Nice idea but the vent holes you created were covered up by the screw flange as well as the mason jar retainer ring. Not that the light needs venting other than to prevent possible condensation if used outdoors. You might want to actually get a glass/tile drill bit and make the holes in the bottom of the jar or wait until its finished to drill the holes in the lid so you can make sure the light is vented. A safer way to make the hole in the lid for the light itself is to purchase a hole saw to the size you need made for drilling into metal.
You take the thingy and the watchamacallit right after the huskerdoo. Then apply the doodad to the thingamabob on the widget. All so very technical ladies.
blah blah blah IKEA blah blah blah IKEA blah blah blah IKEA blah blah blah IKEA .
that´s all I heard
Thanks for the ideas! Ive made alot of these lamps from goodwill lamps and they are never the same project, you always have to figure out how the heck to make it work. Thanks so much for the ikea idea! Ive been looking around everywhere for one that easy to do! Great video!
Followed the instructions and I'm obsessed with mine! Thank you so much for the idea and tutorial!!
These DIY Mason jar lights from TheSorryGirls give a beautiful, rustic feel to any outdoor space. The twinkle reminds us of catching lightning bugs as kids!
Thanks guys! I never thought about making those little holes first. That helps a lot!
I love this! I used a similar cord from IKEA and DIY'ed a lamp using a basket and it turned out super nice. Keep up the good work!
was looking for a manual for a jar light for a while now. thanks for your amazing amazing video, everything seems to be really simple and elegant :)
I did enjoy this tutorial. I was forwarded this video by my friend who wants me to make him some -- he has not yet realized the joy of creating with one's hands and the pride of saying "I made it." He wants to put a small LED light inside and put something with color in the bottom, perhaps glass beads or plastic "gems" that can be found in craft stores.
Thanks for the detail about the vent holes. He won't need them with LED bulbs, but regular bulbs might be a hazard without them.
Just a PS: Cost Plus carries that same type of cord and fixture in white, in case anyone is looking for that effect. It's by the large round paper lanterns.
I love this, such a cute idea!
One million subscribers in the making! I am laughing because you got me addicted!
This project was really awesome!! An ALTERNATIVE idea- instead of punching a bunch of holes in the metal and rubber lid (which was really hard for me) i used a DVD case (NOT a plastic CD case) and made a circle the same size at the lid and cut a hole in the middle. It works just as well (: i really enjoyed the video!!!! great idea!
That is a really clever way to avoid having to fight the metal lid!
Love the look, would make great patio lights, thanks for sharing ladies!
This is an awesome wedding idea for those DIY brides and having an outdoors based wedding! So glad I found you guys xD
Love this tutorial! I saw a chandelier of mason jar lights and was wondering how i could DIY it! And now I know :) thanks!

salute girls! 1st video of mason jars lamp that I have seen that think of the heat holes
This is so cool! Wow.
Gorgeous backdrop, love the dress you're wearing Kelsey, it suits you really well.
Another idea is go to a home depot and buy a Hole saw set you can use that to cut out your center holes

You guys need to buy a hole saw. It would make life a lot easier when making these light fixtures. Nice light.

Almost has a Steampunk vibe...Real nice, looks great.
Woah, I saw this in a museum in Seattle!
I love this!! You just earned a new subscriber (:
Thanks for the video. The project turned out nice. Punching holes for ventilation was a good tip.
Great idea I will do this
you also can put the jar upside down in a base to hide the cable and put in the table
it's great idea to recycle Empty jars
I love it
First, y'all are a cute pair and did a great job. Second, what were the lumens on the bulb you used? How much light does it generate at night? I want to create a bright outdoor light for a dinner party, but can't chance heat build up and issues with cracking or, worse yet, exploding ball jar. What has your experience been so far.
You ladies are great!!! Looks awesome. Some feedback on the project for next time;
1) You don't have to make a circle of tiny holes and then rip the centre out with pliers. It's soft. A good pair of scissors will get the job done if you don't have tin snips.
2) The ventilation holes you made were covered up when you screwed the plate to the socket...hmmm.
Otherwise, great job!!
Do not listen to the haters!
Nice project! So what if some one else would do it differently.
You girls did it first! Thank you for sharing!
At Home Depot the cord and socket set was $5.47, at Ikea it was $8.00....or you can get a really cheap lamp at Goodwill /Salvation Army stores, take the socket/cord set from this.....Hang 3 at different lengths for a really great look for a country kitchen....I may do this when I redecorate our kitchen...Doing a Tuscan kitchen.....Thanks girls...
LOVE IT!!
You two are so sweet.....love how you finish each others sentences haha
Great idea for my dark back yard. I will string them up for party lights. Thanks Ladies and keep up the good work.
What kind of cam do you use to record your videos ? I love the contrast and the colors
VERY nice.
These look great! Old coke bottles would be cool too! And maybe LED's
Could you post a link to the cord set? It's a great idea and really nice looking light!
wow, that is so awesome and pretty. :)
i like your smiles
You can really see how far they have come from when this was filmed to today.
Sooo pretty
I made one and looks really neat and hung it over my kitchen sink. I had a complaint from my other half that it has sort of a garage utility light feel. I worry that he may be right. Although it's neat to look at, I am not sure that in that lighting application it looks best. Still getting used to it though, maybe we just need to get used to it.
...I like the way you made this without feeling like you had to run out and buy a bunch of tools...it's all about innovation...
omg I want to try out these hipster lights! =D
Sweet!
so adorable
awesome! thanks ladies! :)
I was waiting for this one! I saw it in your last video, thanks!
"679"
I dig it
I love IKEA!
Its 3 years later, and Im wondering how to get a cool rustic vintage wall lamp for cheaper than 40 bucks online when this video comes up.. wow thanks girls. U saved me couple bucks.
Thanks girls sure will go straight to Ikeas because others want much more!
Yes, Hole saw will work also. Of course if you don't have a drill that won't work. You should have paper under the items you are spraying. Great DYI project.
great video...I'm doing prop for movie prod and u inspire me each time I look ur video...ur kicking ass girls !!!! DONT U STOP DOING VIDEOS!!!...." unless u don't like it loll
nice!
Is painting electricity safe?
A Dremel tool (or some other similar brand) would cut that lid *so* much cleaner. You could even sand it afterwards with a different attachment to give it a smoother edge. Ask a handyman neighbor if they have one you can borrow if you can't afford one. They're worth the $50-100 if you do a lot of DIY because there are so many attachments available to do a myriad of tasks. A hole-saw that attaches to a drill would also work well. Put the lid & ring on the jar to secure the lid while working.
Maybe I looked in the wrong place. I went to the lighting section at Lowes like where they have lighting kits and cords and sockets and didn't see one of those, the socket that has the screw on part. What was it called? Maybe my Lowes just didn't have any? I ended up using a cord and socket that was attached to one of those metal clip on shop lights. I removed the metal shade part and the clip on thingy and was left with just a plug and socket but there wasn't a way to anchor it to the lid.
Beautiful:)
will definitely use this for my next party
Where did you get yours jars because I've looked on the Internet and they are quite expensive. I also live in England so I don't have the same shops as you :(
I am so doing this for my room
awesome tutortial =D
Love this i would like to see other things you us to make light with.. The mason jar would not it with my room
how do you do the start f the video? and what i mean is the words in the circle. and what do you use to edit? i ues the mac movie program
You could use a hole saw or forstner bit to cut the hole in the lid, might save some time.
Constant maintenance of the comment log is an unfortunate reality of the tube. Delete and ban the trolls.
A scroll saw will make cutting the lid a snap. Punch one hole thread the blade through and connect the blade to the saw. Then just run it like a sewing machine. Really cool light girls thanks.
