You make a fair point about having different shapes of knot to choose from; I really like a fan shape and I think I could quite easily have all fans! One shape I didn't like was the flat top; I really wasn't sure that added anything. All the best mate.
Hi Mark. You have great taste in knots! I really enjoy the synbad and the brown synthetic knot. They're some of my best performing brushes. I recently moved, and the bathroom is smaller and narrow near the sink. This has made me use more lower backbone natural hair brushes because they don't fling lather at the mirror as much. I recently got a great deal ($40) on a 24mm Savile Row brush, and it has really been a joy to use. It releases lather so easily. Take care and be well.

Hi Mark, Im really into brushes , more so than any other shave product. I have about 80 brushes and I too like the feel of the Barbershop handle brush, with that in mind, the choice of brush which is my favourite out the ones I have is easy, it's the Frank Shaving 'Conversational Shaving' brush with the 24mm G4 knot. There is something about that handle & knot which suits me very well. My other favourite is, the DSCosmetic PaulHFilms original Barbershop red handle with the 24mm (I think, but it maybe 26mm) white Cashmere knot...At this present time, I'm trying to get all the Frank Shaving 'G' series of Knots and all Of them to be set in the 'Barbershop' handle (no29 handle, as FS refers to them as) I didn't know anything about the G5 knot, who made it , and which type it is, A, B or C, so I'm very pleased that you were able to give out some information about that knot. I know there is a G1, G2, G4, G5, G7, G8 and G9, all of which are made by FS. I could do with someone explaining in detail all about the 'G' series and other types of synthetic knots. I hope you are able to put out a future video about synthetic knots. Before I go, I have the following in the G series. FS 24mm G4 Conversational Shaving brush. FS 24mm G5 black bulb in a no29 (Black/Blue) handle. FS 26mm G7 bulb in no29 (Black/Gold) handle. I'm sure you have a fantastic collection; brushes are great, not only to use but also to look at and I certainly do like the barbershop style handle as it's so comfortable. I've seen the conversational shaving brush, it is very nice looking. I have just shaved with the FS G9 knot, from MMGP. It has a ton of backbone. So much so that the first use of it was not a comfortable experience. It may break in and ease off a little, I hope it does, we'll have to see. Great brush discussion video Mark! I really like your vintage wood handle brushes and the old Rubberset 400s. I have a RazoRock 400 aluminum handle synthetic brush that is similar but not as shiny as your Rubbersets. I'm not sure if it is completely solid, but I'm sure it's not hollow. For me 26mm synthetic brushes are my favorite. I have 4 or 5 PAA brushes, they're great, as you know 😎👍 And not expensive. I haven't tried Maritime brushes yet, but they have some awesome handles. I really like when they combine wood and resin in the handles, they look amazing to me 🤩👌 No worries about the videos Mark! Hey Steve, I hadn't seen Maritime brushes before and, after looking at their website, they are well priced. Something for me to keep an eye on. I like Clipper tea. The teabags are unbleached and the bags are not made of plastic, as some are. Take care👍

Very nice collection Mark, the aluminium ruberset really does look so well engineered. I have a Simpson brush which is nice, however due to the large size of my hands Omega is my most common used brush. Hope all is going well. Thanks for a great video! Best wishes Andy
I can certainly understand this Andy and Omega do make some chunky handles. It seems that a bigger handle would need a bigger knot; perhaps the reason I'm seeing lots of 26, 28 - 30mm knots is as simple as there being a lot of big fellows in the world 😀 It's an interesting thought. @@FriendshipShaving yes it is a thought, the omega knot is pretty big to get used to at the start but like everything you get used to it after a few shaves!
I tend to like my brushes with taller handles, like the old "Dbl Duck 3" you showed and even had a local brush Artisan make a modern version of it, also my favourite brushes are the local Artisan (Australia) made brush handles, particularly the ones where I've had a say in the design, shape and colours. As for knots I prefer my Synthetics on the soft side like the Synbad, Pony (Syn.Horse) and Cashmere knots, and I also prefer the AP Shave Co. versions. For Synthetic and Boar knots I prefer 24mm and OK with 26mm knots but for Badgers I prefer no bigger than 24 and 22 is optimal, I find Boti has a good range of Badger and Boar knots. Hello, my friend. Thank you for letting me know what you like to use; finding a local artisan and having a say in the design of your brush is a wonderful idea, very good indeed. I like to have a hole 2mm larger than the knot size, which allows me to place the knot until the fibres just sit in contact with the edge of the hole. Modern manufacturers seem to be reducing that 2mm gap. It's a bloody strange idea!😂
AP shave co “Titanium” knot is the same as Simpson “platinum” which is their premium synthetic. Was very nice but had a touch too much backbone for me to splay easily. I had loft maxed out at the time on a 26mm knot. If I had to try another one it would be 24mm with higher loft.

I am able to afford the PAA brush or two, and have found them to be incredible value and enjoyable brush to use. I'm wondering, have you tried any of PAA's razors? And what's your drink of the day?
Good day, Prentiss. I purchased my Rubberset brushes from eBay. I tried a PAA razor, once; I can't remember what it was called now, but it had a fluted head-cap. PAA do make superb products, that are very good value for money, even their solid aluminium Rubberset style brushes are very good value. My drink of the day is ground coffee and sometimes a diet coke! I don't drink alcohol very much, as it really has an effect upon my brain injury. I did use to love a nice pint of pear cider in the summertime and quite like vodka!
Hi Mark, and I pray your personal circumstances have improved. You do look, and sound quite tired my friend. I just spent seven days in the hospital for a nasty infection on my lower right leg, about two weeks after fall through a broken stair case and getting a large nasty laceration on the outside portion of my lower right leg from the ankle up to the knee that required quite a bit of stitching… about two weeks later, infections set in to it and the other wounds. Per our previous conversation, this is not my first about with these infections. Though I did not get around to commenting, while in the hospital, I did watch some of your videos at night. But enough about all that… I’ll pray for you. What tea are you drinking? I’m still drink English teas, PG Tips, London Cuppa and Yorkshire. After moving back to the states, I so very much missed my English tea. However, after the computer age and Internet in the late 1990s, I was able to once again purchase my English teas. Nowadays, I can actually order them from Amazon. However, I still order from the English tea store, several times a year. Just know it comes from England makes it taste better… 🇬🇧 I only have a small number of brushes… three Badger Brushes, two Omega Boar Brushes… and my father’s and Grandfather’s old Boar Brushes. I also have two Yaqi Synthetic Brushes. One of which stays in my travel kit… because the synthetic brushes dry much quicker than natural bristles. I have a Park Two Band Badger and and inexpensive Badger from Amazon which is a “Grand Slam” … that I used quite often. The Parker I’ve had for about 20 years now, and it some well broken-in, it’s just marvelous. Big knot however, and lather goes all over… up my nose, in my ears and sometimes in my eye if not careful… but it’s so soft, smooth and just feels lovely. Lately, I find myself using my two Omega Boar Brushes (Red Handled Professional & Long Handled Black 10098), they so well broken-in, and they really pamper my face and are so therapeutic while weathering. I’ve gotten very used to using them now and creating wonderful weather with them. And as I’m sure you know, they require more water than most brushes, because they’re really thirsty. But once you get the knack, they’re just marvelous! Take care, my friend, and we’ll talk soon.

Of course it's well known they grow good tea in Yorkshire! I am drinking a brand called Clipper, mostly because their teabags are not dyed and they don't contain plastic netting! Great vid. I am behind a bit. We have similar tastes in brushes and knots my friend. I like 24-26mm. I have 1 28 silvertip and like it but it’s a big boy to me. A bit of a soap eater and more time to cleanup but I do enjoy it and the handle colors are nice(red, black,silver). I like a softer brush with just a little backbone that splays easy. Minimal/no scrub. - My favorite synthetic knots - 25mm muhle STF- AP shave co handle set at 58mm loft. Some backbone but is soft and easy splay - yaqi 26mm brown pony knot on rainbow handle - cheap too $15usd. . I think it may be same knot as Andrew’s brown knot. Badger - 3band silvertip is prob my favorite although I like a 2 band that is soft and not too high density(DG b13 and a Yaqi). Plus a 24 mountain white. Boar- b1 and b2 - zenith. Also have an Omega pro 49. Pick 1 Favorite brush - the badger Dec grooming B13 in the Wild West brushworks handle. Where’s that shavemac 3band white w/ brown belt? Where's the Shavemac, you ask. Well, the knot was too floppy, so I went to drill it out and the handle shattered! I was most upset 😐 I've never had that happen before. I'll have to try the Muhle STF again, you have it at a high loft. I seem to remember having one years ago and only using it once because of the excessive backbone. For all the talk of backbone in a badger knot, I feel some of the high end synths have way too much backbone. I got rid of my Truefitt and Hill Wellington synth for that reason. Thanks buddy. That’s the cool thing about AP shave co , Andrew will work with you on loft. I would recommend what I said on the 25. The 23 felt a lot different to me - and it was too small.

Another knot that Tobin Fetters (he has a massive brush collection) is the “Pure Bliss” knot from AP Shave Co. I think Tobin has over 80 synthetic knots and “Pure Bliss” is his new favourite. His YT channel is his name above.

Hello there! I too like the aluminum Rubberset 400-style handles along with other long-handled brushes(especially caravel-style). One of my very favorite brushes is an AP Shave Co. Zen handle loaded with their excellent 24mm G5B knot, the loft is 50mm. AP Shave Co. is my favorite brush company because you can choose the handle, knot & loft of your brush! Another brush I quite like is the 24mm Yaqi Barber Pole brush loaded w/a Tuxedo knot. That brush has a nice long caravel-style handle which feels great in the hand. It’s a great budget-brush, but I still prefer the AP Zen brush. Additionally, I have the AP400 handle loaded with a G5Cset to 50mm, that’s another one of my favorites. So, my personal recommendation would be a Zen handle loaded w/a G5A, B or C, (they’re all great)! If you prefer fan-shaped knots, maybe the G5C would be for you, the G5A is my favorite, but it’s significantly more expensive and only slightly better than the G5B, IMO. The G5B is the least expensive and dries the quickest. As I mentioned previously, any one of those knots is a great choice! Cheers! James

I have two brush handles on the way and will likely have to try all of these knots at some point! I'm definitely going to try the Pure Bliss knot. I just spent seven days in the hospital for a nasty infection on my lower right leg, about two weeks after fall through a broken stair case and getting a large nasty laceration on the outside portion of my lower right leg from the ankle up to the knee that required quite a bit of stitching… about two weeks later, infections set in to it and the other wounds. Per our previous conversation, this is not my first about with these infections. Though I did not get around to commenting, while in the hospital, I did watch some of your videos at night. But enough about all that… I’ll pray for you.
What tea are you drinking? I’m still drink English teas, PG Tips, London Cuppa and Yorkshire. After moving back to the states, I so very much missed my English tea. However, after the computer age and Internet in the late 1990s, I was able to once again purchase my English teas. Nowadays, I can actually order them from Amazon. However, I still order from the English tea store, several times a year. Just know it comes from England makes it taste better… 🇬🇧
I only have a small number of brushes… three Badger Brushes, two Omega Boar Brushes… and my father’s and Grandfather’s old Boar Brushes. I also have two Yaqi Synthetic Brushes. One of which stays in my travel kit… because the synthetic brushes dry much quicker than natural bristles.
I have a Park Two Band Badger and and inexpensive Badger from Amazon which is a “Grand Slam” … that I used quite often. The Parker I’ve had for about 20 years now, and it some well broken-in, it’s just marvelous. Big knot however, and lather goes all over… up my nose, in my ears and sometimes in my eye if not careful… but it’s so soft, smooth and just feels lovely.
Lately, I find myself using my two Omega Boar Brushes (Red Handled Professional & Long Handled Black 10098), they so well broken-in, and they really pamper my face and are so therapeutic while weathering. I’ve gotten very used to using them now and creating wonderful weather with them. And as I’m sure you know, they require more water than most brushes, because they’re really thirsty. But once you get the knack, they’re just marvelous!

George, I am knackered, but doing okay. I'm not sleeping well, half the night it's too hot and then early morning it's bloody cold! Once the weather sorts it's self out that will improve and help me.

Your comment about English tea tasting better, made me chuckle. Of course it's well known they grow good tea in Yorkshire! I am drinking a brand called Clipper, mostly because their teabags are not dyed and they don't contain plastic netting! I was horrified a couple of years ago to realise t-bags did. I think most have changed now. I would hope so.

Great vid. I am behind a bit. We have similar tastes in brushes and knots my friend. I like 24-26mm. I have 1 28 silvertip and like it but it’s a big boy to me. A bit of a soap eater and more time to cleanup but I do enjoy it and the handle colors are nice(red, black,silver). I like a softer brush with just a little backbone that splays easy. Minimal/no scrub.
- My favorite synthetic knots - 25mm muhle STF- AP shave co handle set at 58mm loft. Some backbone but is soft and easy splay - yaqi 26mm brown pony knot on rainbow handle - cheap too $15usd. . I think it may be same knot as Andrew’s brown knot.
Badger - 3band silvertip is prob my favorite although I like a 2 band that is soft and not too high density(DG b13 and a Yaqi). Plus a 24 mountain white.
Boar- b1 and b2 - zenith. Also have an Omega pro 49.
Pick 1 Favorite brush - the badger Dec grooming B13 in the Wild West brushworks handle.

Where's the Shavemac, you ask. Well, the knot was too floppy, so I went to drill it out and the handle shattered! I was most upset 😐 I've never had that happen before. I'll have to try the Muhle STF again, you have it at a high loft. I seem to remember having one years ago and only using it once because of the excessive backbone. For all the talk of backbone in a badger knot, I feel some of the high end synths have way too much backbone. I got rid of my Truefitt and Hill Wellington synth for that reason. Thanks buddy. @@FriendshipShavinga lot of the newer synthetics have too much backbone at least for me. That’s a shame on that shave Mac. What a nice looking brush it was. That’s the cool thing about AP shave co , Andrew will work with you on loft. I would recommend what I said on the 25. The 23 felt a lot different to me - and it was too small.

I have a huge collection of 2 brushes. Yaqi 26 mm Rainbow and AP Shave Co. 26 mm G5C Premium Synthetic. Both are great but I love my G5C best.

Another knot that Tobin Fetters (he has a massive brush collection) is the “Pure Bliss” knot from AP Shave Co. I think Tobin has over 80 synthetic knots and “Pure Bliss” is his new favourite. His YT channel is his name above.

Hello there! I too like the aluminum Rubberset 400-style handles along with other long-handled brushes(especially caravel-style).
One of my very favorite brushes is an AP Shave Co. Zen handle loaded with their excellent 24mm G5B knot, the loft is 50mm. AP Shave Co. is my favorite brush company because you can choose the handle, knot & loft of your brush!
Another brush I quite like is the 24mm Yaqi Barber Pole brush loaded w/a Tuxedo knot. That brush has a nice long caravel-style handle which feels great in the hand. It’s a great budget-brush, but I still prefer the AP Zen brush.
Additionally, I have the AP400 handle loaded with a G5Cset to 50mm, that’s another one of my favorites.
So, my personal recommendation would be a Zen handle loaded w/a G5A, B or C, (they’re all great)! If you prefer fan-shaped knots, maybe the G5C would be for you, the G5A is my favorite, but it’s significantly more expensive and only slightly better than the G5B, IMO. The G5B is the least expensive and dries the quickest. As I mentioned previously, any one of those knots is a great choice!

Hey James. Thank you very much for such an interesting 'in-depth' comment. I'm especially interested in your thoughts about the 5A/B/C knots. I have two brush handles on the way and will likely have to try all of these knots at some point! I'm definitely going to try the Pure Bliss knot. The Zen handle looks really good; it's a bit of a coin flip between that and the Ubrush. I also like the little Ever Ready handle😁 This could get expensive Shave with a safety razors - you'll save money, they said.😂 What a great hobby. All the best, my friend.
