The problem is that Robert Preston totally defined that role. He is that guy. Nobody else is even close. I've rarely seen a role that was so defined by one person that it's absolutely pointless to even try to remake it.
I was just saying that to me please thanks for telling me that I have to go to the bathroom and get my hair done earlier and I can go to the store 😔 I am trying calling me and I can go to the store and get it tomorrow and then go back to work tomorrow if you can get a chance to the store for me to get it tomorrow and I would like to go to the store Robbie Hagberg
I can't decide which is better. I have seen both multiple times and there are things that I think each did better than each other but I still love both
You're right! I was introduced to this version first, then watched the original on my own a few years later. I can understand being a purist and wanting to preserve something as dynamic as the inimitable performance of Robert Preston, but for me, I just enjoy this one sooo much more. The supporting cast, the costumes, choreography, and tempo of the remake buoy up Matthew Broderick, as opposed to one performer carrying the entire show in the original. Shirley Jones was also very good, but I just enjoy Kristin's singing sooo much more. One thing about the original that feels less than the remake is the casting of Buddy Hackett as Marcellus; I always felt like that guy was supposed to be a right-hand man, a lieutenant of sorts; kinda like Will Scarlett to Robin Hood. The Marce in the remake fit that role much better. The original is still the superior film, when taken based solely on the merit of the title character, however, I own the dvd of this version and can honestly say that I made the better choice for myself. I say see both versions and decide for yourself which one does it better for you. Robert Preston is THE MAN, but it's the remake all the way for me as the more satisfying film. Thanks for posting!
I'm glad they did the song uncut (unlike the Preston version) but bringing in the orchestra halfway through ruins the effect. The WHOLE POINT of the number is to make music out of idle chatter. It's like the director didn't trust the material.
When I first watched this with my chorus I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole train ride. That is truley amazing. I wonder how many takes that must of took.
@@Yannis1a You're right, too many cuts to the bottom of "Harold Hill's" face. We're not supposed to figure out that he's on the train until the end. It's a distraction.
This is one of the best things I have ever seen in my life, not the remake (I like the original better) but this opening scene. Some scenes in this remake I feel are better executed than in the original and this is one of them.
This movie is UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC! Matthew Broderick is amazing, his facial expressions keep me glued to the screen. His dancing and moves have my daughters out of their seats getting down every time! Definatley an instant classic in our house. Thanks for uploading it, we've been searching a couple years for this flick!
Personally I found the extra verses they added to Rock Island to be very tired and overall detrimental to the natural energy of the song. Plus having the same salesman that adds the "no it ain't but he doesn't know the territory." contribute a verse sends a mixed message that is entirely unnecessary (does that character think things have changed for salesmen like the rest or not?). However, the way the salesmen race after Hill once they realize he's the source of their recent miseries only to have him smirk and tip his hat to them at the platform? Wonderful addition.
@@marlzach I thought there was something missing when I last watched this scene from the original. I could've sworn I had more "wheredyagetit"s in my high school production.

I feel like the fellow from the older movie had a stronger voice for the role, kind of the same for some of the others too, not as booming of voices as some of the older fellows. Though might just also be bias having seen that one first long ago and even recently when I watched it again.
Hit Now Hey hey! no need for that. I posted this before I got to know the music of Hamilton. I take it back. Although this is cool, it doesn't beat Hamilton.
Flint 25 woah be careful A bunch of angered Hamilton fans are gonna come at you now #newsflash you can like whoever you want, there’s no right or wrong answer as to who’s better
Over on one of the original ones (from 1962), somebody commented that this song sets the tone for the entire movie. I've not seen the Broderick version, but a minute and a half into this clip, I can see I haven't missed anything.
This version's better, that version's better, know what? My school did this play, and I think it's my favorite version! However, no one recorded that, so this will work just as well. =) Thanks for posting it CA!
GUYS, stop knocking this version. The original movie will NEVER leave our memories, but both versions are out and there will be more to come. LEAVE IT ALONE. Do you think the producers read these? THEY DON'T, SO DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
It's really annoying that people keep putting down Matthew Broderick. I have seen bits of the original Robert Preston version, and I personally think that they both did a great job! :D It's not like the role of the Harold Hill is supposed to have this amazing voice. He's just supposed to have a decent voice. Robert Preston said that he had a limited range, in fact.
the first time i heard this was actually from a CD i checked out at the library one time, i realized it was different from the one i use to see, and when i first saw this i noticed that it was (don't hate me for this) a lot more fun ^^
I grew up with the Robert Preston version, and he was the original Harold Hill on Broadway. Nobody else can fill his shoes in this role, in my opinion.
"He sells clarinets to the kids"
Never had one lesson...
“Incredible. One of the worst performances of my career and I never doubted it for a second.”
I love how the yes sir part matches up with the train moving, that was always my favorite part
One of the main points of this entire song was the fact that what they were saying went along with the sounds and movements of the train.
Yeah I noticed that, I just think that the yes sir part is the coolest. Thanks for telling me though!
@@echadwick3916 nice rhythm.😊

Ray Banger It’s true. He owned that role both on Broadway and in the original movie.
Just watched this version for the first time. Preston had more charisma than the entire cast here combined.

Matthew Broderick Can’t Act. He is a dead body
3:17 - that closeup on Hill's smug smile is actually an improvement over how they filmed the Preston version.

Copy that many times over.
George Strum Don't be sorry if you're honest.

Try listening to each with your eyes closed. In the 62 movie you can clearly hear each character. In this one, I don't think that you can.
I disagree
A really excellent remake, which is unusual!
Seth Tyrssen I
The original opening scene is far more rhythmic and more effective.
Additional music during the excellent vocals seems too much and just... overkill for such a great musical number
I disagree.
