You're a real one, never forget it. Metallica is more than a band, its a community, its a family. You are my brother, like I am yours, like we are to the other Metallicabreath people around the world.
I got a pick from James in 1992 at Arrowhead stadium in Kansas City. It was the Guns N Roses / Metallica tour. It was August and 103 degrees that day and we were DYING from the heat/sweat! 🥵 I was 20 and was front row center, in the pit against the rail ALL DAY. He didn’t play guitar the whole concert as he had been injured (from the explosion as stated in the video) and he had bandages on his arms. Well they left the stage and we all knew they were gonna do an encore cause they didn’t play “Enter Sandman” which was #1 on Rock radio at the time. So the whole stadium (70,000 fans) started stomping and chanting “Sandman! Sandman! Sandman!”… and out comes the band playing Sandman with James playing guitar for the first time in a month!! The crowd went crazy! When they finished they said goodnight and Lars came out and started throwing his drum sticks and James had like 10 green picks on the neck of his guitar and he started throwing them into the crowd. All I wanted was to get one to take home to my younger brother who was only 16 and my dad wouldn’t let him go. I put my hands together in a prayer 🙏 stance and made eye contact with James and begged please!!?? He leaned down and handed it to his security (a guy who had helped me throughout the concert cause I was 100lbs and these big guys kept pushing up against me and crushing me against the rail). Once the security guy got it in his hand he turned to give it to me and one of those big guys leaned over me crushing me AGAIN into the rail, this time breaking my 2nd rib. (I had a hairline fracture). He was able to snatch the pick out of his hand!! I screamed out in pain and felt vomit coming up cause the pain was so bad. I told security “I think that guy just broke my rib!” By the time they could look for him he had split. I was crying cause he stole MY PICK! Security took me over the rail to get medical attention and James saw all of this and leaned down to talk to the security guard..then he reached in his pocket and pulled out an all black pick with METALLICA written on it in gold lettering! I put it in my pocket so fast cause I knew this one was special and said “This is for my little brother who couldn’t be here, thank you!!” I met up with my friends and they took me to the ER which X-rays showed it WAS a broken rib. I had a hell of a story to tell my brother when I got home back in St Louis. This is honestly one of the best experiences of my life. That whole day was. My brother was so happy! He took the pick to have it looked at because he thought the gold lettering was real gold. Well… it WAS! In fact the guy who looked at it offered my brother $50 for it on the spot! 😮 In 1992 that was a lot of money to a 16 yr old kid! He said “I can’t.. my sister went thru a lot to get this for me.. she would KILL ME!” lol He has it framed to this day in his office and 3 weeks ago I flew back home to St Louis to finally take my brother to see Metallica for his 48th birthday.. BOTH NIGHTS, and it was AMAZING! ❤
Great story, hon. It's appalling that some big goon basically assaulted you and stole from you! What an asshole! Hopefully karma bit him hard later on.
In recent years James has let down that steel curtain that he hid behind for so much of Metallica's career. It's nice to see that human, vulnerable side of him come out
But that's personal to him and why would you care isn't the music enough?? Growing up we didn't give two shits about the band members personality or personal lives because it's got nothing to do with the music, nowadays people want to know what time he takes a shit or what he had for breakfast WHY DO YOU CARE who gives a fuck as long as the musics loud
I owe to Metallica and especially James so much. They're music got mu through so much shit I was facing. And thanks to James I started to play the guitar when I was 10 year old. Nowadays when I have a bad day, good day, feel depressed or happy I play some Metallica and the worst of it is gone, or I feel even more happy. I've seen them 6 times and will continue to do so every time they visit! Thank you for everything, Papa Het, see you soon! 🤘🏻
Metallica is the reason I started learning to play the guitar in 1999 during my senior year of high school. I started on Bass because a former friend suggested it (the truth is that he had a massive ego about being the sole guitarist), but I felt a stronger connection to James's rhythm style. I changed up to guitar and had a huge falling out with my friend. I've never had a lesson in my life (which I regret, but I didn't think my parents would go along with it), and taught myself to play. "So What?" was my practice routine for mastering the art of blinding fast down-picking.

That last part where Robert was hugging James brought tears to my eyes. 😢. I know what he means when he says he doesn't even know if he is content in life. I dont know where I belong or how to find happiness. Its weird. I hope James and the members of MetallicA really know how much they have meant and done for the true fan's. At the end of the day, we really do love them
That was such a real and raw moment. Yeah Metallica has gotten more in touch emotionally in their wiser years, even going back 20 years during the awkward and rough "Monster" era, but they're a sort of macho metal band not known for a lot of banter between songs, especially nothing so vulnerable. They run a pretty tight, well organized live show. For Hetfield to do that during a gig, you know there was real heaviness going on. It's hard not to feel moved when watching it.

Fact. JH does not "hate" the music on the Load/ReLoad records. He has been on the record saying when performing "Bleeding Me" and "The Outlaw Torn", he must apologize to the fans, because he's so into those two songs, he forgets about everything else around him. Read them lyrics. Also, "Fuel" and "The Memory Remains" are two of some of Het's favorite Met songs to play live. Still waiting for "Where The Wild Things Are", boys!
Said this as soon as I saw that one. There may have been aspects of Load and ReLoad that Hetfield didn't care for, like the pictures and the cover art, just the general attitude, but he wrote the goddamned music. Sure, there may be a few specific songs that he sees as filler, but i think overall, he's fine with the musical content of those albums. And yeah, "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Fixxxer" are the two best tracks on ReLoad. "Bleeding Me" and "Outlaw Torn" for Load.
Damn. If this man can feel alone, the rest of us have no chance at avoiding it. Man's a real G. And as others said, him/Metallica are the reason many of us pick up the guitar. We all have that Metallica energy in our rooms when we're learning/playing their songs.
James, you'll never be happy with what you don't have or can't have or even what you do have. You can only be happy with who you are and what you are. That's what 272 Seasons have taught me, HA!
James and his band saved me. I don’t know how but they did. fade to black came on my playlist as soon as I was about to commit. Listened in and I realized.. “hey wait. I may be 11 but I still tried to do this and they saved me. I don’t know how because I didn’t add it. it just came on. I still thank Metallica to this day. I can’t go to the concerts since I’m eleven but I could rant on and on how they saved me. love them so much now.
The Load stuff is misleading. James likes the songs. He didn't care for the image. Bleeding Me and Mama Said are some of James' favorite songs. And as everyone else has said....That thumbnail! My goodness! 💀
I never understood why Load and Reload got so much hate. I get it because they were different from what was expected of them. But dang…. Some of my favorite songs by them are on those albums 🤷♂️
Because they went from thrash greatness to radio rock, that's why............... And the had mentioned in the past, they would never sell out their thrash fans.

I went to see their performance back in the early 90s in my country when they're world touring with my uncles. I was still in the 4th grade in elementary school back then. In '95, I got my hand on the first guitar in the 2nd grade of junior high, and there was Enter Sandman in me. Eventually, I became a bass player by accident because the rest of people wants to become guitarists. During my high school days ('97-2000), I became the one man bassist for lots of bands in my school itself while also having a band of my own outside. I kept on playing bass and earning money from music until 2005, and I completely left the band in 2008. But music is still in me, and so is Metallica. I'd still been jamming with the boys until now. Our spirit is young, but our fingers are accustomed to laptop keyboards now. 1:00 that's what I think a lot of people underappreciate about these vocalists. It's actually insane what some of these singers are asking of their voices, being able to perform an entire set, often without even 1 day of rest (while on tour), etc. The guy from Jet, Scorpions, even Adele, as well as countless others I've read about have had vocal issues. It's something a lot of fans don't even consider or think about because we're so used to what we listen to, but I think these singers deserve a lot more recognition specifically for their abilities and how mindful they must be with their instrument.
I don't care what people or the band say. Load is an awesome album and the art work on it is great. There's not one bad track on it. There are some belters on it. I will always love that album.
I'm so glad I was there, crawling on the fence, and could see the last one in person. The public reception to this moment was amazing and it is the kind of experience that changes how you see celebrities, with more respect and in a more humane way. People see and love them as they love brands and products and this is the kind of experience that changes that.
I don’t know about number 6 for the Dave Mustaine part lmao he himself had admitted that he did always have an attitude problem and specially while drunk which was the reason why they kicked him out and he himself had said so 😂
Nah… it was the punch to the face. Dave was like, the drunk reason never made sense since the band was drinking a lot at the time. Plus, Dave was better then and is now. James couldn’t deal with it.
It's so stupid how some people can be so critical of hair like not letting James on the football team with longer hair, but I guess it was a blessing in disguise, since he is now apart of one of the biggest metal bands ever, if not the biggest. If I had a "treatable" form of cancer but the only way to solve it was chemo, I'd rather die. I'm not going to suffer even more. I believe doctors have good intentions and they have done good for the world for the most part, but I do NOT want any involvement with the pharmaceutical industry or any toxic cancer treatment if I ever had it. Wtf? Teachers slapping hands to correct ways of holding a pencil? Who the hell did they think they were? There's no one way to hold it. What right does band management have of banning James from doing something? It's his and the other band members' band.
Teachers slapping hands/rapping knuckles was what they did back in the day and God help anyone who was left handed. They'd try all sorts of things to make you right handed. And band management have every right to ban a musician from undertaking what can be viewed as a dangerous activity. It's quite common. Bands will be under contract to play shows/tours and it can cause all sorts of problems if they have to cancel. Plus that accident could have ended James ability to play guitar. Luckily it didn't.

It's interesting you should say that, because if you go and listen to any of their really old shows, like from "Ride the Lightning" era, his vocal style live is pretty much similar to how he does it now. So I really think a lot of it is just extra takes in the studio/how the producer gets things to sound being responsible for a lot of the change you're hearing.

Such time after time pure honesty. This band has always been so genuine and in my opinion sound even better performing than on records (iTunes 🙄). They will hopefully go down in history as the greatest rock band ever with staying power. Rock on, rock out!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I always thought James' vocals on the first few albums sounded equally high as the rest of the band. Meaning something in the recording phase caused the whole band's sound to become higher pitched to the listener. Playing guitar and learning to those early albums always left me checking my tuning because they were always sharper than my standard tuning, which they were recorded to for the most part. Ever so slightly higher than what my tuners produced. Eventually I began to think they sounded high pitched because they were recorded slower. Record at normal pitch and increase playback till just before sounding like the chipmunks on speed. Thrash needed to be faster than the next and this would help add a few bpm. Who knows. He was old enough to sound fuller recording the first albums. I don't hear this phenomena with other albums of the time that I frequent. Something doesn't give.

I agree. It’s good to see someone who got ‘bigger than life’ staying down to earth and being honest and real with the fans.
I thought James’ singing voice on the first three albums was great

I totally agree! I genuinely love James and crew and hope they remain content and happy as they grow older.
I guess money can't buy you happiness?
But it's damned close!
@@D-Fens_1632 Well he did recently go through the divorce, I guess that his ex-wife will keep that $30 million dollar house and property!!! The kids got to live there so.

The Outlaw Torn Is Probably one the most underrated song Metallica ever Recorded

Singing is the most important and most difficult.

Sounds like you just need a good tuner. I never had any problems. Stop looking for conspiracy where there is none.
@@metalboy5150 Dang, I guess that really was it all along. Thanks. I just found out about a tuner 30 years after starting this journey. What's next? A better way to place and manage pedals? Like a board or something...
Although they're really excellent at what they do, and I have big respect for them, I'm not much of a fan of the music. But I do love these guys. Good people. 👍👍
