Rule 1: No cheating
Rule 2: No spawncamping

Rule 4: No teaming
Cheating: Use other team color's as your own

Those rules about not shooting medics or temporary medics don't work in Ukraine, on either side. They drone each other while the wounded or dead are being carried.
Imagine the aftermath from the geneva convention
Is it really a Rule or Law when it cannot be enforced? Like how the UN cannot enforce anything if a Strong Nation says no?
@@Drekken-ow4kn Given Ukraine is fighting for their very existence as a nation and people against a fascist, imperialistic invader, I'd say they're justified in any and all acts taken against Russia.
@stridingwombat9780 so you could say the same about Palestinians, that have been systematically ethnically cleansed and now being exterminated by a fascist ethno-supremacist apartheid regime illegally occupying and settling on their territories, but instead, the occupier is "allowed" to commit literally everything on this list TIMES 1000, especially in gaza in the last 2 months, and now israeli "soldiers" are just shooting and executing civilians waving white flags (recently woman and children, some newborn babies, sheltering in a school) and they even "accidentally" executed 3 hostages that had makeshift white flags, but i'm sure that there will be some double standard applied.
@@NorthernNorthdude91749to avoid getting into a debate let's just say both sides are guilty of something and leave it at that.
The thing about the "rules of war" is they only matter when both sides believe in them and follow them. Everything is fair in war as the law has no bearing on the drive to survive and when it comes down to the bottom line people will do ANYTHING to survive.
Remember, only the lost get convicted of war crimes
hi
"Surviving" is one thing, massacring civilians or blowing up medics or journalists has nothing to do with surviving, and there is a human consensus about morality, even in times of war, any nation who believes they are exempt are criminal and terrorist states.
That isn't true. It does matter, even when only one side follows the rules. Look at Iraq and Afghanistan. We (I'm a veteran) were there and as my regimental commander put it (H.R. McMaster), we are fighting over a commodity, and the commodity is people. We get them on our side by treating them with respect. They try to get them by using fear. Along with that, is the international community is watching us. If we obey the rules, and they don't, other nations are more willing to help us. If we break the rules, the international community will not help us. You can't argue about being on the morale high ground while at the same time breaking the rules of war.
What the point of signing the treaty since all side r not going to abide by it?
Every military: "We follow the rules, honest as they are a guide."

"All soldiers must obey"
Haha, that's a good one.
You can't find a war, without these rules being broken. by all sides.
Which is the exception that proves there are no rules.
theres alot of war crimes that are swept under the rug an old guy from my job was a veteran and he told me they abuse these rules anyway. He told me that you arent supposed to use anti tank guns on people because the rule says it can only be used on equipment, this dude told me their sergeants say aim for their tool belts to kill them because they are considered equipment.
"Collateral Damage" was our instructors buzz word. The use of anti-material projectiles on soldiers is strictly prohibited but if they are standing in front of "said equipment" then they became collateral damage.
yeah, I’ve heard that too.
Similar rule goes for a weapon the US military created a while back and actually deployed in Iraq. It broke the Geneva Convention because it was violated some weird law about explosive munitions that could penetrate the body or something weird.
Honestly, it sounded like a stupid Geneva guideline as you can blow someone up with a grenade, but blowing someone up using the firearm violated the Geneva Convention.
It's not an argument for rules to not exist, but All of the rules of war have pretty much been broken in every war. Since policing is always done by the victor, it's by nature of selective. The whole system seems ridiculous.
Maybe but I think that the rules encourage understanding and cooperation. For example, gas wasn’t used in WW2 even though the war was filled with countries that had no regard for human rights or the conventions.
Policing is done by the victor?
If both sides are at war, both sides need to police their own forces, when there is a victor, there is no more policing of soldiers necessary..
„There will always be crime, so why bother having laws“
And no, countries, at least the not-crappy ones, do enforce the rules of war to at least some extent. Having them also helps foster social and institutional norms that make armies less likely to engage in atrocities.
To the ignorant it seems ridiculous, because they do not realize that without some basic rules, every single war would turn into biological, chemical and nuclear warfare with full on terrorist divisions as long as either side has access to such weapons.
@ryrygoogoo Don't quote me on this, but I believe Hitler, a WW1 vet, had an extreme aversion to gas, given what he saw and experienced in the trenches. He knew that if Germans would use gas, the Allies would retaliate with the same.

I imagine the conventions get quite messy when a country invades a country with an armed civillian populace.
yup the civilian population of that country suffers horrendously
Invading side issues a decree of confiscation of civilian weapons, its that easy
It gets extra messy when the country committing the war crimes is either the US or a US ally cause the US is too powerful to receive consequences and it extends that protection to allies no matter what their crimes. They have veto power so even if every other country agrees its a war crime they can just veto any resolutions.

I think the hollow point is more needed for when on ships or submarines to prevent sinking if used to defend ship but not sure what other uses would warrant a hollowpoint in war vs regular bullets.
They have high stopping power as they generally create a larger wound with their higher surface area. You're more likely to get a hollow point lodged inside you or have it move around internally before exiting.
Pointed rounds are far more likely to penetrate in a roughly straight trajectory. So if your goal was maximum damage, it would make sense.

My friend was a PJ in the USAF during the Vietnam War. He said the Viet Cong used the red cross on his helmet for a target.
1:50 there's a layering issue between the second soldier's hat/helmet thing and the bottom half of the third enemy soldier.
medics - A medic carrying out or seen to be carrying out offensive actions was considered a viable target. this means a medic seen in an assault, firing their weapon, could be targeted and shot. This is something that got the US in trouble a few times, as some medics would run up "firing" on an enemy position while trying to reach a downed soldier.
ambulances, medical ships, and hosptials may NOT be used for offensive operations, may not stockpile arms, and may not be used for the transfer of active weapons or personal. - UK pulled this bs in both ww1 and ww2. they didn't like that a medical ship would carry wounded back to england, then head back to europe empty... so they decided, lets just load it with meds and soldiers and send it back full.
This stripped not just that ship but any ship of that nation of protections as any could be carrying supplies and combat personal on offensive operations.
This issue came up with red cross, as without telling the red cross, one country smuggled spy devises in via red cross packages, including a radio hidden inside a cross. This pissed the red cross off because it removed the neutrality of their entire agency.

27:10 this rule goes if i've got it right, One may not use exploding bullet or another direct fire explosive against human being directly. how ever hand grenade like many other grenades does not fill this direct fire category. explosive large caliber ammunition against vehicles is allowed such as anti-aircraft and anti-armour (or anti-tank)
It's the matter of application.
An "exploding bullet", or, more commonly, expanding one, requires hitting the target enemy in the same way as with a normal bullet, so it doesn't provide an advantage for hitting the target. If a soldier is hit, and their armor is pierced, they are most probably down and out of combat, even without the use of banned ammo types - so it doesn't give any benefit of eliminating a threat over normal ammo, either.
Now, grenades and cannons have the advantages of ability to be applied where firearms can't reach the targets, as well as the ability to hit multiple targets. They are a completely different category than firearm ammo.
Geneva Convention isn't about fighting fair. If you mortar enemy squad to oblivion, you are smart. If you shoot them with hollow-point ammo, you are needlessly cruel. (and you are, frankly, putting yourself at disadvantage, as hollow-point ammo has bigger trouble piercing through cover and armor)

Most of those rules are like "ok, go on and try to prove it".
People in the comments (and common people) need to understand that questioning and undermining the importance of the Geneva conventions and the HL doesn't help anywhere. Yes sure most of the times the law doesnt get respected and there arent proportional repercussions but the amount of lives that have been saved and helped by the ICRC is immense. There are actual people out there on the conflict zones that risk their lives so they can help both combatants and non-combatants, yeah the media won't show it because a hospital getting bombed on a front page sells more than 1000 people getting food and water on a daily basis so that they can keep on living. What about the times when IHL actually worked? What about the guns that have been banned (dum dum bullets, tear gas, mines carefully demarcated etc.) ? It's so easy to question something that doesnt properly work inside your peaceful little neighborhood, but a step to the right direction demands reinforcement and expansion of the humanitarian law, because it CAN work and we have seen it many times.
PS. Keep in mind that it's a fairly new law that started on the Battle of Solferino, only on 1864. Urban law still doesn't work well enough and it is centuries old.

Mine signs are great, it keeps people from being cute. Mines or not.
That's the point, you pretty much force the enemy to either commit to finding and disarming the mines, which wastes valuable time, giving your end breathing room to plan a defence or counter offensive OR if they simply use the designated path, you herd them where you expect them to be and can ambush or be ready for an assault from that front.
