I really appreciate Brandon’s camera reviews. Can you get Brandon and his team create a series of videos on the main channel explaining some of the technicalities and good camera (photo and video) techniques for us novices? @@Artemis-v8i Just shove it in to google and work it out in square mm or even better look at somewhere like DPreview.
      This nugget has a sensor that is 13.2 x 8.8mm or 116.2mm2,
Out of interest a full frame sensor is 36×24mm or 864mm2 and an iphone max 14 the main sensor is 11.4 x 8.4mm or 95.8mm2 and the front facing sensor is 5.5x4mm or 22mm2
The smaller the sensor is the worse the picture often turns out to be, all things being equal and in this case the Sony camera is one small step better than the iPhone 14 max's main camera without the rather clever image processing within the iPhone.
Note in their direct comparison they only use the example as a camera to take vloging video with the front facing camera on the iPhone, hardly a fair comparison on the basis of a camera for stills, as is the first premise of the review.
I normally expect better from LTT and to my nose it has more than a faint wiff to it.

I think the autofocus worked just about as intended for static situations. It keeps trying to keep the person in focus at all costs and if you place something in the middle of the frame it focuses on that pretty fast and then as you take it away it goes back to the person pretty fast. It makes sense to keep trying to focus on the person if the object you place in front of it is somewhat to one side of the frame which it was when Brandon was saying it's hunting.

    • @Adroit1911

  • @MaethorDerien
    @MaethorDerien 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

I will be honest most of the time the iphone 14 looked better. The problem with the zv was the constant focusing was distracting. While I do think the bokeh looked way better when it properly focused on you the moving scenes had a lot of trouble and just were distracting with the autofocus. Not to mention the lack of decent stabilization if any on it. Pretty much I think for any kind of moving content the iphone easily beats it.
That said when you did anything without motion I do think it looked very good. I think with a tripod set up it would work really well. I think for me the issue is the price. At 500 dollars your getting really close to the price of some much nicer mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses for not a whole lot more that are going to be a lot more flexible and better for fixed tripod shooting. I mean yeah it beats anything at that price class but when you bump up just a few hundred dollars more there are way better options. Now if the AF and stabilization while you were moving was better I do think it would be amazing but losing to the iphone in the movement shots was pretty bad.

Pro consumer tip.. Skip a "first" camera and just get the best one you can afford. I've always skipped the "firsts", "beginner", or lower tier product lines because I feel it's a waste. You're probably gonna buy the better one sooner than you think, so save the hassle of reselling at a loss, and go as big as you can. If the budget is there, of course.

However, I do see your point if they are student of media centric industry and need to use their camera professionally. Just go straight to the pro camera that have all the feature set. If they are on a budget, there's nothing wrong in buying a used professional camera.

For all the negative (and deserved) baggage that "digital zoom" has, the idea of using a wide angle prime lens with a high resolution sensor, then selectively using full vs crop frame to give you a "zoom" function has a lot of merit. I do something similar with my Nikon Z that lets you shoot 4k at full frame or crop sensor, and assigned that setting to a button to act as a "zoom" with little to no downside. It doesn't give you in between options, but still a nice bonus for shooting video on a mirrorless system

If this is the only usecase, maybe look into 2nd hand full frame DSLR's. Something like a Nikon D800. For shooting stars, you want the bigger sensor to capture as much light as possible. At the same time, you don't need features like quick auto focus of burst shooting - things that new camera's are very good at. So you will be totally happy with some older high end gear.

Contrast based autofocus is a dealbreaker. It is not 2014 anymore, come on, Sony!
UPD. Lol, the amount of fanboys high in copium in the comments... Apple has phase detection autofocus(PDAF) since iPhone 6. It is not like the greatest and latest technology anymore, so $430 iPhone SE has PDAF (Apple calls it "focus pixels"). It costs nothing to Apple to put PDAF even in their budget phones, same applies to Sony, since they're clearly recycling same sensor again and again. Spending $500 on a dedicated videocamera in 2022, which does not have basic functionality available even in budget phones = wasting your money.
UPD2. In 2019 DJI brought phase detect autofocus to their $350 Osmo Pocket by firmware update. Sensor already had necessary subpixels for phase detect, just firmware was not ready for release date. ZV-1F has same sensor from RX100m5-m7 and ZV-1, which has subpixels for phase detect. But Sony clearly removed PDAF from ZV-1F for the sake of market segmentation.
UPD3. Changed 2016 to 2014, since it is the last time Sony released camera with contrast based autofocus - RX100M3.

You could see the camera actively trying to blur the background as Brandon was walking around and recording. At that point, just don't turn it on lol Let it record naturally and you can blur in post processing. Nice if you're live streaming, but if it can't live stream, then I don't see the point in the camera actively wasting battery and processing on trying to blur the background. That's the one place I feel phone software still beats camera software, save for Leica: better natural bokeh effect. Maybe it's hardware, but I tend to think it's software just because Leica does such a great job at it.
