Made this yesterday with the kids and deflated it today, it was such a fun craft. Kids loved it. Thanks for the clear and informative tutorial. God Bless!xxx
Just noticed a awesome Idea you could also use this as a plant holder, you would put your potted plant in the big opening and put the base of the plant at the bottom of the shade to stabilize the shade, I think it would look really cool and modern especially if you spray painted the shade in a metallic rose gold paint and made different sizes to create a awesome look on a coffee table.
planning on opening my yarn shop and this is such a cool easy idea... now I know how I want to decorate the lights and maybe hang a few others from the ceiling! THANKS!
I just finished making two of these lamps for my children for Christmas gifts. After completing the first one following the instructions given here, I figured out a couple of things to make it much easier and therefore faster to wrap the ball. First, I took an industrial size zip tie used for packaging items and super glued it into a ring. I then super glued the ring onto the bottom of the ball. Then I used an old bottle cap the size I needed for the opening at the top and super glued it onto the top of the ball. This not only gave me a guideline as to where to wrap, it also prevented the string from slipping and shifting as I was wrapping it. Once dry, it was quite easy to pop off the bottle cap and lower ring leaving me with perfectly shaped openings. I also poked a small hole into an old sour cream container lid and threading the end of my yarn through it. This served to wipe off excess glue mixture so the yarn wouldn't be too wet and cut down on the mess it made.
Deedat Ibrahim, you are most likely doing the same thing I did when I first started and that is having too wet of yarn. There are two different ways to combat this. One way is to simply pull the yarn between two fingers to remove the excess glue mixture before applying to the ball. Warning...this way worked well but turned out to be very very messy. The second way is to use an old plastic lid the same size as the bowl you are using to hold the glue mixture and yarn and make a small hole in the middle of the lid. I used a nail to start the hole and pushed an awl into the hole a little at a time until I had the right size hole. You want the hole to be big enough for the yarn to thread thru snugly but not so snug that it snags the yarn. Once your lid is ready, thread the end of your wet yarn thru the hole in the lid working from the inside of the lid out. Now push the lid down over the top of the bowl and just continue pulling the yarn thru the lid as you work. This works the same as using your fingers but is way less messy. Hope this helps!
I'm SO GLAD I found this video! It's exactly what I want for two of my light fixtures and I know that if I make them, they'll be the exact right size and formation...also price point, color, and funkiness. I love this. I LOVE this! I LOVE THIS!!!
You are my new favorite. Your voice is soothing and you make the steps easy to follow. Love the subtle background changes. You look like you are having so much fun. Can't wait to see more.
Thank you for the most understanding tutorial, my son needs to make yarn lamp and his teacher gave them a video where they need to watch and follow each steps but the vid explanations is way more or super complicated, glad i found your vid.
Here is a cheap and tidy trick...wrap the bowl with cling wrap or plastic wrap. Poke a small hole in the middle for the yarn to come out of and now you can pull the yarn out as fast as you want to with no mess. Hope that helps a bit. It's what I do.
Are used to make these with my granny and her trick. She would use a giant giant size Elmers glue three times the size of the one you use. She would shove the yarn inside with the glue mixture and then she would use the top of the Elmers glue bottle and she would weave the tip of the yarn through it and then just pull through there and be a little bit less messy beautiful job. Thank you for sharing.
Budget friendly lighting! Thanks for showing how to use the hanging light fixture, 3/8 inch 2-piece-clamp connector,; & 1 x 3/4" washer. Great directions - so helpful!!
Dana, Thank you for the tutorial! Just what I needed to know! ( I am going to make pillar lamps to go around the pool, using the core of bolts of material.) I have a suggestion that may help you dispense yarn faster with more absorption and less flinging of glue. Rewind the yarn into a ball. My momma has crocheted ever since I can remember and she always rewinds her skeins and puts them in a shallow bowl. It also keeps the yarn from getting tangled. Just a thought. 👍😊 Thanks again.
Awesome tutorial, I love making things too! I also made a DIY lamp, and as much as it does look good, I swear I love it more because it's the work of my hands! ;) Great work!
This idea is amazing and easy ! I was looking for a theme to remake my room and just this gave me a start off ! So cool now i know exactly what i want in all ! I'm subscring , you also explain so simple i could make these activities with my sisters thank you so much !
Love this idea! Mine came out beautifully. It looks amazing in my bedroom. Planning on making another one so I can have matching bedroom lamps. Thanks!
Great tutorial, you show us in easy to follow steps and include all the tips (love the home made apron!) and you make it so much fun, I am definitely going to try this. The lampshade is just too cool and you can make it match whatever colour scheme you wish.....10 out of 10 for this and I have subscribed, thank you for sharing.
Even if I don't do this project, I am enjoying the heck out of watching this video. You are super entertaining, and I love the end result! Yay! Thank you : )

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing this video, Dana :) I saw one of these in a furniture store and think it'd be really fun to do it DIY style. Could you share a breakdown of the material costs for this project?
Hi and hello there ! Just caught the show myself . I may be able to answer your question. Depending on your location of residence You shouldn't have to really spend a lot of money for this project to start yarn usually 2 to $3.00 for a roll and any size ball let's say no more than $5.00 dollars and at a hardware store fore your light bulb and electronical wire And clips to hang your lamp looking at no more than $20.00 or so dollars tops . Good luck . And enjoy your project Z.
P.S. I love how you change your backgrounds for videos. I'm a beginning sewer and my hubby bought me a Baby Lock machine about 2 years ago. I love the machine, but I don't use it often because I'm a visual learner and paper patterns confuse me. Videos help me fully understand. Perhaps you could do a pattern tutorial for an easy project. I would love that. Thanks so much. New subbie!!!

Try using scotch tape for attaching zip ties: much easier.

To help keep glue mess to a minimum you should put the lid on your container and run the thread/string thru a small hole you punch in the lid.
