If you like the Blacktop Precision, then check out Fender's new Player Plus Meteora bass. It's basically a Blacktop Precision but with a togglable active EQ in a Meteora-style body. I have one, and I think it sounds exactly the same as the Blacktop Precision! The only downside to it is that, unlike the Blacktop, it doesn't have a passive tone control; however, you can get a similar effect if you use the 3-band EQ in active mode, or you could use a pedal of some kind if you want a tone-rolled-off sound in passive mode. As an owner of a Meteora bass, I can highly recommend it to you, especially since it's essentially the new incarnation of the Blacktop Precision you like so much!
The aesthetics of this Dolphin Grey one are *chef's kiss* . Looks awesome! Love the satin finish on the neck too. Lightweight basses are so important to me! Might have to look into this one.
I got my California blue Aerodyne Special Jazz from Sweetwater in January and it immediately became my #1 bass, followed closely by the Fender Japan Elemental and Fender Japan Jino signature basses. Fender Japan is absolutely killing it right now. Perfect spec, options, and fantastic build, finishing, and setup. I just unpack them and go. I gave slight neck adjustments to taste on the Aerodyne and Elemental, but that's not an error or defect, just a preference thing.
I think it balances great, but I'm a larger fella and I use sueded leather straps for all my basses. I never have neck-dive issues where some basses jump to the floor for others, so I'm a terrible judge/reference for this. :(
The Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass is awesome. It's a lot of bang for the buck? Mine is in chocolate burst, the Babicz bridge is awesome , I like the Aerodyne voiced pickups & the tuners are from Gotoh ( even though there's no branding on them, it was confirmed by the store I purchased it at as well as a couple of other videos I saw which is not surprising being that Fender Japan is know for using Gotoh tuners and parts on their guitars .
Agreed sir, the matte finish would really play well with the slightly carved top of this bass! I say they should be using maple for the body wood. Especially at this price point. Wouldn’t be overly heavy either due to the weight loss
Regardless of their appealing aesthetics, they are so comfortable to play (whilst standing on stage). Lightweight, even more so in conjunction with a wide strap... and the sculpted top really puts the strings out in front (like a Spector or Thumb bass). I haven't tried these new iterations, but I'm looking forward to it. I just wish they had kept the P/J configuration, smoked chrome hardware and absence of fret dots. Especially for the one Patrick is playing. Had they, I would've already bought a couple. MIJ Fenders are unrivalled.
A lot of people are saying the binding is too sharp and digs in while playing. I have not found that an issue, and like you, it is very comfortable to play. I just bought a 2012 PJ and couldn't be happier. Going to put in a Geezer PJ pickup set in.
@David Moore Nice😁👍 Did you go with the Export of Non-Export? I've got the Export (2020). Those GZRs are going to sound massive. I loaded mine with a set of Bartolini PJs, Babicz bridge and a Graphtec nut.
@@TenFalconsMusic I've got the non export model. I like where the jack is too. Just wanted to give it some time before I spent $300 on pickups. Just can't find any in Oz.
I used to go out with a girl who had one from the original run and she let me play it a few times then she put hot rails on it and that thing sounded absolutely freaking amazing with distortion i’ve always loved the flexibility of jazz basses
Ahhhh! Man, I miss my Aero! I had the all black with the Strat output. Kinda weird they tagged it a Jazz, tho. I thought whole idea was it having the best of both worlds P/J with the shaved down belly. Loved that f ing bass. Now Im bummed.
The old Aerodyne also had JJ config too! Just not as popular as PJ. And there was a P Bass Aerodyne back in the day! So basically this "new" gen of Aerodyne is nothing new apart from its new color.
It is a shame that this generation of the Aerodyne doesn't have a PJ, also the choices of color finishes, ideally they would have used black, white, sunburst and that is about it, but instead there is a weird blue, green and gray.
I bought a fender aerodyne back in like 2018 for less than $1,000 and I feel like I got ripped off then. It sounded great but it was the most fragile piece of gear I have ever owned. I feel like I could sneeze near that bass and it would somehow get a scratch or dent. The fact that they're charging nearly twice that blows my mind. Buy a Yamaha BB instead
Was that a newer model with no pickguard? maybe they have nitro finish or something? I've got an old 00's aerodyne, and it's super solid. Literally the only instrument I somehow haven't scratched at all.
I have 2 identical 2020 Aerodynes (export models). I had one wrapped in transparent film at a local auto shop. They've both seen equal amounts of gigs (abuse) and the one that isn't wrapped definitely has numerous, visible battle scars: Small dents and scratches on both the body & headstock. The wrapped one still looks pristine. Granted the wrap material has a few minor scrapes, but they definitely didn't go through and into the finish.
Great review. I wasn’t a huge fan of these when they first came out at $700 but now at double the price it seems a bit too high imo. At least fender Japan doesn’t seem to be having the qc issues the American line has been.
@@EJSjjh i guess you could be right but imo a demo doesn't contain his personal thoughts. I suppose it's closer to a demo but i was just trying to be pleasant on a video that's well made.

you're a good guy and and a cool dude 👍i really like your enthusiasm. your reviews are really well done! im getting this bass because of your review - i like fenders but was wondering about these Aerodynes. 😍🤙
It's probably just the pre-amp settings Patrick is using. Even his MIM Jazz sounds similar. Best thing is to play one and see. It looks like they're being produced in high volume, so you could probably find one in a nearby music shop. Just wish they weren't charging so much for them. I guess the same could be said of pretty much everything these days.
@@TenFalconsMusic Exactly dear friend. Anyway, I had and was playing this Aerodyne Jazz Bass with P-J configuration. It was 2007 YoP. It simply does not have Fender feel and sound. It sounds good but without even trace of personality. When I tried to sell it, potential buyers were coming with expectations to get the pure blood Fender bass, and were disappointed. I had issues selling it.
A few things make this inferior to the classic Aerodynes, imo: 1) No PJ configuration. I actually primarily use the P pickup on mine, but I like the versatility offered by the PJ setup. 2) 12" radius as opposed to 7.5". One of the biggest reasons I love my Aerodyne is the ultra-comfortable neck. I've played one of the new Aerodynes, and while the neck is still comfortable, I prefer the smaller radius. 3) If they're going to introduce new colors, I wish they'd just give us some of the colors of the non-export Japanese models. The dolphin gray in this video is a classic Aerodyne non-export color, and looks nice. But the blue and green options are hideous, imo. I also don't like any of the new Player Plus colors. I like a bright colorful bass, but the new colors just look cheap and tacky. Way too '80s influenced or something. 4) The $1400 price tag for no real improvements is pretty weak. You can get a used classic Aerodyne for $600. Heck, you can even get one of the rare non-import models shipped to you from Japan for about $800.
I mean if it's the right weight and durable, I don't see the issue with basswood. G&L uses that on some of their $2k+ basses. Don't believe the misinformation out there about different 'tonewoods' - the wood has essentially 0 impact on the sound of electric guitars and basses. And this one is painted so it's not like we're missing out on pretty woodgrain.
@@charliecarrot Some good points there and it is light but from my experience basswood tends to be more brittle than ash or alder for example. I know someone who had a basswood body and when he took the screws out of his bridge the holes looked disintegrated. I'm sure there are different qualities of basswood. I mean, instruments as expensive as the musicman bongo bass and the axis guitar are made of basswood.
