    Nice setup! I added the blue snubber to attach the ball. Might be a good idea incase you get snagged on the bottom. I mounted my downrigger to a custom bracket that slides in my boonedox landing gear and can run a electric motor on the other side if i want. It kind of evens it out too with weight distribution. Just came across your channel 👍any issues with running the pdl in saltwater?

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! We'll be adding some snubbers as well, mostly because it's easier on the hands than trying to grab the line or close to the cannonball, those ball clips are sharp! Weight distribution is a little bit of an issue for us which were working on, with the bigger downrigger plus trolling with 8lb balls you definitely feel the difference! Zero issues running the pdl drive in the Salt, but we wash our kayaks, along with the drives and all our gear after every trip, a bit of a pain but protects our investment! Thanks for watching! 🙌

      Thank you! We're always down for fishing with new people! We both run the same setup for rod holders and placement, we like having the rod in front of us so we can see when a fish hits, th-cam.com/video/FiOz6LXVLro/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9DoaULT4kAlNYXxJ
      This video explains the setup a bit better (skip to 15:40 for the rod holder) we'll be doing a full video soon on our Salmon trolling setup now that we both have our upgraded downriggers finished.

    Nice clean install. I can relate to the pain involved in getting the backing plate installed. I have a Scotty 1060 behind my seat on my old town AP 120. Not fun but definitely worth it. I use a 6lb ball with braided line. There is still some significant blow back when you start to get down beyond 70 feet. I’ve been playing with the idea of trying an 8lb ball.

    • @kckayakfishing

      Thanks! Our plan for this season is 8lb cannonballs, we used 5 and 6lb on the lake trollers so it should be fine, also thinking of trying a pancake style ball or fish shaped should help out with the drag, thanks for watching! 🙌

    FYI. That is the Scotty 1050 not the 1060. The 1060 has a bigger diameter spool and the crank handle has a red button to extend it . Nevermind I heard u call it a 1050 5 min on on your video. In the begging u called it a 1060....lol. carry on

      Oh no! That sucks! The v lock is the only way to go for mounting downriggers in our opinion, super solid as well as convenient, and a pretty easy install depending on where you put it, thanks for watching! 🙌

    Hi Guys, what is your opinion on Scotty vs Cannon downriggers, vertical vs horizontal handles, which one you think is easier to retrieve 6 or 8 lb weight from the depth. I much appreciate your opinion on this, thank you in advance.

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @sergeychebotarev103 There's absolutely nothing wrong with Scotty Products we have and love a bunch of their gear. With that being said, for kayak fishing, we do prefer the Cannon style of downrigger. The bigger sizes of the Cannon downrigger, being vertical, get taller, not wider. Taking up the same amount of real estate on the kayak as the smaller downriggers. Where as the Scotty gets wider, so if you want a 2:1 ratio to be able to bring in the ball faster, it's going to take up more room on the kayak as the spool gets wider.
      Cannon also offers a 1.5:1 version of their downrigger, which is what we have, bringing the ball up a little bit quicker, but every little bit helps!
      One of the best things the Cannon has going for it is the handle, one handed operation is a huge plus, and you don't have to worry about the handle spinning around while lowering your cannonball, it's a wrist breaker! (Ask Crystal how she knows! 😆) also we've noticed that the Cannon downrigger has the ability to lower the ball slower depending how how far you push the handle, where the Scotty seems to be either on or off for the clutch with no slower descent speed. There's a few other better things about the Cannon downriggers, we're actually making a video to compare them both which should help show alot of what I'm trying to explain.
      Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

    • @sergeychebotarev103
      @sergeychebotarev103 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much Kyle for prompt reply. It does help a lot. I would like to have uni troll 5 but the price says to hold on. You didn't find the horizontal handle more convenient to retrieve the weight and i didnt think of handle hitting the hand....haha....so your experience of both models is super helpful. Big thank you. I will wait for your video....

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @sergeychebotarev103 honestly I think positioning of the downrigger really determines how easy it will be to crank on, I think for downriggers mounted behind the seat like ours the Cannons are by far the easiest and most comfortable to reel in. But if the downrigger is mounted in front of the seat then I think the Scotty takes that one, as well the Cannon has the handle mounted on the right side of the downrigger with no way to switch sides. Just something else to keep in mind, and we'll definitely make sure we show all of that in the video!

    • @sergeychebotarev103
      @sergeychebotarev103 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kckayakfishing Solid points! Mine is installed behind the seat (like yours) on the right side and I have to reach over to crank it. It is still pretty good but after hours of cranking I get tired, trying to rush.....and that's how I lost my cable with all the terminals and weight. LOL. Lesson learned hard way. Thanks again for your thoughts; great info!

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @sergeychebotarev103 ya it's definitely a work out after a few hours of fishing, with the Cannon were looking into possibly adding an electric drill to help bring the balls up.

      @@kckayakfishing I sank my expensive rod and reel in 850ft while trying to untangle the line from the tip of the rod, luckily the line got stuck to my anchor carabiner and I caught it, but had to hand retrieve 400 yards of line to get my rod back 😮‍💨😵‍💫 my whole kayak looked like a camouflaged barge from all of that lines I pulled out 🤣😂🤣
      Anyways, thank you for the video, I switched to an electric downrigger but the boom is too long, so I just got a used 30" boom from Craigslist and I'm trying to figure out how much of it I should cut off to fit my Hobie PA14 kayak. Your video inspired me to make a video of my setup 😊🎣🎣🎣

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @MyExRebirth if it's a scotty, the swivel base really helps bring the line close to the kayak when you want, then just swivel it out when you start trolling, it's a bit heavy but works great. We'll be looking at going to electric this off season, most of our fishing this year was well over 100' down, that's to much hand cranking for us! Also we've wrapped way to many fish around the rigger cables so the manuals will be getting switched out, definitely film it and send us the link! We'll be needing some ideas for electric setups!

    Hi love the videos, I have a oldtown 120 ap and have had to change up fishing tactics and gear since salmon season has been closed for the 2nd year .. im interested in all the parts you have used for a scottys 1050 downrigger. Also do you have a recommended location to install on 120 ap..

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!
      So obviously Crystal uses the Scotty 1050, we cut the boom down 8 inches to make it easier for her to reach, we also added the scotty 1" cannonball hook, makes storing the cannonballs so much easier. We have it on the scotty swivel base, and the whole thing is attached to a V Lock mounting system, with vlock backing plate, 3" bolts and vlock wedge to get the downrigger sitting as close to level as possible. All thr parts were purchased from Vlocks website.
      At the time this video was filmed Crystal forced me to put the downrigger in front of the seat, and it's now behind the seat in the tank well area! 😂😂
      You would think having it in front would be easier to operate, but for us it's the opposite, since the old town seats are already in a reclined position reaching behind is so much easier than trying to sit forward and reach the downrigger.
      We'd highly recommend behind the seat on any kayak, it's nice and out of the way when not in use, easy to reach, and also keeps thr gear track area clear on one side for re entry in case we go for a swim.
      We definitely wouldn't run it without a backing plate of some sort, we use 8lb cannonballs and the downrigger is fairly heavy especially with the swivel base. So wherever you decide to install it make sure there's access to the inside of the hull and can get your whole arm in there. It's a nightmare to try and do otherwise!
      Thanks for watching! Any other questions don't hesitate to ask, we'll be doing a video soon on her updated position as well as a Scotty vs Cannon downrigger video which should be lots of fun! 🙌

    Great video and very helpful for me to watch as I plan to tackle the install! Q on the V-lock parts for you : what size bolts did you order and did you need to get the XL insert or is that standard size w a 6” plate? TIA!

    • @kckayakfishing
      @kckayakfishing  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @leec4656 thank you! We used the 6"x6" insert standard length not the xl longer insert. We used the 3" bolts to be able to go through the Vlock mount, wedge, and backing plate, you may be able to get away with 2 1/2" if not using the vlock wedge to level out the mount. One of the hardest parts about the install was notching out the backing plate, since we had it under the gear track, the screws and plastic inside the hull get in the way, so had to cut out a bit of the backing plate so it would line up with the bolt holes for the mount drilled in the hull. Crystal has since decided that I was right all along and we have moved her downrigger and VLock system behind her seat in the tankwell area. She thought she would hate it but now says she likes it there more than in front of the seat. Easier to reach with the reclined position of the old town seats vs leaning forward.
      Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

      @@kckayakfishing That is super helpful! Crystal said in the video that the install was a pain and so I already had the dreads about it because I thought I wanted to put mine in the same exact spot. Now I’ve got real doubts after reading your comment that she ended up behind the seat in the end. I have a OT 120PDL and do tend to keep the seat more upright for better back comfort. It just doesn’t seem like it would be very convenient to crank the arm and read the counter behind me but this will be my first downrigger and I got the 1050. Will continue to mull it over while I wait for mounting parts to arrive in the mail…Thanks again!

    You guys are awesome and an inspiration to pursue a passion for adventure!!! Watching your adventures fishing for Cod and Salmon made me laugh out loud. I was however curious why when you hook up on big Salmon, you guys do not use a lightweight fighting belt to seat the butt of your rods in to give you extra leverage and control when landing the fish? I am new to Kayak fishing and found a great deal on an Old Town Bog Water.

      Thanks so much! Appreciate the support! We've never tried a belt mostly due to the way that we fight the Salmon, we keep the fish behind us for as long as possible which might make fighting the fish more difficult than easier as we aren't facing the fish it might be hard to get the butt into the belt, it could possibly help in landing the fish like you said, might be a good video idea! Not 100% sure for spinning reels, I guess if the butt section of the rod was long enough it should work, it will work with mooching reels, the reel will facing up and you'll just have to spin when you pull it out. It's an extremely solid rod holder, great construction. 👍 we will be running an 8 lb cannonball this season on the 1050
