In the fall of 2021, I bought a 16'x26' pre-fabricated shed to use as a workshop and for office space. I decided to DIY as much of the interior finishing myself. It's been VERY slow-going, but it's been a fun experience, and educational as well! In this video, I'll show you how to insulate a shed using Rockwool insulation (which requires a vapor barrier), along with how to attach the vapor barrier. I also address how I added ventilation in my shed to prevent mold and mildew!

The insulation and vapor barrier installation is very good. As a licensed contractor i can tell that you are very detailed with ensuring the thermal barrier protections are being installed with attention to detail and consistent with manufacturers recommendations. Also, glad to hear that you sub-out the drywall installation to mechanics who's skilled will match the level of finish you expect to have once completed. The project looks good and on schedule :-)

Wow, I appreciate this so much, Derrick!! I did my best to make sure it was done as accurately as possible! As I mentioned in the video, I probably over-stapled, but I'd much rather too many staples and tape than not enough. I appreciate knowing that I did it well! ❤️ Thank you!!

I just had a shed built and I’m doing the insulation and wall finishing next. I installed a ac unit but I’m confused on the ventilation? How do I ventilate with a AC unit without losing my cold air but getting airflow?

Serena-I do not like installing insulation either. BUT, it is my job whenever my husband and I do a project and we seem to do a lot of projects requiring insulation! I think you did a very professional job of insulating and putting up the vapor barrier-very neat! Many of the jobs I do with my husband take longer than I think they should, BUT he is a perfectionist. If I ever get a chance to have a she-shed, I will have someone else construct it, with me doing as much as I can. You are trully AMAZING!!!!

Awesome installation and it makes a difference temperature wise. I installed LED shop lights in my shed because it is used for storage and deep frying turkeys during the holidays. I used .25 inch thick sheets of plywood to cover the exposed insulation. Now all I need is a bigger shed..lol.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Good call on the plywood! I debated between drywall and plywood, for the benefit of organization and not needing to find studs for everything. For the LED lights, I can't wait to put mine in!! Mine are LEDs that can operate with an app and I can change the color of them! 😜

Great job. I insulted beneath an entire mobile home in the mountains of NC in January. One small opening to drag the insulation in piece by piece on the dirt. One of the days it snowed so keeping the insulation dry while trying to cut it was a big job. The stapler kept jamming. I never want to touch insulation again. At least I didn’t see any snakes!

I know that it will be a workshop but it will be office space, as well as recording space for some other things I want to do, like my power tools course. I also do some freelancing work for brands and I always find it hard to find bright space to record, so I would like it to serve as that, too! So many things I need from this shed. LOL. Amazing work!!! Love your work! Loved the details on the insulation, I have been looking for a video on how to insulate my shed and they really don’t show how to ventilate your shed. My shed has a ridge line on the ceiling and lots of dirt comes in thru there so I was wondering how to go about insulating the ceiling. You did an amazing job by yourself! I'm so proud of you. I've been watching you off and on for years. And I know that there are things that you give up on and or put aside for a very long time, (and don't finish). But, you are going strong and steady to finish your She Shed. This is how I know that you are serious about this space for yourself. This video was so inspiring and so emotional for me; again because I know that you are so excited about this and so looking forward to this being completed.
You are so spiritually blessed and being smart and thinking outside the box and around the corner in doing these projects for the first time. Again I am so excited for you.

Awww, thank you, Honey! You are so right that there are projects that I give up on for one reason or another. But this shed is my baby right now and it's giving me the option to see and experience the whole process from start to finish, so it's been fun! I am so happy to hear that my excitement is spilling through to you via the screen! I swear I need to have a virtual shed-warming party once everything is done!! I'm serious. Do a "LIVE" and plan a fun event in the shed to break it in!

Although the drywall is easy to do on the walls, the ceiling and especially the skylights would have been a challenge. Good call having the professionals come in for the drywall and finishing, they have already gone through the learning curve process and you don't have to deal with all of that mess.

I have a 12x20 shed with a residential door, two windows in the front and one in the back. Roof has a ridge vent. I installed the baffles(black) and drilled the holes in the wall before installing them and the insulation. I added three vents in the front, but haven’t done the back yet. I just saw your video on ventilation so I need to find ones with screens in them. I live in Northern Ga and the temp has dropped recently. I have condensation in all my windows a d a little confused why. They aren’t double pane windows, just the basic stock from Tuff Shed. I figured the condensation was the difference of inside/outside air si I got a oil filled heatwr and have the shed at a constant 70deg, but still have condensation. I am putting a Minisplit in Monday. Just worried a out the condensation issue. Have you seen this with your shed?

Found both the ventilation and insulation videos today and that's exactly what I'm needing to do. I've been slowly building my 16'x24' workshop shed from the ground up and now need to think ahead for these two things. I have a slant style low pitch roof so ridge vent isn't an option for me. For venting I was thinking the hardie vented soffit since I haven't gotten to soffit yet but unsure what the exhaust venting should be. Saw one video where they did the 2" vent plugs on the low end and the high end but wondering if that's enough air flow. Maybe a roof turbine or roof cap vent?As for insulation I used the LP Smartside with radiant barrier for the walls along with the techshield osb for the roof like yours. I did not use house wrap between the siding and framing though. Any thoughts as to direction? I was leaning towards foam board insulation so I can maintain the required air gap for the radiant barrier. I'm getting conflicting info on whether or not I will need to add plastic over the insulation or not based on not having house wrap. My shed will also be cooled and heated. Any insights you have a greatly appreciated. Definitely a new subscriber after today!

How’s the venting coming along? Is it doing the job? Looking around for answers on how to do it and this seems like the most straight forward answer.

Great video. Very detailed. One suggestion: A lot of my trade buddies said they put on a thicker layer of lotion to areas of their skin. It gives you a cover over your pores so the insulation doesn't make you itch. Have you tried that yet?

Yesss, it's very good! I would agreed with reviews that say it's crumbly, so you have to be carefully with it. The R-15 was more dense, but the R-30 was very crumbly. But it's a good product!!

Girrrrrl, they have 3-4 dudes holding up the ceiling drywall! I would have rented a drywall lift, but it would have been very slow and tedious. So glad I hired that out!!! I think they'll be here tomorrow to do the sanding. Primer and paint coming!

I have another idea to insulate your shed. Go get carpet padding, and a box of 20 mule team borax, and a cattle panel. Put the cattle panel on some sawhorses, lay the padding on the cattle panel, sprinkle with borax, spray with a garden hose and let it dry. This keeps out bugs and it costs a lot less than the regular insulation at the big box stores. And it keeps the carpet padding out of the landfill!😁

I am still trying to complete my shed. Given that professional help is so hard to find (electrical), progress has been slow. I have a question about my shed wall. The builders did not put paper on the inside of my shed walls. What should I put on my shed walls before putting insulation on? I also plan to use Rockwood Comfortbatt.

How many 2in soffit vents did you install? I have a 12X16 Tuff Shed. I got three vents in the front, haven't got the back done yet but having a lot of condensation on the windows. It has a ridge vent on the roof.

Thank you for all the Tuff shed videos. I'm doing a half shed / half home office build soon and these have all been a huge help in making things easier.
Initially I was going to get a 12x16 shed, but the space I have allows larger so I'll be going with a 15x16 instead. Good and done I thought. However, my initial plan was to do a 12x16 Premiere Pro Ranch with a lofted area on one side, but going with the larger width changes the roof structure and removes the ability for a roof loft so I'm back to the infinite drawing board of options and decisions.
Do you know how much extra it was to go with the Scissor trusses on yours? It doesn't look like that'll give any room for a loft either but It looks like I should be able to put an extra shelf upper on the wall to utilize the extra room.
    Thank you!

I looked through your previous videos but don't think you ever mentioned it. What roof pitch is this on your shed? It looks like a good amount of extra room and if going with scissor trusses.

For what it’s worth, my contractor in the Pacific Northwest said a 2mm plastic barrier is plenty and recommended it.
