Ok, so I came across your channel, and fell in love with your kids and your humor. I have health problems that make moving to the desert a ridiculous idea, but I have started to enjoy just learning about the topics that you bring up, and the solutions you employ. Really, your channel is something that I look forward to daily, as entertainment. But I LOVED this video! I am blown away by the wealth of information, and the rabbit holes, I will inevitably fall into as a result. It there is so much good information here that I can even apply here in Texas. And I am so excited to see this first glimpse of you vision, for what you guys are doing out there. What a treat!

Thanks for the kind words! :) very excited about the opportunities out here, but the fact that they can be implemented just about anywhere is so exciting.

I too have serious health issues. I won't ever be able to employ these ideas, but I still like to learn about them and imagine how I would employ them myself if I could. I still like to dream.

That was an excellent presentation on perm-a culture 👍🏽 my dad was an environmental engineer and he used these berms and swells to natures advantage and damed up a small area in our back yard where our livestock has water to drink. Very good, thank you for sharing.

Think about using a pollard or coppice system to have firewood, tool handles, and food production over a long period of time: instead of a cut and burn sequence. With the right species you could create a silvan-forest in a pollard system to let cattle roam under for shade and harvest above them for browsing. Place this system as a series of coppice stands within your windbreak to stack functions as well as having firewood suitable for a rocket-stove forever.

I don't really know what you said but I am really impressed. Going to do some homework on it. Can you elaborate?

    • @norfcalgreens
      @norfcalgreens 2 ปีที่แล้ว

yes, i agree , they could pollard many scrubs and use them as natural fence posts , creating living wind breaks, help create shade and retain moisture. i just joined this group yesterday - i havnt seen them burn anything yet , so i dont know if they have a rocket stove. yet. was wondering if they had a way to make mortis & tenons structures/furniture .with all the small diameter wood they have in their area.. i did just watch a video about them getting/using a rocker box type washing machine. made me think back to the old gas powered hit&miss maytag wringer washer. i grew up with .

The beginning of a farm that will be similar to the biggest little farm transplanted in the desert. I can’t wait to see this come to being. Watching you start to make a home that is in touch with nature and the environment, that is working with it instead of fighting against it. I love the permaculture and regenerative agriculture. So much is changing for the better.

Thank you Johnathan and Ashley for having Rudy on: found the information quite useful; and seeing your master plans. Big changes coming to your homestead. I've seen a few of those natural swimming pools, and once there biomechanical systems take hold there awesome. Might I suggest koi fish in the pond there byproducts make good natural fertilizer, for all the plants on the homestead and garden. It made everything grow like crazy. Anyway food for thought. Take care and be safe and God bless amen.

You guys are so inspiring! Your vision and enthusiasm to share this vital information on water and land use/permaculture design. T.H. Watkins, of the Wilderness Society and a historian of the Western US, was my first teacher about water use shaping the history of the west. I was very interested, as I grew up in thirsty Southern California. It’s heartening to witness people like you working hard and building a dream not just for you six, but encouraging so many in a way forward as water becomes more scarce on a crowded planet needing teachers like you.

I love that you brought the words Regenerative Agriculture into your conversation. I know you don’t love dipping into politics but Rudy mentioned the demonization of raising animals and the concept of regenerating your soils and land with rotational concepts, to complement life in these times. Have you read the book “Sacred Cow” by Diana Rogers and Robb Wolf? It speaks to this misconstrued concept and is very supportive of what you’re doing!

THAT was fanTAStic! I knew such things were possible, I did NOT know that there were people this skilled who could work with you on the planning and design stage. I thought if it wasn’t passed down from an oldtimer who could read the land and knew what resources would become limited during certain times while others could be over abundant during key times and help you harness excess for times of drought. I have thirty questions but I will drive him to distraction and let you guys continue with your break. THANK YOU for coming out of the shade (figuratively) to make this information available to us.

This is great! It is wonderful to see the permaculture plan he has come up with for your land. Rudy Poe is very good at explaining what permaculture is and how it benefits the land. The nature, landscape, and animals shots in this video are superb! I'm so glad he is happy with your grass. I always think of the buffalo that built our rich soil in the midwest prarie lands. Love the windbreak idea too. We kept all our trees and really valued them when we moved to out little almost 10 acre hobby farm. Almost everyone else moves to a rural property and cuts down all the trees! Then they plant them again but it'll take decades to grow them back up again. We see it over and over. We knew our trees provided a windbreak and microclimates when we moved here. We love our trees. This was wonderful guys!

I started my project in the central Washington desert about a decade ago, really focusing on the management of land and access, currently capable of diverting and catching over a million gallons of surge coming off of the hillside behind me. The mulched terraces and swales also work to manage the air.. the coldest air from the night settles into these zones and helps to create dew point condensation collection too. Rudy sounds very knowledgeable about these principles of element management. Best of luck in your journey it will be a great experience with family.

Hope you have neighbors, now or in the future that will allow you to help each other. We can live free and independent and still support one another. I live very secluded but welcome trading, sharing and supporting others who still believe in being stewards of the land. I wish you all the best and honor your spirit of loving life.
Paddocks are a great way to raise your animals. We run the cows through one paddock for a week, then the pigs, then the chickens. The cows graze down to nub, the pigs turn over the soil and leave lots of fertilizer and the chickens follow up as a clean up crew. Rotational farming of the animals is just as important as rotating garden planting. You're definitely on the right track. This way we don't have to buy grains.

What a treasure of knowledge this man has shared with you, with us! So happy for you. It was exciting to see the plan and the kids in their future domains.

Excellent. One of the most interesting videos I have seen for a while.
You are living a dream I wish that I could have realised back in my younger days, but there was no affordable or decent acreage of land, no deserts (Hey...I live in England...it's wet! .....I got a decent sandy beach nearby), and a lot of the staples of off-grid living just were not available. And then a mortgage, marriage, kids, work and life.
I'm jealous but I intend to sit here in my little bungalow on the south coast of England and enjoy watching you guys as you progress over the coming years.
Thanks for all the fun so far. All the best with your plans for the future.
