I think it is, but I'm looking at it from the stand point that they could put out a quality product for less. On the other hand if you want to swap out all that stuff go for it! I also feel this bike is in another league of it's own it does compete in the same area as a DRZ400 even if the bikes are different, they'll do the same things basically one's just a little hotter (powerful/nimble) than the other. So my question is; Is it really worth all the extra money? Not racing here but maybe you pick the model that's less maintenance, but just for fun go your own way! Right?

Overkill if you work for a living. Especially for a bike that requires so much maintenance. It makes sense if you are a sponsored professional rider.

you could save a lot with a different ecu option, right? Go with EJK, new exhaust cap and a new seat, along with maybe the bigger tank and you should be pretty good for a grand.

70 year old rider here. Have a 24 FE350s that I love. Have TM tidy tail, etc. installed and am tinkering with the sag. I have on order a TM Get ECU. After watching your vid I will probably opt to have Tacomoto respiring and valve the forks. Like you I like to as much work on it as I can. Thx for the great review.

If you add 2 rim locks per wheel you can balance them out and also gives you the ability to run seriously low pressures without losing the bead. I did this on my DR for extremely soft sand riding and I was able to lower pressures to 5psi no problem. Allowed me to get through places that 450's were unable to traverse.

Have a 22 fe501, no S. Engine built, suspension done. Mine is 100% off road. I am 265lbs. It carries me around much better than a 450. Pulls way harder than any stock 450. It has been my dream bike.

Well done your build is first class, done right. All the parts you purchased are the correct parts for an open-checkbook build. I’ve done 2 no holds barred builds over the last 5 years, they’re fun!!
This bike is well executed 500 build

Thank you for doing this series Ian, it's the reason I'm in the patreon program. I did the Taco Moto Ultimate build with my 24 501s and it really is amazing and I would absolutely do it again. Is it for everyone....of course not but for where I am in my life it was worth every penny. I have the Taco Tower on my bike and I do have mixed emotions on it. I'm having issues with the GPSUSB power connections so I don't have nav at the moment. I've ridden in Moab, some technical stuff in Baja and in Northern Nevada sand and really didn't need the tower. I took the windscreen off when I was in Baja and did 60mile slab from Enseneda back to Tecate and didn't notice the windscreen being off the bike. When I do BDR's I'll definitely leave the tower on but for the majority of my riding I'll probably go back to stock and the Ruby lights as you have installed. I thought about the 350 also but I'm glad I did the 501, I've done enough tight technical stuff where the 501 was awesome and if I get into anymore technical riding I'd probably just get a 250 2 stroke or even a 150.

2006 Honda XR650R - pretty much stock with minor mods on suspension costing about $500, plus fuel tank upgrade $400, damper and chain guards etc ($350-ish). Almost the same as what MechX Honda Team used in Baja 1000 back in early 2000s. It’s was a different time back then…we now have so much access to premium parts that didn’t exist to average consumers. These days I find myself enjoying tinkering more than riding (Yes! I’m getting old 😅😅😅)

Out of all the things you've added onto your bike in this video... I think I am the most excited to get those tie down washers on the front suspension! 100 percent will make things soooooo much easier and faster!

Okay I didn't think I cared on these things much as 2 of my bikes have them and my main bikes I load into the truck, kinda stopped thinking about it....Just got a KTM 500 that doesn't have them and I was lost for a quick second on how to tie it down. They are this silly thing I never thought I'd care about but they are super handy.

I did a similar build on my 2016 FE 501 S. It cost far less as I was able to get the ECU remapped at the dealer for $75. With a free flowing endcap and gearing changes I was able to see 100 mph in 5th, 108 in 6th, and wheelies for days. The vibration issues persist with the long stroke 500 cc version. The 450’s are basically the same motor with a shorter stroke, and thus vibrate significantly less. To save money one can shop around and find a well farkled older model. The motors are very durable and 5-10,000 miles is just getting broken in. Despite the vibes, the 500 platform has the widest performance envelope of any dirt bike, and can be configured for any duty from Hard Enduro to Round The World. If I can have only one bike, it will be my 500. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I have this exact same bike with a lot of the same mods, including the GET ECU. That was a massive upgrade for the bike! I did have it re sprung as well which helped a lot as I am a father now. LOL. My last dirt bike was a 2009 CRF 450 so I only have that to compare to but I love the Husky, I just passed 800 miles today and can't wait to put more on. I was able to get 140 miles out of The Acerbic 2.9 tank and the gas light hadn't come on yet, id guess you Gould get at least 150-160 miles give or take. Hopefully the taco Moto fuel pump mod will be available soon. I hope to do some Moto camping trips this summer here in CO, I hope to do the COBDR too. Too many adventures and not enough time!

You should check out a Precision dampener, they mount between the bar mounts and don’t intrude on the Trail Tech.
Also, I can’t believe that Mike didn’t explain the advantages of a Rekluse, on the 500. It makes the bike so much easier to use in rough terrain.

Nice build, I have a 500 but didn't went with the full ecu. I have a piggy back EJK and I''m happy with it.
Fuel tank, seat and anti vibration bar mounts are mandatory. Then, suspensions is big money but I'm happy I did it.
There is no "problem" with those wheels. But, it is true that the spokes come loose after break in. You only have to check and torq them as a usual maintenance step.

I own a 2020 701 and like it a lot. Also own a 2024 500 and like to also. The 701weighs 80lbs more and its obvious. On the road the 701, off road it just depends on what you want to do. Easy fire roads, moderate atv trails - 701 works well. But, the 500 is easier, lighter especially in tight turns and rocky terrain. I view the 701 as a light adventure bike. I can ride it 200+ miles on tarmac and ride some off road also. The 500 is just easier when the off road gets more challenging, but on road its more challenging than the 701. lol

Great build! If going this “crazy”, I would add Aurora Superlight Kit. Then it would be top spec 👌🏻
I would go for other mirror option…
I would invest all that to 701/690 as there are not so many places that this heavier bike would not do… anyway 501 is not 250/350 bike… but you have been through that build already

Excellent video! I have a 24 501s and have loved the transformation of yours. Personally, I almost want to say that it has enough power stock! I had a built 450 prior so dare I say- I like the stock and controllable power!. So far, I have the suspension done, xl seat, tidy tail, enduro plate and am getting the first service done on it as we speak. Im torn which way to go with the tires because I want to keep it street rideable.. I hear the stock tires are terrible off road, but all the knobs ive had prior are terrible on road (imo). If you have any recommendation other than you Motaz- would you please share? I ride Tahoe- Mammoth regions predominantly. This video is literally is an ask and tell forum of the bike- so it will greatly influence which way I go with the build! Thank you, and keep up the great work!

Ruby is the new king in off-road motorcycle lighting. I have the R7 on my KTM 500 and it was worth every penny. And yes, the Scott's steering stabilizer seems impossible to get through Taco Moto. Every time I check stock they are out, it's a bummer. Huge MotoZ fan here as well but I have found the Dual Venture up front and RallZ out back to be the best combo for a dual sport like this at least for my riding style and location.

Great video Ian about a month ago I also went with GET ECU (RXI PRO) for my 2022 KTM 500EXC-F SixDays, but I got it from Rocky Mountain ATV for over a hundred dollars cheaper, and wow no more flameouts and holy cow is it powerful, wheelies with just cracking it in 3rd gear and I went up one tooth to 15 on the front sprocket and left the 48 teeth sprocket on the rear.

If you want a well prepared new FE501, it looks like $21k is the budget. An epic dirt bike with a plate for sure. There are better choices for more street focused dual sports, and there are more affordable options to consider. My personal favorite would be a Beta 430RS.

Gobs of power and light, and without equal the most vibey bike I've every owned. I've had the 690, 2022 FE501 and 350EXC, and after a year on the Husky I sold it. Took so much money to try and take the vibes out, and just was fed up with it. The 350EXC was MUCH better.

Thanks for the detailed review! I am considering turning my plated 300tpi enduro into a "dual sport" by switching to higher gearing and a comfort seat. I think it's a great bike on the road with very low vibrations and decent power, but too high strung over 45 mph. My goal is to cruise comfortably at 55 mph and still maintain a decent first gear for tight terrain. Do you recommend regular tubes if 2-3 hrs road riding at 55 is common?

My 23 KTM 500 Exc has all the same Toco Moto Goodies and their STR front disk guard. I found that clutch control is key to staying alive with all the new power espically on map 1!. To that end I am also trying the R&Duro EZ Clutch. This clutch system came at recommendaiton of many hard enduro riders. I would be keen to hear your thoughts.. and after all, what is one more upgrade at this point!! :)
And yes we are very lucky to have Taco Mike and all the hard work he does to produce great products for these bikes!

While not specific to any bike, the Alpine stare airbag system is another 1000 bucks. Most people cannot afford all of this stuff.
I have the benefit of having built a jeep rock crawler. LIft kits, suspension, permanant ball joints, drive shafts, lockers, etc etc etc...
Building your dream dual sport motorcycle is no different. Costs add up when making it what you want. I still have my KLX 300D. I have the best of both worlds. Low cost go anywhere and a 24' husky FE 501s. At some point you can always say enough is enough when doing upgrades. with few upgrades, the Husky can be a magnificient dual sport - go anywhere trail bike. Eventually, I may have all of the bling. In the meantime, I will have a super capable and fun bike with the Husky.

Instructive review. MAD TV channel from Australia made a similar build and review. On my side, living in France, I enjoy my '21 KTM 500 EXCF, which comes stock as a pure enduro bike, with 55hp and 13x50 gearing, includes 2 maps and TC. Since my riding programme is adventure on the TransEuroTrail tracks ( TET in Europe is like the BDRs in USA), I fitted 12liters Acerbis tank, larger clutch case for more engine oil, tamed the gearing to 14x50, SeatConcept XL seat. No rally tower, I had one RadeGarage on my former Husky701E, but no need on my 500 as I rarely ride over 90km/h. As I get older (now 67), I priviledge weight saving, no more AfricaTwin ( I had one when I was 60), no more 690/701 (I had one at 65). The only upgrade I hesitated about is rear wheel cush hub: I changed my chain and sproket at 10.000km/250hours , could have lasted another 2.000km.
By the way, I ride a KTM 890R for touring 😅

Good stuff as always Ian, very informative and detailed explanations. Keep it up, looking very much forward to the Honda 450L review/comparison with the KTM/Husky. I'm looking for a dual, but confused which one to buy? Honda 450L, KTM 500 or KTM 690? Do you have any thoughts on making a 690 review/long term use like the other bikes? That would be super if you did, because then we have all the "goodies" in one bag to compare with and go back and forth with until we make the choice of which one will be the hearts winner.

Another thing that kept me away from the newer models was that they made 6th gear a little shorter when the bean counters said let's use the 350s gear boxes for the 500s so they don't have to make the 500s gear box ratios anymore and we will tell everybody that the bike is lighter now, (by so many ounces), wow.

Ian, could you please tell me what the best hot weather riding pants are? It’s extremely hot in Louisiana, with the humidity, and I need something to keep me cool. Klim claims that their Mojave pants are the most ventilated, but I’m hearing others say that the Marrakesh are better. Or, perhaps you know of something even better...

It's pretty well documented that a cush drive rear hub isn't really necessary on these bikes unless running them as a super moto or riding largely on the street. They have the same rubber dampers in the transmission as the cush drive hub itself, so while it doesn't hurt to have it it's not really necessary. The OEM wheel set is fine but I'd never balk at set of Warp9's or Woody's.

Like your reviews you do a nice job! I thought you had the 701 but maybe I'm confused! Kind of wonder where you would rank these with the DR & DRZ etc. Dual sport really is it's own category in the ADV bikes. Some are more dirt road than trail and others are more trail than dirt road and some are moto cross made street legal, so they vary a lot. I saw rear tanks for some of the Husqvarna bikes on Safari's site and maybe Acerbis but Safari wanted an arm and a leg for that little tank, and it looks like a cheap overflow bottle from an auto store!
