Hey hey y'all! Today I'll show you how to top onions and talk about why you should do it. Plus we will use those beautiful onion tops to make homemade green onion powder.

I have been trying to grow onions for years and never knew this. So I went out today and cut the tops off my onions. Currently getting them ready for the dehydrator.

It’s so great to see onion powder made without a freeze dryer! I couldn’t believe how expensive those things were when I started researching them. There’s no way I can buy ta freeze dryer but a dehydrator is much more attainable. Thank you for sharing!
Yes! And we've had this dehydrator for 20+ years and it's still going strong. :)

good to have fresh any day of the week but at cost of having them in dryer for that long and then blend them more power for half a jar ,i think be better for you to just pop out and get couple stems when need them be even fresher and no energy cost to you , :) , you looked beautiful though in you work overalls and is not a criticism at all great idea if made a very big batch so thank you for idea in topping the onions to stop them falling over
We will still harvest and use fresh while in season and then have them dried for the fall and winter after onion bulbs are harvested. I would have paid more for organic onion flakes at the store than what my dehydrator and blender used (average 4 cents per hour). If that's a concern for someone though you can air dry and crush by hand. :) Sometimes for me too it's not necessarily about the money but instead having something I was in control of in my pantry for storage. :)

If you set your oven to it's lowest setting, and leave the door propped open it works about as well in a pinch. I do my final herb harvest for the year and a batch of jerky this way every year
Are you going to update us on the progress of the onions?
These are my onions from last year. They did really well! This year we over wintered onion sets and I waited longer to top and they didn't do as well. Next year I'll plant early spring and top them probably twice.

I've never grown onions, yet, but this was very interesting. Does the green onion powder offer a similar flavor to traditional white onion powder or is it different?
They taste very similar to me :)
