I thought I was a solid swimmer. However, after "water week" in OSUT, I realized just how garbage I was. This dawned on me while I drowned for 5 minutes straight for the treading portion of the test

I had a buddy that was attending the PJ pipeline. He could run 1.5 miles in 8:50 mins. He could max the push ups, pull ups, and sit ups. He was the fittest guy I knew. But he dropped from the pipeline. The insane amount of reps for the “crossover” portion of the water confidence got to him.

I could not swim . Started going to indoor base gym and started with floating in 4 ft side and slowy moved into deeper water. Eventually asking strangers and a navy seal technique video I was combat swimming across pool. I eventually was not scared and got to diving in deepest 14 feet end to bottom. Because during Green Beret pre selection they ask us to dive down and take a brick weight and tread water with brick above. Head long as we could

The swims were everything. If you want to pass assessment and selection become phenomenal at OCP underwaters. Perfect buddy-breathing. You must use the egg-beater kick and the frog-kick. Nail these and you will be in strong shape to pass. Strong. Legs. WIN.

How many miles a week should we be running before adding swimming in our program? Should we have a little bit of an aerobic base before we add swimming on top of the other stuff we do(lifting, sometimes rucking, calisthenics, running) or we can add swimming in our program off the jump?

    • @SOFPrepCoach

No, start swimming ASAP. The longer you wait the longer it will be before you learn the technique and are proficient

Wdym? He has titled videos like "How to Improve Rucking (SF, SEAL, PJ, MARSOC)". He acknowledged that his videos will work for marsoc candidates within the tiles and descriptions of some videos. This swimming video, rucking videos & weightlifting videos can all apply to MARSOC, it's not much different.

I can’t tread water no matter what. So the idea of treading with weight is horrifying. All the other stuff isn’t necessarily easy but doable

It's messed up but my swim coach used to say, "If a dead body can float,so can you". The secret is to get relaxed.
Eggbeater is one way of treading water but if you watch aquatic mammals like seals they don't do that. They do slow back and forth fin flips when they're vertical. Do the same with your feet while keeping your arms bent "chicken wing style" but relaxed. You should automatically just bob like a seal.
Stay relaxed and your body's natural buoyancy will keep you afloat.

What's your body fat percentage? If you BF% is too low, you'll struggle with staying above water. Best to have at least 12%.
