My favorite of all of Angelina's Christmas songs! It is an absolute masterpiece performance from an 11 year old Angelina. There are so many little nuances in her voice on this one, and it just pulls you right into the story she is telling. This is not the type of song/music I would typically listen to, but (as she often does) Angelina has broadened my musical horizons, and this is one I must listen to many times every holiday season. It's just beautiful.

I had not heard this one before. It's captivating. While listening, it was reminding me SO much of the way Elvis used his voice in his slow, sweet, intimate mode.

I have always been dreadful of this time of the year, listening x-massy songs over the radios non-stop. sick of it. but I would listen to AJ's Mary's Boy Child anytime of the year. Does not seem just plain singing. I feel like watching a movie. or listening to a story being told with crackling fire in the fireplace.

I haven't heard this song since I was a kid! Sonny James or somebody like that did it. I like the way she softened the edges on it. Always a little surprise in everything she does!

Jennifer, I greatly enjoyed your analysis for this beautiful performance by Angelina. I agree that this performance, like most from Angelina, are other-worldly.
As one of the great musicians that accompanied Angelina in her Christmas concert yesterday said, she is a rare gem in her ability to tell a story through her music, and that is so true. We just get taken to another place when she sings and are just mesmerized by her vocals. Thank you Jennifer for the wonderful reaction/comments and analysis. Really enjoy watching and listening to Vocal coaches and singers like yourself who definitely understand what they are hearing her with this young lady, though still a child of 11 in this one. I always default in my rational brain to attempting to figure out how Angelina is able to do what she does, including telling the story of a song so well that often you hear it for the first time. I'm sure it's many things but I think she has an extraordinary ability to be fully present and conscious/aware as she sings which results in her being able to make each line, word and note special, to improvise with no hint of nerves or rushing. She is in touch with the music in a way few artists achieve. It is wonderful to listen to, and as always, words fail to do it justice.

A few random comments: the maturity we’ve heard in Angelina’s voice and delivery is showcased in this song. Can this really be an 11 year old giving us this beautifully nuanced performance? Also, we don’t really think of a raspy voice giving us this type of religious song, but this is so genuine and authentic. When she goes low and leans into the word “evermore” in the choruses, it’s both chilling and uplifting at the same time. This also showcases how Angelina has the musical instinct to not mess with the simplicity of this song. But the life she gives this song with her delivery and vocal choices can best be described as angelic. Or maybe Angelic?
I was brought to tears with the last song, "You Say". Oh my god, the feeling, the words remarkable! Angelina is all we ever hoped she would be, and more.

This song is a wonderful classic and with Angelina it's always a pleasure to listen to it again, this version of her at only 11 years and professionally recorded at NRK radio. It's absolutely fantastic to hear her voice calm, slowed down, smoky and with a sweetness that it leaves you stunned. She is simply and incredibly adorable. Here you can feel the sweet sensitivity of a little girl talking about the birth of another child. 💛 🧡 ❤️

I think you are wonderful and please what I'm about to say is not criticism in any way. I believe you have really come around full circle to realize Angelina is someone very special. I think you now understand everything she does is intentional and, my goodness, listening to you describe her performance with this song touched you very much and, Jennifer, that's what she does. As the song went along you seemed to be thinking to yourself, "My goodness, she is so wonderful and she is telling us the story so beautifully!"

I believe that Angelina in addition to being the queen of Jazz, the Persian princess of bare feet, is the greatest storyteller in existence today.
Yesterday honored in her online concert of hers by some great musicians who have played for legends of the past century.
You have all the potential to revolutionize the art not only the musical one of this century.
You can you can hear that the arrangement Angelina chooses is patterned after the 1957 version by Harry Belafonte, although she puts more intimate emotion into it.

An 11year old angel singing about her maker,,,, can't get any better than this. Fun fact ,,, this was being sung for a radio station I think in Norway
She had a Christmas Concert yesterday that was spectacular. I understand it will be available through the end of the year instead of for only 1 day. I assume you might still be able to buy a $29 US ticket to watch it. Her band for it was legendary musicians who have played for the best in the business & they were totally blown away by her amazing talent.

Compliments of the Season! Some people have a brain that must be pre-wired for music. Add in a body that is suited to singing, a little exposure to songs and top off with practice and you have AJ. Take away any one part and you may still have a good singer but not world class.Me. I lack most of it and I'm blessed with a voice that is outlawed under the Genever Convention.

We know that Angelina could sing those notes in a nice clear tone if that was what she wanted, but those little breaks, rasps and vocal fry all add to the emotion she wants to express. She borders on genius the way she makes the choices to do those.

I do not know of another female vocalist Angelina’s age that has Angelina’s lower register.
Angelina's Christmas Concert that aired yesterday and is available through the 31 of Dec, with the quality and history of musicians that were involved, it shows how much Republic Records believes in, and are willing to invest in’ our Angelina Jordan’s unbelievable talent. She is one of the greatest talents the world has experienced, and we got to watch it happen.
Hope your Christmas was full of joy and happiness. Angelina is a musician who is working hard at finding "her" voice. Just as a visual artist uses the influence of the great masters to work out their painting technique, Angelina uses the old musical artists such as Sarah Vaugh, Billie Holliday and even Elvis to help her find the bits and pieces which will ultimately make up her uniqueness. I find your insights to be the clearest and right on the money.

Yes for everyone saying they heard Elvis, is correct since Angelina was very young she's been emulating what she hears and likes she goes thru phases where she'll copy and artist so she actually mimics there style not just the words of a song this was done in her Elvis phase she did quite a few Elvis covers this being one of them. When she covers an artist she does in there style not just as they would but in there style but how she would do it ,if that make any sense.
Angelina's views on her official site just went from 629,000 to 632,00 since her Christmas Concert, and her magnificent singing that opened the movie :THE HATING GAME". She is definetly a Rising Star for Republic Records.

I appreciate your analysis here based on the "voice as an instrument" premise (and boy oh boy, does Angelina know how to play it)! If you were to chart it somehow, it seems that she adds effects or touches to more than half of her notes (all without them becoming cloudy or "too much"). Merry Christmas!!

Angelina is indeed a unique storyteller and master painter with her voice. But when it comes to christmas concerts and grandeur events is there no one else than Norway's best known singer for decades ....which is Sissel Kyrkjebø. She has "done it all". She has the most heavenly and crystal clear voice of all. She has sung with the greatest masters within opera, she has been vocalist in front of the Tabernacle Choir and was singing the hymn in the movie "Titanic". There is only one Sissel on YT ...so check her out.

Well, it is Dec. 27th, the third day of Christmas. The 3 Kings or sidemen will not make Bethlehem until the 6th of Jan. The 12th day of Christmas. As so I understand it. Merry Christmas.
She'll never sing that song so beautifully again. Her voice has matured so much since she was 11 . Now at 16, still a great voice but changed . I miss younger Angelina already. She's beautiful now but I miss her cuteness 8-12.
