So I took the chip and replaced it with a chip from another game. Then I wrapped the box in plastic wrap. The store manager was suspicious because the box was wrapped that way. But he finally approved the refund. I showed my friend the game, and he thought I was a hacker. I can't believe he couldn't figure out how I did it.

What a great video, it’s really exciting when people share their unique items with the community. I know some people ‘feel’ certain type of ways about roms in general but it’s really nice when people can enjoy history like that
That's because they treat game builds as money. If they don't like the build they have, then they can just trade it with some other hoarder for another build that they don't have, or just sell it for a high price.
Had something similar in my childhood, my dad worked for a bank doing small business loans and he did the loans for a company that leases arcade machines out so for the arcades in tourist areas or pizza place etc. He took me to meet the owners one day and they are like hey want to have some fun? They gave me a key that unlocked the front door of the machines so I could just blip the credit counter. Basically got to play ALL the new arcade games for free for like 4 hours while my dad was in a meeting with them for them to get more financing. They also lent us their box truck when we moved. Company is still around and does the same thing though of course the machines they lease out now are primarily the more expensive cockpit style ones that no home user could ever hope to properly replicate as those are really the only ones that draw big money that and pinball machines.
The closest thing in my childhood that came to this was my mom working for Cheryl's Cookies in the data entry Department, I would get new cookie flavors and stuff all the time before they released. Honestly though I wish she'd worked for Sega or something because vidjagames.
That is awessome. It may not be Alien Storm but preserving something like a prototype tech demo is amazing. You sir are a true asset to the video game community. Love your channel, most recently used the Tony Hacks to run backups on an old PS1 I had laying around. So nice to be able to take back up copies of games with me rather than the more valuable originals when going to a buddy's place where we have retro game night with PS1, Sega Saturn, SNES etc.
I've come across a similar proto packaged the same way. It was a "black label" cartridge just like this one (the game title on the label was a early Sega launch title), but the prototype PCB board inside had a game from EA. I picked it up at a thrift store in California. Had no idea it was even a prototype until I plugged it in one day to test, got confused because the game didn't match the label, then opened it up to see what was going on. Seems like this might have been something Sega did frequently, probably for internal testing/loaning out to family of employees for feedback?
This is one of the coolest prototype finds for me in recent memory. _Bio-Hazard Battle_ was one of the few games I had growing up that nobody else had heard of, but always loved it once I introduced them. It remains one of my favorite Genesis games ever, and while this is only a short demo and not also awesome _Alien Storm_ , the fact anything is even being mentioned of this sorely _under_ talked about atmospheric bio-horror shooter from Sega is amazing! Thank you for the chance to play it!
As a guy who were involved in disk copiers and emulators since the mid 1990's....... I was dense, however once I saw those comments I also started to chuckle.
@@StriderVM We all have an inner 5 year old inside hidden somewhere. I was also involved but with translating English developed games to both official and unofficial Japanese localized versions. Lots of dumping.. carts that is.
If you're dealing with such ambiguous words on a regular basis, especially in a professional enviroment, the joke wears off really fast. Unless there happens to be some absurdly ludicrous combination of words that reminds you of the other meaning, you're pretty much immune.
Ah, the good old days. I had an Aunt who worked for NEC, and while it wasn't in the capacity as this, she bought me a lot of my TG-16 stuff discounted back then.
BHB was my favorite game on the genesis. We rented it a lot with a friend. Great music, great bug invasion ambience. Thank you Connor for the cart and MVG for sharing the proto. I'm going to enjoy this ROM.
pretty cool find it's always interesting to see how devs are still learning hardware like the genesis one thing i noticed was in the demo build the green beam was a giant square like line instead of a swirling line little things like that show you how stuff like drawing the tiny green beam took more time

It's such a great message here - dumping classic ROM images is just so important (for preservation purposes, if anything else). Regardless of what game this was, it's great that the community now have this ROM available. Hats off to all involved in supplying and dumping this image !
Awesome Vapor Trail opening, I bet most ppl won't even realize that banging tune is a Genesis game. Bio Hazard Battle is a really good shooter/game with some great haunting/atmospheric songs. Being able to control your option would have made it one of the best shooters of the day but still fun.
The beautiful thing is it's different when it comes to prototype ROMs. For the simple fact of releasing it will not usurp the marketplace of the current IP
Not a surprise in the least that it was not actually an Alien Storm ROM as that game "does not appear" to have even been released in Canada during Irwin's distribution contract (meaning it is not a known "Canadian Variant"). What is interesting is that it turned out to be Bio Hazard Battle which is one of the last handful of titles released by Irwin in the Canadian Variant set in the Dec92 to Mar93 window. Its one of the rarer titles in that set. Cool find!
So a rare prototype that never saw the light of day until 30 something years went by and now here it is, MVG should do a new series of prototype games of all kinds. Imagine all the unused or finished contents you can find. Also the cutting room floor should look at this video. Side note: my dumps are always clean and 100% dumped. lol.

Having grown up with this game, this is such a cool surprise. Surpised how different the charged attack animation is, i like it more than the retail version. Also, The ost is phenomenal and my favorite part about the game.
MVG is going to end up being in a history textbook as a game archeologist and having his statue erected at a video game museum at this rate. Thank you for all your contributions to gaming history.
From working at SOA in QA back in 1992, our test/prototype boards were all socketed, so each eeprom could be flashed individually. They weren't soldered in place.
Great reference to Apidya, which was also released in 1992. This under-rated gem deserves a video, I feel.

I like that he lets people know right away that it isn't Alien Storm, it might get people clicking off of it faster or disappointed sooner but I think it leaves a little bit of a mystery. Like Ok it isn't what we originally thought, but then what is it really? I also like just hearing MVG talk about his thought process and the manual process he goes through great way to learn and be brought along for the same journey he went through.
Good stuff... Let's just take a moment to overlook my absolute abject disappointment it was not Alien Storm as advertised and appreciate how awesome all this is. 5:04 you can also make sha (preferably sha-256/512) checksums of the dumps to check the consistency and whether its the correct dump
Sure, but the files are small enough that just comparing them directly isn't a big deal. The files easily fit in memory.

I like that he lets people know right away that it isn't Alien Storm, it might get people clicking off of it faster or disappointed sooner but I think it leaves a little bit of a mystery. Like Ok it isn't what we originally thought, but then what is it really? I also like just hearing MVG talk about his thought process and the manual process he goes through great way to learn and be brought along for the same journey he went through.
