Suffer the Little Children Podcast - Episode 65: Lucas Call

  • In 2017, Lucas Call and his baby sister were removed from their biological mother’s custody, in part because she had a learning disability and was unjustly deemed an unfit mother. They were placed in the care of a woman who had previously fostered upwards of 40 children. She was also a trained nurse who worked with the county government’s child abuse investigation team. Sixteen months later, in August of 2018, that woman called 911, reporting 2-year-old Lucas was unresponsive.
After Lucas’s death was deemed a homicide caused by blunt force trauma, his foster mother, Lisa Jo Vanderlinden, was charged with his murder. After accepting a plea agreement, Lisa, who claimed to accept responsibility for Lucas’s death but never confessed to causing his injuries, received a sentence so shockingly inadequate that many have called for the judge’s removal from his position.
In this episode, I’ll tell you Lucas’s story, and you’ll also hear my interview with Lucas’s great-grandma, Peggy Thompson, who shared with me her anger over the injustice of Lucas’s case, as well as some of her fondest memories of this sweet little boy.
This is the infuriating story of Lucas Call.

As a woman with a disability of my own (Cerebral Palsy), let me speak up for Shelby here. I have no children of my own at present, but I hope that when I feel ready, I can with the right support. I know of quite a few stories of pretty competent disabled moms. I see no reason why she shouldn't have been able to keep her kids if the right help were in place. Shelby, if you happen to come across this, I just want you to know that what happened to your Lucas was NOT your fault. You are right. What this woman did to him means she should never see the sun again. I feel so badly for you. and I am sending you so many hugs.

If they truely thought shelbys disabilities were impacting her ability to adequately parent they should have put services in place to visit the home and teach her what she needed to learn. From what her grandmother said she was thoughtful about what the baby needed, she sought to read up on when to let a baby cry a little and when to pick him up. She was trying and was doing a good job. With a little guidance she could have been just as good a parent or better than many. Instead they gave her babies to someone who provided no love, abused him and caused his death. The image of Shelby carrying the ashes everywhere she goes is absolutely heartbreaking. She’s had one child murdered, another taken permanently and been banned from having more babies, that’s barbaric. I’m so sorry for what they all went through. The murderer should have this little boys name tattooed on her forehead so she can never escape what she did

I have a friend with downs syndrome, he's a fantastic dad. His daughter and any future children will do well, they have a big supportive family and network of friends. They also get a lot of support from serviced working with them. Sadly this rarely happens, they more often work against these parents which is both infuriating and heartbreaking.

This is disgusting… But not shocking, unfortunately… If you are a parent with a disability, finding out you’re going to be a parent, is it always the joyful happy experience it is for others… There’s always that nibbling thoughts in the back of your mind that at any moment a social worker could swoop in and take your kids at once. You have cross paths with child services, even if you do manage to get your kids back, there’s always that thought if they’re just a couple of minutes late off of the school bus or there’s an unexpected knock at the door that somebody’s coming to take them away, and it’s a fear you have to wrestle with until your children are 18 years old and safely out of the grass of child services. No, I’m not saying every single parent with a disability has this kind of a thing, but it’s a possibility and something that we all worry about… Sometimes intervention is required, but just because somebody is disabled in some fashion does not automatically mean they are going to be a danger to their children and if they need a little bit of support and help from social services to teach them or help them, maintain their home or, in helping raise their children, I think keeping the child with the parents with support is way better than ripping them away and sticking them into some kind of abusive foster home there are good foster homes out there but as we have seen from this podcast… There are also some truly atrocious ones out there as well and just because somebody needs a little help from social services raising their kids or whatever doesn’t make them bad people they just make some people they need a little bit of support, not a judgment from ignorant social workers

There ARE services like that, so it doesn't make sense that they took the kids away. The only thing I can think of is that everyone knew this woman, and knew she wanted a baby girl or something. I've never seen such corruption in my life. How is everyone overlooking this?

When they called her a "paranoid mother" for pointing out injuries on her son... Wow. Isn't it a parent's job to be "paranoid"? They stand in the gap between their child and the world.

It broke my heart to hear Shelby talk about what happened to her son. You can tell she loved him very much. It's not her fault that she has learning disabilities and I think with the right resources her children could have remained in her care. So sad. Lisa, if you are reading this: you're 🗑 🚮. Thank you for the shout out. It was appropriate,, since Lucas was a foster child. For a judge to give that foster mother so little jail time, was sickening. Shelby sounded like a wonderful mother. I’ve adopted all 4 of my kids from the foster care system. One of my adult daughters, who has a low IQ, would make a far better mother than that awful foster mother. I’m really happy that the province of Alberta really is striving to bring help and guidance into birth homes instead of simply removing children. Sometimes parents just need to learn about available resources. Sometimes the kids have to be removed. Listening to the grandmother was heartbreaking. RIP little Lucas! ❤️

i'm physically disabled so not the same, but i understand what she needed: just some help. even if she wasn't disabled, just an extra pair of hands. a nurse. a social worker. just someone to come and ease her pressure. everyone's treated this poor mommy like shit when they're the ones responsible. they're the ones who killed him. it breaks my heart knowing she probably blames herself.

I cannot stop thinking about little Lucas and his poor Mother. And grandmother. What kind of country turns a blind eye to baby murder? This one has really rocked me. 😭 As a grieving Momma...and also one who had to fight continuously with DCFS. And one who risked arrest on multiple occasions when I was told my Bubby "wasn't feeling up to a visit" (because I knew the horror stories even before blogs) and showing up anyway demanding to see for myself my baby was ok... as all of those things... my heart is shattered for this family.

I have known several foster parents who shop for n kids and only want one from a group. It pisses me off to no end. And they will keep the others only until the adoption of the one is in the bag. They will fight bio family ( aunts, uncles, grand parents) who want them all just for that one child they feel is worthy. All children are worthy and siblings should be together.

This is mind boggling and the furthest thing from justice you could get! Im always blown away at the ineptitude of Social Care in the US. Here in the U.K we work WITH the family if a parent has LD and support them in their parenting, even if a parent is in child protection level 4. However, the one thing that would be a huge risk factor was that Shelby remained in contact with or was supportive of her husband following his conviction for CP. That would not be acceptable on any level. She would have been worked with by social care as to why this is unacceptable and her low IQ in understanding the risks involved would have been taken into account.

I believe this is one of the most infuriating story I learned about (the two others being the stories of Thomas Valva and James Biel), and I know about a lot of child abuse death stories. Where is the jusice for Lucas in all of this? Or even the closure for his family? It seems everything has been made to accommodate Lisa Venderlinden, who actually killed an innocent 2 year old child! I feel for Shelby, who did everything she could to protect her son, but was not only dismissed but also punished after Lucas' death and C.C's adoption with CPS forbidding her from having more children. While the actual murderer of her son walks free and can have more children if she wishes to. This is completely messed up. I can certainly see the ressemblance with the story of baby Alissa.

It sounds like Shelby was a much better mom (even with her disabilities) . Most definitely better then the people that they were given to. I hope Lisa gets what's coming to her. At least she will get hers in the afterlife. GOD knows what she has done. I hope she lives in constant fear that she might get figured out. I know personally about child services I was in the system as a child & I am 61 years old. I still remember some of the stuff that happened & still have some issues. • @anonymouse867

I love to hear you get fired up about these cases. I can't with this woman and I refuse to call her by her name! She reminds me of an, "angel of mercy" nurse mixed with someone who has munchausen syndrome by proxy, (now known as factitious disorder imposed on another). I wonder how many times she had to tell the families of her patients, "I'm sorry that I just didn't or couldn't do more..."? Most first time parents, with no medical background, know to take a toddler to urgent care or the emergency room when the child becomes so ill that they are repeatedly vomiting, cannot keep down solids and are covered in bruises, unless, of course, they are the cause of the child's issues and injuries. However, it would have been far better for this woman to either return Lucas and CC to foster care to be placed in another home or take a badly injured Lucas to the hospital than to ever allow him to die from his injuries. I will never understand how the minds of people like this work. How do people wake up everyday planning out how they're going to abuse a child. This woman was conscious of what days not to abuse Lucas so he wouldn't have marks on visitation days once Shelby noticed them. I have the capacity to understand how an overwrought parent could accidentally go overboard resulting in an injury, meaning one, and only one, and learn their lesson. I understand that a new baby can tire a parent out like nothing in the world and a toddler can absolutely test your patience, but these reactions are irrational. If you have an infant that will not stop crying, as long as you've changed them, fed them, burped them, given them some quality attention and made sure they are not in any way suffering from anything, put in some earbuds, listen to something relaxing and place the baby in another room behind a closed door for a little while. Many times it's simply overstimulation and shaking or hurting a baby is most definitely not going to make them stop crying. If you find that they continue to have these spells at the same time daily, it may just be part of who they are and it couldn't hurt to address it with their pediatrician. When it comes to toddlers, remember who you're dealing with. You're not matching wits with another adult. Keep your sense of humor about you and get the kids outside or someplace where they can burn off their excess energy and tire themselves out for a long afternoon nap. If you can't make it through those two phases of parenting God love ya when they become preteens and teenagers 🙄 They will actively and intentionally attempt to drive you insane and drive you and your spouse apart because they'd rather stand up against one of you than both of you 😂🤣😂 Really though, this lady is one sick POS! The judge delivered no justice. He should have recused himself from this case due to conflict interest. There should also be a more streamlined process for impeaching judges or removing them from the bench for dereliction of duty. A year for murdering a 2 year old? What is this world coming to?

They are just as much to blame as Linda herself. Lucas's death was preventable on sooooooo many levels yet not one person stepped up. Not one. In fact, they were going to punish the bio mother if she continued to report any more signs of abuse!!! Um, SAY WHAT!!! I just cannot.
How Shelby and David lost their lawsuit is beyond me. All of the facts are there. Anyone with a brain can see that Vanderlinden killed Lucas. And yet she was able to go on being a mother to all those kids she collected like trophies. (I haven't finished this podcast yet. It's made me so mad that I had to take a break. So I don't know if you say or not but does Vanderlinden get to keep Shelbys other child, the little girl, CC?
It's just so heartbreaking to think that this is just one instance. This shit happens on a daily basis. People in power positions getting off scot free because of their "connections".
I like to believe that there are more good hearted people on this Earth than there are bad, but, when I hear of stories such as this it's so very hard to keep that mindset.
So sorry for your injustice Lucas Call. May your life and your story pave the way for change....some day..
I also wanted to say thank you, Laine. You are an incredible reporter and a fantastic storyteller. You're an unsung hero in my eyes. Everyone of your podcasts that I have listened to has left a profound and lasting mark on my heart. I first came across STLC last winter with the case of Avery Lee.
I'm a recovering heroin addict. I'm 39 years old and I have 30 months clean as of November 1st. I have a 6 year old little girl and I've had my fair share of experience with DCFS. Thankfully my story has a happy ending. I dealt with DCFS for 3 and a half years all together. My mom was able to foster Molly (my daughter) while I went through treatment and sober living and did what I had to do to turn my life around and I'm so grateful for her. Without her I very well could have lost my daughter to the system because you just never know. DCFS claims to be all about protecting children but in reality they mostly pander to the parents.
Listening to your podcasts is a grave reminder to be grateful for all the blessings I have and to always hug my daughter a little bit tighter. ❤

This is truly disgusting. If they thought Shelby couldn't provide adequate care (despite her best efforts because of a disability no fault of her own) they could have given her assistance & resources to help. Instead they took her children away for not even a good reason imo. They ignored previous allegations of child abuse & didn't even try to substantiat those claims. They did poor Shelby so wrong in many ways but also when she's reporting as well that her son was not being given proper care & was covered in bruises just generally looking unwell & in complete fear of the foster parent they have the audacity to threaten her to stop reporting it or risk not even getting to visit with her own children?? One year? County jail. The connections this Lisa must have to pull off this slap on the wrist after beating a defenseless baby TO DEATH. 70 letters to the judge?! This is outrageous & I can't believe I've never heard of this case sooner.

It makes me mad that dcf took her child just because she has a disability, instead of taking her kids why couldn’t they just help her. If they were worried then why couldn’t they help her abs give her classes or help her with other things. They just went to take kids and some people say they wouldn’t just take kids just to take kids, yeah will if have a disability they would or try too.

Shall we look at the criminal statistics relating to intelligence and child harm, please? I can only recall a handful of cases where clinically low IQ was to blame for a child's neglect, injury, or death. Clearly, intelligence didn't make a difference in this case. It never made sense why they took the children until I heard the Grandmother say it was a vindictive start. Disgusting.

Not sure if I commented this already but just so you know county jail is 1 million times worse than prison I don't care what county it is or what state it is it is horrible! Horrible! I've been to our county jail for traffic issues just traffic issues and this has been over the past 6 years and it has deteriorated so much just in the three or four visits I've had to spend there the longest I've been there was 72 hours and it was deplorable. I want helping of green beans the whole 72 hours because I didn't want to have to take a shit in front of people it's nothing like prison. Mind you I've never been to prison but I know people who have and they said prison is a day spa compared to county jails around the country so take what little comfort is available in knowing that she spends a year in county jail assuming she did her jail time and it was most likely a experience that would make her suicidal

This is one of the most unjustified cases you've covered aside from James Biel. People murder adults and get life sentences. It's almost like saying these kids lives didn't matter and its disgusting, how this justice system works sometimes. 2 years old this poor baby was and he went through horror, terror and torture. In almost all these cases CPS or social services sentence these kids to their deaths. An organization who are supposed to save these kids lives. I genuinely blame this bullshit of a system there is. I still can't wrap my head around how these people really do these things to these little kids and babies. They should have given his mother resources and help. Provided her with some kind of support. Im so mad at that sentence.
