for transferring the recorded files to a computer, the usb port on the h5 is the older 2.0, so the transfer is pretty slow. I would always prefer a USB 3.0 card reader. But if you have to, just change the usb setting to "SD card reader" plug it in to the computer, and it should show up like a drive. for using the h5 to record directly to your computer (in to garage band or pro tools or any other DAW) you just set it up as we did in the video, but then change the USB setting to "audio interface" then plug in the USB, and the rest of the setup is on the computer side. Great video dude, just a question - you say that u aim for -12 for voice recording, to what levels do you push it in post when u create videos? I always raise the voice/interview as high as possible without clipping in post (-3 ish). What would you recommend? :)
It depends on where it going (eg: Netflix, youtube, theater)but for voice -6 to -3 is a good range to start for post. in general you want your sound effects to be able to go louder than voice sometimes, so you need to leave a little room, and music should usually be a little lower than voice. A common spread would be -3 for SFX, -6 for dialogue, and -9 for music, but every project has different needs.
for a normal interview, I would go with "comp vocal" it is a small amount of compression to act a a safety 'just in case' things get a bit louder than expected, and that will let you dial it in exactly as you want in post. too much compression in the zoom and you cant undo if you change your mind later. so IMO less compression on the machine is best.. unless you are dealing with sounds at vastly different loudnesses like a live concert, then you may want more.

Amazing and very detailed video!! Thank you for that. Is the H5 still able to do auto leveling like the H4n? I would never use this feature on a regular base but I'm going to film a wedding with very loud instruments and I can't operate the recorder because I've got two persons laved up as well. So I need to relay on the auto setting. Hopefully this feature has been included as well in the newer version.
Great tutorial thank you so much! I do have a question though, when recording a stereo pair on inputs 1/2 is possible to link the channels to one preamp gain dial? Its hard to balance levels with two different channel gains. Thanks!
@@faucast4948 Just as a belated followup, this is possible using the 3.5mm TRS mini jack input on the right side of the stereo mic module. Selecting the (L/R) inputs as if you were recording from the stereo mic module.
Hello sir, i have a question: if you put the mono mix on, and you record yourself playing guitar, is the recording in mono or stereo? And also: when you connected the microphone, why was the number 2 connection light also lit up?
Wow. This video is awesome. I am still going through and I am wondering why do we want to stay away from mp3? I never knew that before. I have several reasons in mind for my Zoom h5 by the way. And one of them is videos of events and online videos, but another one that is very important to me is vocals and music. And eventually, I will get to films as the bigger accomplishment, when I am better equipped. Just to throw some light on where I am coming from.
MP3 is a far more compressed format. The quality will suffer, but also your ability to edit or filter in post will suffer a lot. I often use plugins like Izotope Voice De-noise, and those plugins ability to work well will be greatly reduced with mp3. Also there have been studies done on peoples brains with mp3 vs wav, and the mp3 compression make the brain work harder so people are actually more tired after long exposer to mp3 vs wav. For a lot of short youtube things it wont mater much if the final output gets converted to mp3, but for anything "professional" you definitely want to stick with wav. But also SD cards are cheap, and sound takes very little space compared to video, so you are not really doing yourself any favors but trying to save that space..
This was amazing. Thank you. very well explained. Could you please do a video og how we could use a H5 for Live streeaming ( Use the On camera mic on H5 for the audio for the LIve feed)
Pl indicate how I can connect h5 with an external amplifier. Also connection it with a preamp like behringer xenyx1202fx may kindly be indicated. With fraternal good wishes and love
This video explains a lot and makes setting up my Zoom very easy, I thank you for that. What I want to know though is when I record, I find that some audio are missing/lost here and there. it doesn't happens a lot. When I sync the audio with my video recorder audio sometimes the audio goes out of sync just to find a few seconds are skipped/lost.What can cause the loss.
Hey there, ty for the info. I'm using a Sennheiser 600, and a bit confused about something. When I select multifile, the file record to whatever DB I allow it. When choosing Stereo file, it'll halt around -6b. While I know that's the sweet spot for most audio recording, is there a way I can remove it from limiting me to that DB?
I have a request. Please elaborate about Phantom Power. I had a mic with its own batteries and switched on Phantom Power and my H5 started malfunctioning. No one lays emphasis on this serious issue, except one video. I am a beginner and there is no video which is comprehensive. Today I was struggling to Play files. You have to think like a novice. So far a good video and I am sure you can deliver what guys like me need. I am from India.
Great stuff - i've now set up and ready for my first coposition ! My music teacher has asked me to record and send an mp3 file to him but is it possible to send it as a wav file as an attachment or must it be mp3 please ? Can't tell you how happy i am to master this recorder - i usually watch the video and then try and operate it afterwards so this time i watched, paused, set up and hey presto - all of a sudden i'm thinking what was all the fuss about ? Now i can use it without feeling intimdated by the language/terminology etc.Yipee !
Thank you. And you will have to ask your teacher about the mp3 vs wav. they may have a reason for needing MP3. but the recorder can do both, wav is just higher quality.
Thanks for this tutorial! I was wondering if you've ever come across the 'E' (error) mark coming up randomly usually in the first 30 seconds of recordings? I get it in some recordings and it ends up not recording a few seconds at the start. I don't think there's any loud noises or anything different happening at the start of recordings to cause this. When I look at the Mark List of that recording, the places where the sound is cut out has the little 'E' showing. I'm trying to figure out why it does that but no luck so far...
Thanks very much for the helpful videos on the H5. I now know my zoom H5 much better than before. I have 2 questions about my H5: one is that when I try to record on battery rather than plug-in power, the recording stops after a few minutes even though there is plenty of battery power left. Second, there is a noticeable hum on all my recordings...I'm hoping it might go away if I can record on battery power. Thanks if you can help me out!
for the short rec time on battery, make sure you are using new, name brand batteries. Cheap ones from the dollar store, or off brand rechargeable are unreliable. You should get a at least a few hours of recording from one set of batteries... Also maybe try a different SD card. i see a lot more issues with cards than batteries. as for the hum, could be many things. Wall power can cause it. Being near power lines. Levels being too low. Or just sound in the environment like air conditioning/refrigerator/computers on, or even things on in the neighboring apartment. Also if its a used unit, there could just be something broken. they are not the most robust units. Dropping a few times can cause these issues.
@@faucast4948 thanks for these ideas...I've got name brand rechargeable batteries, and it's not that the charge runs out. It's just that the recording stops itself. I'll try using a smaller SD card. I've found the hiss continues but is kess on battery power without being plugged into my laptop. I think the most likely all around is that my new recorder has gotten damaged during my travels. I really appreciate your expertise and your generosity with it!
Hey man! I am a musician and I am recording myself. I play multiple instruments at once though and am very focused on my process while I'm playing. It's going to be difficult to change the volume levels on the H5 while I'm performing, however, the volume of my sessions range from very soft to pretty loud. Any tricks, tools, or integrations that can help with automatically controlling the volume levels while I'm recording?
Depends on a lot of factors. Usually for something like that i would want multiple mics, and i would set levels with specific mics on each instrument, but also try to physically separate each interment as much as possible. You basically need to look at it as recording a whole band, even though you are the only one playing. But also this could be one instance where i might recommend upgrading to one of the newer 32bit recorders. it takes a bit more work in post to mix the files well, but if set in a decent range it will preserve all of the sound information without clipping. Then it just becomes an editing problem.
MS is mid-side recording. It is a way of using two mics very close to each other, to record one source (usually a musical instrument) and have the ability to control the stereo spread more in post than you would with a stereo mic, or 2 mics with more distance between them.
If you are running the sound out of the h5 and and recording on the a6400, and the final file on the sd card from the camera has drift over time, i can only assume it is an issue with the camera. if there are other devices involved like an hdmi encoder going in to a computer there could be a lot of other issues. one test you could do would be to plug a mic directly in to the camera and test if the sound still drifts over time. But either way the only real fix i can suggest would be to try updating the firmware on all of the devices involved. now if you are recording separately on the h5 and a6400 and downloading both cards to a computer and syncing in post, there may be drift over long takes (around 30 min or more.) And this is just a function of using inexpensive consumer gear. Neither devices have true crystal syncing time code so that is just the downside of not spending tens of thousands of dollars on gear. the only fixes there would be to bump the sound a few frames every once in a while on your editing program, and just line it up by eye, or cut the camera and sound more frequently (maybe every 20 min or so) so they realign with each take.
Thank you for replying. I am plugging the H5 directly into the camera. The camera is recording at 25p 100m and the h5 is on wav48khz 24bit. I will try stopping the recording frequently. I was letting it roll to make editing easier but obviously the drift does not help! I actually found there was no drift when they were not connected.
Hi thanks for the tutorial. Can you please tell me why xlr port 1 is not working, I don’t hear sound when the microphone is plugged in. However the same shotgun mic transmit sound in xlr port 2
Double check the phantom power setting, and also the CH1 button on the front has the red LED light on.. oh also check that the level knob is not all the way down.. these are all things i have seen people overlook. if you followed all the other settings though it could be broken.. seen that a lot too, as they tend to get abused.
This was so useful. Thanks! One question though. For the L/R Backup, have I misunderstood? You said it gives two files, one -12db, but I can only find one file on the SD card?
Sorry i just double checked this, and apparently this option only works with the top mic modules(L&R) , and not the xlr inputs (ch1&ch2) like i said in the video. I guess i confused this option with the tascam version that does offer the feature on the XLR input.
I just want to add my 2c, there's no point IMO in recording above 48 khz as the builtin mics (and most of the ones you plug in) record no frequency information above 20 Khz. The Nyquist theorem states you only need double the sampling Khz compared to the frequency response Khz. This means 40 Khz would even do, 48 Khz itself is overkill.
The Nyquist theorem is a calculation of minimum threshold, not the ideal threshold. The higher the sample rate, the more closely the digital signal approximates an analog signal. With voice recording this is not as much of an issue, but in music recording it can produce a fuller more complete representation of the various sounds at higher sample rates, especially if you are trying to record something like a full symphony in to one source. Your brain will do a lot of the heavy lifting to smooth out the sounds at lower bit rates, but this can lead to the listener actually feeling more tired after listening to long sessions at lower bit rates. This is one of the reasons we avoid using MP3 as well. But also what if i am recording music for dogs...
@@lundsweden Well if you know you are only reproducing sine waves, 2 samples per oscillation is enough to make the math work, but we are not capturing sine wave, and thats not how the decoders interpret the info. the image here illustrates the concept of the nuance lost at sticking with the minimum. The more samples you have, the closer to the original analog you will get. media.geeksforgeeks.org/wp-content/uploads/20240223131125/image-248.webp
@@faucast4948 Anything more complex than a sine wave with a fundamental at 20 khz would have harmonics over 20 khz... which we can't hear. That diagram is nonsense, most adults can't hear much over 15 khz, let alone 20 khz. Maybe if you're 15 years old you can hear a 20 khz sine wave, by 40 you'd be lucky to hear over 12 khz.
Can I use compressor and limiter at the same time or not? Cause I can see only one of these indicators on the screen. Not both. An second question is why when Im using zoom as an audio interface and talk to someone via discord, ppl say that I sound way better when I set it to multitrack. There mus be no difference to a sound quality I presume. Thanx
Basically you can think of the compressor and limiter on this are the same feature or plugin on this, just with different settings depending on which you pick. selecting limiter is one preset, and compressor would be a different preset on the same plugin. for the discord thing, the only thing i can think of is it may be using whatever mic you have plugged in, mixd with the built in top mics gong to the other 2 channels.. I would think that would make it sound worse though, but there are a lot of variables there, so its hard to say.
@@faucast4948I have only 1 xlr plugged. My though is the you have to turn 2nd xlr Chanel to 0 even if there is no mic plugged in, csuse in stereo mod it picks both channels regardless. And in multitrsck it picks separetly.
I have used the Zoom H5 for years. But can you tell me what this extra file is that you get additionally on every sound file of a single record? Is it useful for something or can I straight delete it?
You really never "Need" to use low cut on the recorder, unless maybe it is going out live. Otherwise (IMO) it is much better to do in your post software, if low cut is needed at all. Its not always needed though. If someone has a really low voice, low cut might be hurting the bottom end of the sound.
How do I record a guitar solo without having to listen to the whole song every time I make a mistake on the solo ? As in how, how can I jump to a certain point & record. Cheers
I don't use it for music recording, so i am not totally sure, but i don't believe there is an easy way to do that. You may want to upgrade to a computer based DAW if that is something you are doing a lot of. You can use the H5 as an interface and record in to garage band or protools or whatever you are comfortable with, and then have all the control in the world over those aspects.
Hav you tried both usb settings "sd card reader" and "audio interface"? have you tried plugging it in to other computers? they always just pop up as a drive or interface for me, but i mainly use mac, so i cant help much with windows.

@@faucast4948 Thank you. I am really happy you explained that. You have taught me something valuable.
This was amazing. Thank you. very well explained. Could you please do a video og how we could use a H5 for Live streeaming ( Use the On camera mic on H5 for the audio for the LIve feed)
Great suggestion! i will put that on my list.
Much gracias, gran ayuda!!! :)

@@faucast4948 Probably the file size i reckon ? Couldn't believe how much difference it made to being able to use ut after watching your video.Thanks.
I have not seen this, possibly a card error
Great job. Thank you very much. The zoom H5 manual is referring to MS signals. What is an MS signal ? Thank you very much.
MS is mid-side recording. It is a way of using two mics very close to each other, to record one source (usually a musical instrument) and have the ability to control the stereo spread more in post than you would with a stereo mic, or 2 mics with more distance between them.
@@faucast4948 Thank you very much
One query, if u can explain plz,: do contact mics require phantom power; I just bought one H5.
not usually but there are a lot of different types. you will need to look up your specific mic.
can we use zoom h5 for Facebook live? will he be affected by audio interference??
I have never tried, but i don't see it being a problem.
Hello! Great video. I have input this to my Sony A6400 but it’s out of sync and increases over time. Is this a bitrate issue? What can I do?
I actually found there was no drift when they were not connected.
great
Hi thanks for the tutorial.
@@faucast4948 Thank you . Your explanation fixed my issue.
This was so useful. Thanks! One question though. For the L/R Backup, have I misunderstood? You said it gives two files, one -12db, but I can only find one file on the SD card?
1 file, 2 tracks. ch 1 should be Left and ch 2 should be on Right
Sorry i just double checked this, and apparently this option only works with the top mic modules(L&R) , and not the xlr inputs (ch1&ch2) like i said in the video.
I guess i confused this option with the tascam version that does offer the feature on the XLR input.
So can I use this to reord an audio book? It's basically a mixer, right?
sure, i dont see why not,
I just want to add my 2c, there's no point IMO in recording above 48 khz as the builtin mics (and most of the ones you plug in) record no frequency information above 20 Khz.
@@faucast4948 Untrue, a 40,000 khz sampling rate can reproduce a sine wave at 20,000 khz perfectly.
I assume you are talking about the .hprj file and that is just saved settings for the H5. no need to keep them.
@@faucast4948 thanks alot :D
That have been a long mystery.
Question. If I'm recording in a totally quiet room, do I really need to use the Lo Cut feature at all? I want to get the maximum quality, if possible.
You really never "Need" to use low cut on the recorder, unless maybe it is going out live. Otherwise (IMO) it is much better to do in your post software, if low cut is needed at all. Its not always needed though. If someone has a really low voice, low cut might be hurting the bottom end of the sound.

Thanks!
i just bought the h5 yesterday,i want to record without baterry is it safe to use an 5 volt 2 ampere phone charger?
If its not the Zoom branded power supply, i would go with usb power to a usb wall adapter. Yours might work, but the usb definitely wont over power.
@@faucast4948 thanks very much man
Zoom H5 not recognised by my windows 7 PC,: any suggestion plz😇?
Hav you tried both usb settings "sd card reader" and "audio interface"? have you tried plugging it in to other computers?
they always just pop up as a drive or interface for me, but i mainly use mac, so i cant help much with windows.
@@faucast4948 : not yet, I ll try that again, but no response from zoom co/ agency in Mumbai for driver issues if any.

Thanx bro 🙏🙏
Why are the zoom devices, the screen protection manufacturing quality is so bad, and if you clean it, it will scratch easily I really hated it
I assume its just cost. Theses are pretty much the least expensive machines with these features. They are definitely not considered "Pro gear."
