I have seen pictures of the this Rattle. I am almost sure it didn't get anywhere near the drawing board especially since Maus was totally impractical. Minor correction. Rail Guns can not traverse left or right. As a result, they were always used on curved track. That way the whole assembly can be rolled forward or rearward in order to aim the gun left and right. Gun elevation and amount of propellant determines how far it shoots. Mostly used against hardened targets, ,Ike forts or bunkers or whole cities.

If the enemy troops stood still in an open field several miles away yeah they'd be destroyed and they'd deserve it, but a even a quick zig-zag walk would prevent them from being fired on, and once they were within a certain range they could stand right in front of the gun and be safe, it just couldn't hit anything that close, after that the only thing protecting the gun would be the support crew.

And here's another stupid one. The Gustav was a long range siege gun, good at decimating cities, less so on mobile troops. The gun had no mobility, none, it had to be moved to its destination on specialized train tracks and the gun itself could only be moved up and down, no lateral movement. If the enemy troops stood still in an open field several miles away yeah they'd be destroyed and they'd deserve it, but a even a quick zig-zag walk would prevent them from being fired on, and once they were within a certain range they could stand right in front of the gun and be safe, it just couldn't hit anything that close, after that the only thing protecting the gun would be the support crew.

The team consisted of 250 men to assemble the gun, 2,500 to lay the rail, 2 flak battalions (2,000 men?) to protect a system from air attack. The operation and protection team numbers almost 5,000.
Gustav canon was created but never fired. In 1945 the American soldiers broke it into piecem and left for scrap metal.
The shells are about 2000 pounds each. The gun itself only used 2 train tracks. It's actually incorrectly designed honestly.
And it was only fired during the siege of stevastopol in WWII in 1941 I believe.
Germany had 2 (Gustav and Dora) of these. Gustav saw action during the conquest of Crimea and was one of the artillary pieced used to shell Sevastopol , Dora was present near (15km outside of) Stalingrad.
