I bought my stepdad a DVD player for Christmas this year. He's in his 70s and has a smart TV, normally he's pretty fine with it but with his health problems now he can struggle operating it, forgetting which streaming services he's subscribed to, which email account he registered it to, etc. He's so happy now that he can just put in a DVD and watch one of his favourite movies any time without me being there to help him. And because he has the physical media he'll never have to worry about a movie changing platforms or if it's the internet's a bit wobbly (EE are rubbish...)

The thing about digital medial is that it’s never really yours. Yes, you have access to it. However, they can remove that film from the platform any time they like. If you buy the film on dvd, it’s yours forever. I bought my dad Murphy’s War on dvd, I don’t think that’s even ever been on a digital platform.

We had to create a smart tv account and it took an hour trying to getting the thing to work. No instructions but did eventually manage to get freeview on it. I started renting videos in 1980 and went on into the DVD era. I was a member of umpteen local video rental shops, and looked forward to Friday when I would pick a couple of films after carefully browsing the shelves. As well as dedicated shops, quite a few corner stores started to rent films and it helped their income. Apart from YT I don't stream anything and prefer my very large collection of VHS and DVD, built up over decades. I am glad the shop in the video is doing well and hope that more will open. There was just something about going to a shop and picking a video that streaming can never replicate.

Most people don't realise how much information is being left out whilst streaming. For me, movies only come alive when watching on discs.
Even though one is able to stream stereo music in Lossless quality unfortunately when it comes to movie watching unless one invests in expensive equipment streaming movies are not going to be able to be heard as the way the director intended.
Lossless audio (discs) is a faithful copy of the original audio, with no degradational compression. It offers a richer sound experience then it's streaming counterpart.
    Hence, physical media rules

Next time you visit the UK, you are planning to drive a couple hundred miles into rural Suffolk to go to a specific old DVD shop? Because of this video?

If you truly visit this shop, you need to know that UK/EU DVDs are a different format to NA/US. To play them, you will need to get a player that specifically reads them. I have separate external DVD drives for my laptop so I can watch disks from both regions.

Indecent Proposal had that beautiful Lisa Stansfield song: In all the right places. A European techno band called Majority came out with its own dance version. The excitement of going out to rent videos can never be replaced by streaming services. Those were the days.

I can understand why - having subscriptions to most of the streaming channels (for the children) my daughter attempted to find The Grinch; thinking it would be included. No. We can buy or rent it; having disposed of our DVDs years ago 😂 🤦‍♂️

There's something to physical media for collectors, the experience of going to a shop and browsing for titles and the community aspect of speaking to people. I hope the shop continues to thrive as others have said, and we begin to see a revival of shops selling music, movies and video games.

Cancelled ALL my stream sites a year ago. Netflix, Disney, Amazon all gone. Now I hear they do adverts on them?? What a joke
Plus the garbage netflix puts out is unreal. I usually grab a dvd from a charity shop and donate it back when I’ve watched it.

I love this ❤️ I get streaming is convenient, but the excitement of going to Blockbuster's on a Friday or Saturday night just isn't the same on a streaming platform. Makes me a little sad my 3 year old daughter doesn't get to feel what we did when we were younger.
