My grandmother recently "came out" as "more" native than she told us we were. She told us her mother was half. It was not until now that she felt comfortable admitting her heritage. It was a weird feeling as a grandchild being told you're actually closer to your native roots then you were told to believe. When I was a kid I was proud to say I was a 8th native but was always told, no no no, you're an 16th so it doesn't count. I never understood why I would want to hide that. It's sad but I'm proud of my GG for being true to who she is even if it took her 81 years.
