      I was looking for European cabovers in the video. Where are? Freightliner Argosy it's not European. In the 80's Scania sold some trucks in Usa, cabovers and conventionals, there is still a dealer in NJ; Areu Truck Service, in Canada there are a bunch of Scania V8 both 143 series and 144 series, all 6x4 tractors that were used in Europe for oversize loads and I think there are still some Volvo FH 16-520, straight 6, 16 liter 520hp that were tested by a canadian firm. Import of new trucks from Europe is forbidden by the American law. You can roll with only if is an used truck and it's more than 20 years age.       Freightliner, was building those. Years ago, at one of there manufacturing plants in South Carolina and shipping them off over seas. I remember, because, I used to deliver parts to them back in 2012. They used to test drive a complete build across there yard , as I was on the premises. There steering wheel was on the right, which was interesting. The gaurd at the gaurd shack revealed, they were being specially build for over seas. They originally came from here.

    While the normal US trucks look nice I've never really understood the dislike of cabovers; the visibility out of a European truck is 10 times better than a bull nose; and before anyone says otherwise I've driven both.

      I'm guessing since you driven both you know that the U.S has Cab Over trucks. Well most of the stigma was from when cab overs were introduced to the U.S market in the 70's-80's, these were not the modern trucks Europe has, but rather just flat front versions of the stock truck design. They were nice to look at but the ride quality was dismal at best, truckers hated them.
      Now a days, most truckers buy engine forward trucks for tradition, styling, and other stuff, plus their more prolific and allow for more living space, but that doesn't mean we don't see the occasional European truck here as well, I see them from time to time, while their nice, just don't have the same appeal honestly.

    I drove the cabovers in the early 90's. the "real men" hated them, the smart ones loved them. highly maneuverable, great ride.

    Argosy’s are everywhere here in Australia. The plus for them is the room inside the cab and turning circle, and you can fit a 34 pallet B Double behind them and not get harassed by transport department. Down side is inside the cabin falls apart on our roads, the fold out stairs shit themselves after a few years and the cables for the gear stick need replacing regularly. Personally I hated them, the drivers seat is uncomfortable and pissed me off, all the rattling inside the cab and especially the dash.

    Argosy’s was Freightliner’s last cab over in the U. S. Before all the truck manufacturers stopped producing cabovers for the U.S. market. They where common to see back when we ran cabovers here.

      @@benkok02 Freightliner simply doesn't make the Argosy any more, and has not for three years. Why would a trailer dealer sell new trucks? If these are new trucks they are presumably old stock, still unsold.
      The newest Argosy's available in TruckPaper, anywhere in the USA, are 2014 models.

    If you like V-8s, Scania S770 (770 Brake HP/3700Nm~2729Ftlbs of torque. Has a killer exhaust note.

    In Australia, Kenworth still offers cabovers in the form of the K-200, in the form of 6x4, 8x4 and 10x6 variants.

    Never seen one here in Europe, maybe only with enthusiasts who imported one to Europe. US trucks are also very rare here. It´s all DAF, Iveco, Mercedes, Scania, Volvo and Renault Due to maximum allowed length for the combination it´s almost always cabover.

    I use to pull motorhomes and oversized boats with a Nissan UD cabover, that truck was Great on fuel mileage and the underlift could pick up a loaded down Peterbilt. The only thing I hated about that truck, was having to jack up the cab to put oil or anything else in it. Ohh yeah it would eat up Goodyear steering tires, like they were second hand recaps! However that was My own fault, for towing such heavy equipment with it. Good video Bruce thanks for sharing. Ohh yeah had a Mack with the twin shifter in it, I couldn't stand that freaking truck around town, but it was nice on the interstate. That freaking Freightliner is clean as they come, I'd give $125,000 as it sets right now cash money in hundred dollar bills.

    They recently stopped making them but the Argosy was fairly popular here in NZ. Not as easy to get in as the European and Japanese cab overs unless you have the swing out steps. Good trucks though
    Don't think you'd see them in Europe, same goes for the cabover Kenworth's and Internationals that are still made today.

      @@shemardavis1823 Freightliner stopped making the Argosy for the US market after 2006. From 2007 to 2020 they were export only or for gliders in the USA. In 2020 production ceased when the RHD Cascadia started production and glider sales were restricted.

    Bruce that’s not a European rig. They were produced all over the good ol USA and Canada. You can get one pretty easily if you want one. Just sayin. Lots of guys have gotten them and had the Detroit 60 Series installed. No emissions bs as you know. The boys would keep watching for sure hahaha

      @@parkerbethke They shipped some over in the 80s. The east coast has a lot more than anywhere else. I got a few friends who go on google street view to find trucks, and they have seen multiple. Usually conventional though. Some cabovers.

    When visiting the US a few years ago I was amazed that you were still driving " antique " trucks . They must be terrible in cities when you have very little forward vision .

      I had no trouble with a 245 wb pete (all that was legal in BC at the time) and a 53 foot trailer, or super B set. Some people can drive some cant. We used to ha e those horrible canovers here but every one stopped buying them. I have miles in cabovers and long petes.

    I haven't been a transport manager for 26 years, but back in the day in the UK we called them forward control and trucks with a bonnet normal control. A European idea you should import is side underrun bars on the trailers it would save a lot if lives.

      In italy we call those "paraciclisti", tha would translate roughly to "cyclist blocker" in english

      They have tried mandating front under ride guards that haven't been designed. But have not gotten far on side under ride, mostly because of the trailer length issues. The standard 53 foot North American trailer is longer than most common Euro trailers, and under ride guards are too likely to high ball it on RR crossings, backing into trunk docks, etc. If it is high enough to not catch in those kind of situations, then it was determined that it would be unlikely for cycles and pedestrians to be properly protected.
      Finally, if all of that is somehow figured out to work, all current trailers would have to be replaced or completely rebuilt because they are not structured in a way to have under ride guards securely mounted in a meaningful way, ie. actually work, without changing the frame of the trailer.

      @@johnsantoro4771 53 foot is only 16 meters, about 3 meters longer than the basic Euro trailer.
      In Finland the longest trailers are 19.3 meters and they got under ride guards.
      Trailer length is not an issue.

    Tri-State definitely has some awesome trucks. I work at a Chrome Shop in Massachusetts, and the Tri-State guys popped on by and got there trucks detailed for the Gear Jammer Truck Show, in Winchester, New Hampshire. They definitely have some absolutely clean trucks.

      I got a buddy up here in Maine, KPT LLC he has some of the nicest trucks around here without a doubt!! I’ve heard him talk about gear jammer truck show if I’m right he was on the cover once of gear jammer mag once!

    It's actually not European. What most people don't realize is that freightliner produced cabovers all the way until 2019 with the Argosy ( witch is that truck a first gen model 110) . The argosy was produced from 1999-2019. The newer gen ( witch came out in 2010) look a little different with a larger grill. You don't see to many argosy unfortunately. Even though they were produced for 20 years, not a whole of people wanted one

      Only stopped being sold here in New Zealand late last year they were an extremely popular truck especially in large fleet applications because of their low tare weight. The company i drive for has 10 or 12 still working mostly 2nd generation with c15s but have a few 1s and 3s

      Mack, Ford and a couple of others used to do cabovers too. If you don't believe me just watch the film 'Convoy' and you'll see quite a few in there.

    They were super common in thd 60s i believe, Kenworth made the K100 (i believe thats the name) Frieghtliner made the Argosy (and continued to make it until 2020 for the Australian market) its just a shame they died in the US.. they were super easy to drive

    One question that has always perplexed me, why do american trucks have so many dials on the dash, what do they do? My truck has a speedo, rev counter, fuel, temp and air pressure gauges, thats all we have on european trucks. Most of our dashboards are more like you find in a car, most manufacturers now going over to full TFT screens instead of dials.

    10:50: One explanation for this European - looking truck is that Freightliner is run by Mercedes, so it is sort of styled like a Mercedes. In Germany about 99 % of all the trucks you see on the road are cabovers. Trucks with a long hood are vintage vehicles built until 1976 or so. All the best!

Freightliner wurde damals in den 1990ern von Mercedes übernommen, als Dieter Zetsche ("Ask Dr. Z.") aus dem altbackenen deutschen Lkw - Produzenten einen Weltkonzern (Daimler - Chrysler) machen wollte, was (wie wir alle wissen) mehr oder weniger in die Hosen ging!
      Trotz des europäisch anmutenden Stylings des Fahrzeugaufbaus (vor allem der Kabine) ist der Motor des im Video vorgestellten Trucks noch ein US - Fabrikat (Detroit Diesel). Dies auch zum Erstaunen von Mr. Wilson, der damit wohl selbst nicht gerechnet hat. Was aber auch beweist, dass Dieselmotoren aus US - Produktion gut sind!

    I was a Freightliner dealership mechanic when those came out. We were told in classes that the engineers called those swing out steps "liability ladders" and didn't want to put them on, but the marketing people won the discussion.

    Cab overs makes sense in Europe since there are many country's that have fairly tight roads, so the big not turning much at all US trucks would be a pain.

      You can deive the US trucks over here, just not with a full trailerlength behind it... Max lenght for a truck and trailer is 16.5m and a combi is 18.75m

      @@waterheaterservices I haven't seen or heard about any accident of truckers here in Norway, die from an accident with there truck. The cab is build to protect the driver. I have seen accident where the cab have simply just jumped of the chassie, but the chassie was totally smashed, the driver survived in his cap, that protected him.
      In a head on accident with US truck, you always risk that freak accident, where the engine and the entire front is being pushed inside the cab, while in a european cab over, the cab will just get lose and go over it... a bit uncomfortable.
      The myth about that European truck is dangerous in an accident and all the talk about aerodynamics on a european trucks, is just a myth, that have no hold.

    I’m a truck driver of 34 years . I drove for 5 years in the US in FreightLiners and Kenworths mostly . The rest of my time I drove in UK and Europe and having experienced both types I have to say American trucks LOOK nice but suck to drive compared to 10 hours of European trucks . The ergonomics of American trucks are so dated . The only better thing on US trucks is perhaps the sleeper compartment but the cab.. no way .

    Awesome cabbie! Definitely would make a great addition to the fleet, However with that being said, you should look into one of those Super big sleepers, those would be great for creating and producing content, with all the rigs you got, it’s time to start the good ole Blue Collar trucking line. Maybe hire some drivers? You could even help out tim gentry with hauling Cleetus’s and heavy D’s equipment.

    I had an ild friend of mine that had one with a 3408 cart with 7 inch straits the same clor with a 15 double over amd 355 rears. It would run triple digits with ease loaded or empty.He was known to run at night so his handle was night train.he would drive so fast for a couple days that he would have to stop and let his log book catch up with him. That was a cool truck. You could hear him on the jakes from 5 miles away. I always knew when he was getting close to the yard. It was the exact style dash and everything it was a 1986 359 long hood with widened hood to fit the 3408 in comfortably. It was 300 wheelbase.

      They don't make a jake for the V8 Cat you may what to check your book on that one. The engine brake on the V8 worked off a oil restriction at flywheel with a hand valve right beside your handbrake valve for the trailer brake . I drove a 359 with a 3406b that had this engine brake

    Yep, in South Africa 99% of the trucks (Semi) are Cabover with very small sleeping compartments. The Freightliner Argosy is a common truck here and I have seen several of the new Scania trucks with the V8 engine, who has a beautiful exhaust sound.

    I worked for ETI (Cline Everhart) for 5 years. Really enjoyed by time there as a OTR Driver. ETI has some nice rides and the Everharts are a joy to work with in every way. One of the last old school companies.

    Instead of this folding out stair nonsense why not just put the steps in front of the front axle like they are on cab-over trucks in europe? Why is that so hard for American truck manufacturers to do? This thing is needlessly complicated and you still need gloves to get in the damned thing in bad weather.

    Yes nicely done, nice truck and with an almost similar entrance / step as the Renault Magnum in Europe, I've driven Magnums namely therefore I noticed it.
    But overall a good Cabover truck, I think it has something to it.now it's more that it looks like an Australian Cabover truck they have the same entrance as this one, very nice!!!

    The Freightliner Argosy is literally the cabover counterpart to the Century Class. Heavy Daimler design influence on those…the Argosy just had the misfortune of debuting as length restrictions were eased.
    That 3408/twin-stick 359 is pretty sweet!

    We had cabovers in the U.S. until laws were passed to allow for longer trucks. I can see the shorter length cabover would be more practical for tighter roads and areas, while the cab-behind is probably more efficient over the wide open long haul routes in the U.S. and Australia.

    That is an Argosy, it was the last model cabover designed by freightliner, and the second to last freightliner to be designed fully independent of Daimler. There were 4 generations of the Argosy, though North America only got 3(1st, 2nd, and 4th), the last glider(which was the only way to get one after 2008) rolled off the line in October 2017, the last cab for North America came off the line December of that year. I know the owner of the last cab, he has basically built a new truck under the cab, and just transplanted the powertrain onto new frame rails, cross members, and the new cab and bumper.

    You can check your fluids on a cabover engine, but doing absolutely anything else requires jacking the cab up. Which means securing everything inside the cab, or it ends up piled against the windshield…

    That was an American truck that was discontinued here in the states when the emissions equipment required to meet standards in the United States would literally not fit under the cab. They were then only used in other markets like Mexico, Europe etc.

    we use those style here in UK/europe due to length regulations. the longer USA trucks would put them over length and mean a shorter trailer would need to be used.

    I remember when JB Hunt & Schneider National was buying these Argosy trucks while everyone else was switching to conventional after the length laws got changed. I trained & started in a cabover in 92 but within a year KLLM was using the FLD's & I haven't drove one since. Later I worked at an agency temporarily & we took dozens of the Argosy's to the port to be shipped to S. America & Australia.

    The only thing worse than having to pretrip the cabover would be trying to fix whatever you find wrong. Can you tilt the cab w/o all your crap in the cab and bunk ending up on the dash or through the windshield? No thanks, I'll stick to my Pete 567.

    When I think of a Euro cab over, I think of the trailer basically flush with the cab..
