going to be as legendary as it is with dirt/tarmac variations.
I met him yesterday at the Pikes Peak Race prep, nicest guy you'd ever meet. Cutest dimples ever.
Its paved all the way now. Maybe he'll break the record this year
WOW!!!!Veramente fantastico il pilota e la macchina!!!!
Ari Vatenen and the Peugeot Climb Dance video is still the best Pikes Peak video ever.
Congrats!
@sunnywrc the 405 was producing around 680lb ft of torque for pikes peak and ran 600bhp as the handling was was to unpredictable at 800bhp
A game-changer for sure!
You gotta know, 'the race to the clouds" is where it's at! This is where the real drivers go when they want to pucker-up...
Thanks for sharing, see you in July!

@NoClassic
true, it's an editing issue. The claims were recorded 4 1/2 months before the race while the vehicle was still under contruction. I do believe we have the correct package but we only had 3 days of testing before the event because of a delayed build time. now we have 12 months and no excusses next year ;)
Nice vid. I would like to see the onboard footage all the way up though : )
@ZagatoZee totally agree. i like older cars better in general, and the older look of the video is just cool :)
that thing is a BEAST!
Wish they would upload the full run.
@Jehco14 It's just designed based on Le Mans downforce. Look up the tube frame stock cars, too. That's cool.
@vinehanger i think its just the engine but its hard to say that the escudo is a vitara
I love the guys who cheered for Millsn when he left at 3:33
Sounds amazing
@sunnywrc sorry my mistake the torque was in a kw i think. it was 685 kw so whats that in lb ft?? the road going pug was a 2ltr but i think the pikes peak engine was a 2.3 it hit max torque high in the revs aperently but i doubt it. the pug was a beast in every way and it set its time on dirt, imagine what Ari could do now
@donwaza considering the only hyundai part on that car was the engine... and it was the transmission, brakes, suspension, and everything else they had problems with... the problem seems to be not enough hyundai.
=P
LOL. I thought at 1:50 that there was rubber laid down on the dirt. But then I looked again and realized that that is a paved road, it's just hard to tell it's so dirty. I wonder how all that dirt affects traction? I've found around here anyway that dirt over pavement can be way more treacherous than just plain dirt can be.
now the course record after 2011 is 9.51.278 by Tajima, and he got the record with a fan belt snapped, water pump broken car. next year all pikes peak roads are said to be covered in asphalt, so dirt/tarmac record will stand unbroken by the "monster" forever. side note, 2011 had another new record for RWD at 11.33.734 by Toshiki Yoshioka, overwriting the record held by Rhys Millen at 12.09.397. Rhys Millen get yourself in gear, you got beat by a fellow drifter and a 61 year old grand pa
@Paganiproductions
Good luck next year Rys Millen
Awesome video awessome driver awesome car
My middle name is Rhys and I bet you can guess who I'm named after👍😆
I would love to meet him in person.
cant wait to go and watch the race this year. gotta keep the the same rutine. get one hour of rest leave my house at 1:00am get in line at about 2:00am wait till the gates open at 4:00am and then start drinking beer at 9:00am.
translation "we built a car you can't drive everyday"
Tajima will break the 10 minute barrier next year for sure. I don't know if Millen can match him step for step.
Rhys Millen this year ended up second with 9:02.192
50 seconds behind Loeb, on a 9 minutes race.
It's a no comparison, you can't even say that Loeb isn't good on gravel, because he the greatest all time for that.
If any, it's bad for Loeb, because people will undervalue his record because of the lack of dirt, a record he would've had anyway.
I loved the part about all of the things that broke. Well... You are sponsored by hyundai... Should have seen that coming.
@NoClassic yeah... welcome to rhys millen..
One of the highest track in the world at 14,000 feet!
@Oogie1st That specific spot was an editing effect. just letten you know
please turn10, put this track on forza, pretty please!!
@luedriver peugeot used a 4cylinder turbo that could produce 800+hp the car itself weighed 850kg and it could and that was in 88 i think at the latest 90, power to weight is what is what is important a bigger engine means more weight
Audi y Peugeot lejos lo mejor q ha rodado en esta pista!!!! for ever
Nothing beats Walter Röhrl´s run at pikes peak....on gravel...
Iwant Anaivanovic I think Ari's Peugeot was actually better car specialise, so that might put Walter as a slightly faster driver ultimately. but who am I to know for sure. I'd put them side by side. time difference was insignificant anyway. but I do dare to put Rod Millen between them too. and he built his cars himself !!!
Rhys Millen is the greatest driver in the modern era. Block has nothing on this guy.
@SPEEDMARSHALL
It's about as far from the original engine as it can get - not that there is anything inherently wrong with a Hyundai engine.
They're won several international engine awards for some of their builds, you know.
He's from New Zealand
Im surprised they didn't go into more detail about the car
Seeing that beast reminds me of Gran Turismo
i touch myself inapproprietly when i see this car
PIKES PEAK VERSION THE ORIGINAL WAS THE EBST LOOKING AND AMAZING
If this PM580 was AWD instead of RWD, dude, it would dominate.
the LOEB record is just a time for this new FULL TARMAC pikes peak course, he run with No gravel and No rain...
the announced by the media is just what it is, a record, but a record for this new course, everyone is jumping about loeb victory, this record will be brake sooner than we think by the pikes peak habitual Pilots like Rhys Millen's ou tajima
Understood All well and good. There was no complaint from YM88. But from a driving POV the dirt guys were the heroes..
Wow!
@MongooseFreeRider i had a flashback of the Escudo in GT2
@YourMother88 Well said.
Also, what's up with these new LMP-looking rally cars? I appologize for my lack of knowledge, last time I was an active rally follower was about a decade ago.
Editing blows.
good old kiwis thrashing the world again.good luck rhys and team, ive every confidence you will do it............just a matter of time.
He's from Compton
is there a full video somewhere ?
@sudeshsookdeo And Seattle Circuit. And Test Course. And Route 11.
I get the feeling looking at the car, that the main reason why its designed like a Le Mans car is for when the road is fully paved over.
@sudeshsookdeo its in the game "Drit"
When it goes completely to asphalt who is going to give a shit about Under Ten Minutes. Monster Suzuki!!!
the monster suzuki still turned in the highest recourd for pikes peak in 2010. and i think that if they can hit 11 minutes the extra sec could be made up by rhys (weather premitting) his car has the right idea down but its got too much new stuff that they have never worked with befor. give him another 2 years will see the 10 minute recourd fall. if not by rhys the suzuki team will do it.
i see a lot of comments saying Loeb had it easy... i tell you wrc drivers go through the most extreme of conditions rain, dirt, mud, gravel, snow, fog all kinds of conditions so it i think even with dirt I think Loeb could still do a pretty fast time. just watch wrc craziest moments and you'll know what i'm talking about.
it's called monster sport sx4 now!
@29birthday Wait a few minutes. The quality will get better
i really thought team Red Bull would pull it of. its not often you see a fail. nice work though guys!!
All for making it more affordable for the teams and manufacturers. It means you don't need to have AWD and such stuff like that.
@sudeshsookdeo let's hope this car is in it as well
a Prototype Racecar on a Rally track. Now I've seen everything ;)
You need more that 750 little ponies.
You gotta have a huge set of brass balls to race this track. It's a loooong way down!
PLease! :D This car looks so much fun! ^_^ I would like to have this or just the remains of it when you're done with it guys! :) It's the most impressive build I've seen so far! :D .. I can't pay you anything, but I'll race for you to get the money then? =)
That's one reason.....
Looks like the old Toyota GT One
Maybe next time
on pikes peak aero is as important if not more then the chassis design
Hey, what's the difference between Pikes Peak Unlimited and Group B? Okay, I know Group B was only about touring cars, I mean other technical regulations.
cant wait for leadfoot festival
Why not? You do realise there's an unlimited class? i.e. almost anything goes. If anything the Peugot 208 T16 is closer to a Le Mans prototype- it shares suspension, brakes and aero packaging with the 908 hdi.
Now can someone remind me? Are they referring to the record held by one of the "Monster" Suzukis?
@gentarion rhys millen is FAR from any wannabe hillbilly superstar. hes from new zealand so theres where the accents from. Also, he has been racing pikes peak for 15+ years. if anyone can break the 10 minute barrier its him. youve you knew the list of drivers that have tried the mountain and failed, youd be suprised. that list includes travis pastrana(totalled), ari vatanen, marcus gronholm, and many many "rally champions"
it said third overall, meaning outright.
make that 8
they paved it because there was environmental problems that the dirt road was causing to fish and wildlife as well as the road itself deteriorating really quickly. They didn't destroy it they're preserving what they can so that pikes peak wont go extinct.
On dirt.
_That_'s a genesis? o.O
this is the best hyandai i have even seen - the front i meant!
pretty awesome, sport?, or whatever it is considered
awd is never "necessary" but it pulls out the most potential from the car, so why not have it? certainly for a race like this where your on multiple road textures.
That's quite unusual to see that kind of car "off road"
thing is he had pproblems on the run and did it in semi wet conditions
nice
No reason to use a big cube turbo v8 I guess, FFS GTP cars were making more power in the mid 80's.
Suzuki #1
This is true! Pikes Peaks should've never been paved.
They are the most complex cars of all times, they are far more complicated and well engineered than this car. They have better aero and weight than this car will ever have. Only reason F1s have open wheel is because of the regulations.
Give'em hell next year Rhys. Tell Rod to jump back in a car and come back and race
nothing like Rod Millen and the Toyota Tacoma...
Whatever that is it needs to be produced in a road version or at least a Le Mans version.
