I used to live in Londonderry before most politicians were born. I also lived in the south well before the EU was formed. The border existed then, but was not a problem. Yes, there was a border control that we had to pass through but it was not a problem. The remainers are making this a problem for their own agenda.

I cannot believe that society in Ireland ,both sides ,has not moved on from the times of the troubles and apart from a few hardliners ,from either side ,that this is the issue that it is being assumed .This is a political convenience that emanates from Varadkar for whatever purpose as prior to his installation as Leader his predecessor Kenny had no problem with the border .

The country is falsely divided between a fictional left/right. The truth is, any sane, self thinking person agrees on most things. Insanity starts with things like groups which divide is all into stereotypes. Groups which serve no purpose today. Things like feminist marches, BLM and antifa are all groups funded by the same people evidently. These are the same bloodlines who push superstate movement, eu army, etc. Anne is by no means part of any of these things, which is why she would never be allowed a position of high authority again even if she wanted one. She is a self thinker with real opinions who wont be bullied into speaking in a politically correct manner, and yet still she always maintains a respectful etiquette.

I was countering your opinion of speaking of Britain as a whole collective rather then her views and arguments being a representation of the entire population. Now you have clarified what you were speaking about I can see your point. However, overgeneralised points such as refering to the whole country was what I pointed fault at, not your point surrounding Widdicombes views and points.

@@anthonyglee1710 Don't do that, you know I'm not critiquing Oxford as a University. But attending Oxford is a good indicator of how privileged someone is and how out of touch they are with the public and real working people. You said that you "wonder if Owen Jones has ever had a real job" to discredit him as a person, as if anything he has to say is invalid because he's so privileged, but you ignore that he's sat next to bloody Anne Widdecombe, who is if anything so much more privileged and out of touch with the lives of regular people, has she ever had a "real job?" She's also just as much of a smug ego-maniac. Just feels like a kinda sneaky double standard to try and get people to instantly dismiss anything Owen Jones says without listening to him and it annoyed me, sorry maybe that's too cynical.

She talks about the border between Gibraltar and Spain as an example of how the Northern Ireland border could work. But the reply (that is cut short in the video) is that both Gibraltar and Spain are currently *IN THE EU*. If we leave with no deal, the situation becomes *nothing like* the current border between Gibraltar and Spain. If you regard that as making sense, then, well, feel free to explain. There's a reason people think Leavers are stupid.

    • @djbcybertench
      @djbcybertench 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Greg M “people think leavers are stupid”... resorting to insults aimed at 17.4 million voters is devisive and unhelpful. You may have family or friends that voted leave, or disagree with you in some other way, do you call them stupid ? I value our democracy and respect people having diverse views and opinions. Being free to express their views is an important part of that. Ok, you picked up on what I assume was a mistake by AW but that doesn’t make her stupid.
There are 12 European nations (population >300 million) not in the EU with thousands of kilometres of borders... most of which are not “hard” e.g. Finland/Russia, Switzerland/France, Spain/Morocco etc. The population of Northern Ireland is less than 2 million and Ireland less than 5 million... managing their border could readily be modelled on one of the existing EU borders which are far more extensive and potentially complex. It seems evident that the nominated (not elected by citizens) EU officials are using the historically sensitive Irish issue as a spurious negotiation tactic.

I disagree that the Leave campaign demonised immigrants. It simply pointed to the reality of the existence of mass immigration and the effects of too much immigration on jobs, wages, housing and services. Insofar as they commented on the quality of immigrants, it was based on realistic estimations and analyses of accurate figures (e.g. labour skill levels, the danger of terrorist infiltration through migration from North Africa and the Middle East, etc.) which I suppose some will disagree with (wrongly, imo) but the intent was not to demonise and did not apply to the vast majority of (legal) immigrants.
But even if it were true...
The Remain campaign *definitely* did demonise Leave voters and their reasons for voting calling them racist and stupid.
Which of these had a more distorting effect on the vote? It's at least equally bad of both. But I'd argue that the Remain camp's demonisation of Leave voters and arguments had a more distorting effect on the vote.

All options are fulfilling the referendum result. Now if one is voted down by Parliament that leaves us with two. If the European Union refuses to negotiate further (against article 50) that gives us one option. A second referendum is not an option as the only mandate to carry that out lay with the lib dems, they didn't do to well. I'm actually at the point now, where even as a Remainer whose life is going to be massively complicated by leaving the EU, believes we should just go. The unicorns and all the nonsense will only be exposed at this point, when reality meets the rhetoric.
If I'm wrong and it's not a disaster then fine, we've put this damn issue behind us and we can move on, but if it is a disaster and we do lose jobs, investment and the economy takes a huge hit, then nobody can cry project fear anymore, and we can actually face up to the fact that for all it's imperfections, life as part of the EU is far preferable to life outside it and arrange another referendum where we re-apply to join.

    • @PNETriffid

Part of me agrees with you, however the Brexit traitors are so unhinged and lacking in reason that they ( and their puppet-masters in the Murdoch/US controlled media) will blame others. These liars will blame the 'liberals', 'Syrian refugees' etc. and the EU itself rather than accept culpability for their own bigoted folly.

@John Hurley I don't take offence. I just wonder if your inference at my 'thick opinion-filled nonsense' is directed at my belief (along with every single serious economist) that leaving the World's largest free trade union will be economically disastrous. Or that those responsible will try and dodge the blame (bearing in mind that not one of those lying traitors who claimed leaving the EU would free up £350 million a year for the NHS*, has admitted that it was a big fat fib?)
*By the way John, seeing as you're from 'across the pond' I'd best explain, NHS stands for National Health Service, you see in civilised countries we actually look after our sick, well we will do until the likes of Trump-loving Farage and Boris take charge.

We ended up leaving with a whole year to transition and we still have ended up with shortages and disruption. Crashing out is a very good description for what Widdecombe wanted.
It wouldn't have hurt her very much of course but it would have caused a lot of hardship for everyone else.
I think that given the referendum result it was right that we left but has we done it Widdecombe's way it would have been much worse for the British people.
