So as I read the comments, I’m picking up that they use absolutely no production or mixing/mastering of their music. If this is true, that is insane because the quality of their sound/ music sounds studio quality. Thank you for giving me a heads up and a background on this wonderful group and thank you for accepting me reacting to them. Plan on plenty more in the future guys!!
    Much Love,
    Cliff

No production over the "normal" reverb etc which all singers use. To prove how good they are, check out (for your own info - no need to react) Daft Punk th-cam.com/video/vz4CFeWBiEQ/w-d-xo.html live on stage starting about 1 minute in, and th-cam.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/w-d-xo.html which is a VIP/Green Room video WITHOUT MIC's!!!

@Cliff Beats I've been Subscribe for awhile it's cool your getting to them because of your music background your going to love the way they mix songs.. since you write...ya man no instrument production at all except the songs Kevin whose the beat boxer plays cello which he's classically trained.... The 3 main singers Scott, Mitch ,and Kirsty went to the same high school witch makes it crazier..

They DO use studio mixing, mastering & studio “effects (such as reverb and doubled tracks, etc).” But…they keep it minimal, and to stuff the members can replicate when they sing live. Their live versions sound VERY similar to the studio, but there are differences.
Edit to add: At the time they released this song/video, they were indie artists and very low budget. About 6 months after this, they were signed by RCA.

YESS they're all a cappella, unless you see an instrument in the video! PTX does do some standard production / editing stuff, but nothing necessarily to make them sound "better" than they actually are - they're absolutely incredible live. a bit of a concert they did is uploaded on here titled "Pentatonix popspring performance 2016" - it's about 15 minutes long and has 1.6M views. they do their original songs "Cracked" & "Can't Sleep Love" , their cover medley "Evolution of Michael Jackson" and they finish with another original song called "Water" . you can check out all the studio versions of these songs if you want, and then watch the popspring concert... you will get a very clear comparison of their studio VS their live sound. the quality of their sound is consistent in everything they do and almost inhumanly impressive. hope to see you react to more PTX in the future, definitely subscribed!!

Production? The sound was recorded in the closet of AVI's bedroom with their own sound equipment. The video was recorded in his kitchen by a brand new amateur video company. It was recorded for $400. It won them a Grammy.

They were singing 7 different songs by Daft Punk (Technologic, One More Time, ...) arranged into sort of a DJ dance club mix. Daft Punk recently retired with a weird exploding YT video. Makes sense. The blue theme is mostly from the One More Time animated video by Daft Punk.
There's not a lot of audio production on this one. They do it live.
They do one other EDM song that is just their own : Love Again. If you thought this one was weird, well ...
They also do some big blockbuster songs like Hallelujah, Sound Of Silence, Amazing Grace, Mary Did You Know and Bohemian Rhapsody.

So it's a musical piece with no instruments and no words! 😳
Make sure to use *extra* duct-tape, to keep from scattering pieces of your head all around the room!
    *Enjoy!*
P.S.- btw ... they did this whole video as a 'home production'; they didn't have a label or contract or anything yet - they'd just won 'The Sing-Off' a few months before and the prize, a recording contract? The label dropped it!

They won a Grammy for this. Made it in one of their garages for $400. More Pentatonix, please! Doesn't matter which one, they're all fantastic. Thanks for another great reaction, Cliff!

Recorded in a closet and filmed in a kitchen. At that point, they all lived in the same apartment complex and didn't have a garage. The $400 was just the shooting budget, not including post-production.

I have watched SO many people react to Pentatonix for the first time, but what I LOVED about your reaction is that you spent a longer time in utter confusion at their talent than anyone else I've seen 😂😂😂
You looked *so confused* for like the first 20 SECONDS of the song, and THEN you said "...... is this all acapella???" 😂

This is my favorite band of all time, saw them live when they were basically just starting in a concert hall with less than 500 people and have seen them perform at a sold out TD Garden. They are some of the most legit musicians on the planet and they have excellent chemistry as a band. I've been here for the HMACK reacts, but if you go on a PTX journey, ill watch all of those too.

it probably sounds familiar because they won their first Grammy for this one haha please react to basically everything they've done. a good thing to start with would be their Evolution videos: Evolution of Music, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Evolution of Rihanna. those are all shot in one take so you can really get a sense of their raw talent with no production and there's tons of beat boxing and other stuff to react to. aside from that, some of their other produced stuff you can react to: Imagine, Havana, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, Hallelujah, Can't Hold Us, just to name a few.

Dude, I started watching you because I'm one of her "Weirdos" (Aurora) and loved your insightful reactions...
Then subscribed as a member of TWA (The Warning Army) when you found them the other day!
Now, I'm not a die-hard, avid "Pentaholic", but I love their music! The things they pull off as an acapella group is AMAZING!!! I know of these "Pentaholics", and they are truly out there...AND THEY WILL SHOW UP!!!
But you are missing one more group to totally diversify your channel, and that is "Nightwish"!
It would be remiss of me as a member of the Great Lakes Battalion, of the Nightwish Army, hailing out of the Straits of Mackinac/Mackinaw Island, Lake Huron, USA...If I did not request that you check out "Ghost Love Score"...It will call in the army and with those four rabbit holes to explore, from 4 completely different genres, you will have PLENTY of eclectic works to react to.

Their music is mixed, like for reverb, but they work hard to sell music that they can produce live every once in a while they will add cello (Kevin) piano (Scott) violin (visiting artist.) They clarify when this is happening. Another example is autotune is used a few times in the '90s dance song in tribute to original artist (like Cher.) Solo work and a few songs have vocal layering in the mix, but Pentatonix does that too. Welcome to PTX, enjoy.

If you thought this was good (I looked on your channel & didn't see it) one that's a MUST see by anyone who appreciates music is the LIVE fan shot "Aha! Live from the Star Vista, Singapore" The choral intro so Kevin can put his cello away & have time to join them before Aha! begins & their harmonies will chill ya' to the core... The distorted mic & speakers that can't even handle what Avi's slinging.... to Mitch... wow, insane! The beatboxing/percussion, nuts. Timing, pitch, syncopation.. from any artist, ANY performance... tops the list of anything I've ever heard. Get yourself ready tho... the lows of the lows, highest of the highs, the sass & full body chills will be incoming like crazy!!! You'll definitely listen more than once, it's a MUST experience imho!

Check out their "Evolution of..." videos. Or their live videos of their songs. They are primarily a capella and pride themselves with being able to sing/perform all of their songs live with little to no difference. When they do use instruments, you will see those instruments right up front.
They have won 3 Grammys so far, this one being their 1st. Up until 2017, the bass and original member was Avi Kaplan. He decided to leave the group for personal reasons and was replaced by Matt Sallee. That has been the only change to the group since 2011.

  • @missedbirch33

You should watch them on the show where they were discovered. I am pretty sure it was called The Sing Off. It is a totally acapella contest. Its pretty cool to watch their development throughout the show and what the judges have to say about them.
ALSO they sound just like this LIVE.
