PURE MATHS PORN. Wow. I could literally sense the absence of black rectangles. How many people can say, “What? Past weekend? Oh, just played a few ingenious and genuinely personal homemade maths games from a marvelous mathematician lived a couple centuries ago. You?” Wow. I need to step up my box game. -Phill, Las Vegas
Feels really nice to see that gamification was a thing almost 200 years ago. It's my favourite pedagogical trick for teaching almost any subject. Takes the focus off of the act of learning and adds a short term incentive for getting better. Kids may not be too keen on learning maths, but they're always up for kicking their friends' butts in a maths game.
That and comedy, yeah! Everything we use to communicate is all about making learning engaging, and it feels unfortunate that so many educators don't take themselves seriously enough to be funny. :D
If the Royal Society were to reproduce some of those maths games and commercialize them, they would without doubt be a great succes given the right marketing. The Keith & Brady's Royal Society Magical Maths Box or something of the sort. Can we place orders now ? ☺
Thank you very much Brady for showing us this wonderful insight into an otherwise unknown mind and inviting Matt along for the journey (thanks to Matt as well for accepting). This was very enjoyable.
I wish one day Keith and I will be standing in the vault and Keith will say "and you can choose randomly any of these things just to have a quick look of it". OMG Matt you are so lucky to be there!
This channel is so great! Brady should promote it more on Numberphile or on Hello Internet. It definitely needs more attention than it gets at the moment.
THE RULES OF THE GAME: I think the idea of the game is to take your 8 cards (or however many) and line them up in some order below one and other, say A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H such that (for the numbers on the LEFT hand side ONLY) A+C is a multiple of (A+B+C)/3 (i.e. the mean), but also so that B+D is a multiple of (B+C+D)/3, and so C+E is a multiple of (C+D+E)/3, etc. The info sheet then says to reorder the cards so that the same thing is true for the numbers on the right. I don't know what happens afterwards because we don't get to see the rest of the sheet. It would be cool to get it all scanned, along with the set of cards, so we can try it ourselves :)
3:13 Why does he try to add up three left numbers? The instruction states "the sum of the TWO extremes". I will admit it's a little unclear what is meant by 'extremes' here: It could mean minimum and maximum or could mean top-most and bottom-most as positioned. In either case, if A and B are the 'extremes' included in the sum, then this is equivalent to asking whether there exists a multiplier n such that the other number C = (3-n) * (A + B) / n. Since C is an integer, you need only check n = 1, 3 or any factor of (A+B).
Brady, why are you shaking your head? They were doing the proper thing! arranging the cards for the next person opening that box. and, gotta have them organised! I would do the same probably.
Brady in the background of the end of the video just shaking his head at the camera man as the other two geek out, this is priceless XD
Well... as the author clearly stated, these cards are only for the amusement of children or gentlemen IN ENGLAND!
A librarian and a mathematician walk into an archive...
"OUCH!" they exclaim before quickly resuming their argument over the Dewey Decimal System.
That's a deadly scenario, avoid it at all costs!
Brady's face at the end! :-)
So how about an extended video of them playing with the puzzles?
Matt was an awesome guest for this show. Hope you decide to bring him back some time.
+David Anderson love how hes totally into it
+David Anderson Matt is an awesome educator
David Anderson- for a calculator unboxing

+Pile of carbon I'd be very surprised if gamification wasn't used 50,000 years ago. It's one of the basic methods of teaching children.
John Ridley
and yet too many educators forget to use it. xD
That and comedy, yeah! Everything we use to communicate is all about making learning engaging, and it feels unfortunate that so many educators don't take themselves seriously enough to be funny. :D
Really like how Matt is so excited by it, that you are also excited to check all those puzzles.
I imagine Keith and Matt are still there figuring out all those puzzles
The day I join a secret society, I expect no less than a gentleman like Keith to be the warden of said society.
If the Royal Society were to reproduce some of those maths games and commercialize them, they would without doubt be a great succes given the right marketing. The Keith & Brady's Royal Society Magical Maths Box or something of the sort. Can we place orders now ? ☺
free 4 everybody :D
head-shaking brady in the background of a non-traditional video ending is amazing
If there's a calculator in the Royal Society archives, Matt needs to do an unboxing.
Keith may not be too happy with the durability test though...
Maybe Gaxio is older than we thought?
Next time I want to see a box full of box puzzles.
Matt is like a kid in a candy store :)
Thank you very much Brady for showing us this wonderful insight into an otherwise unknown mind and inviting Matt along for the journey (thanks to Matt as well for accepting). This was very enjoyable.
More with Matt please!
More objectivity, or just videos in general, with Matt!
I wish one day Keith and I will be standing in the vault and Keith will say "and you can choose randomly any of these things just to have a quick look of it".
OMG Matt you are so lucky to be there!

I love that Brady is visible in these videos
I want more info about those puzzles, and preferably some way to play it myself. I'd even make a set in order to try it if necessary.
+Nillie can't like it twice
This one is awesome, looking at matt's enjoyement, this is great

It would be amazing if those cards and his puzzles were digitised so we could all check them out!
I'm puzzled by this whole episode....
I'd love to see more Matt in Objectivity
Why do I now want a copy of that box?
+Rand Huso That would be a good way to raise some cash.
I love the channel cross-over from Matt! Thanks!
I love puzzle boxes! I love Objectivity! I love Matt Parker! I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! :D
Sweet! Now all of the Spoken Nerds team has been on. I hope Katie Steckles shows up next. :)
Man, I love Matt.
I wanna see a video with Matt trying to complete the puzzle! Get on it Brady
one of the best videos, loved it
This librarian guy is the most fascinating figure
Keith is amazing. Needs his own biopic
This channel always puts a smile on my face when watching new videos. Keep it up Brady! (And Keith ofc ;)
Matt got in your happy place and played with Keith!
Strangely the last 24 hours have probably had more people think of him than any other brief moment.
Matt Parker! What a lad!
Don't stop! Matt was still going!
Hopefully Matt will make a video on that puzzle. It's over my head.... but it looks like it got him excited.
Word has it Matt and Keith are still ordering the box of puzzles as we speak and for years to go...
Very nice video, I hope we see Matt in other future episodes :-)
Love the Hello Internet shirt.
Yay Matt Parker
4:46 is the best :-)
"I like this guy"
YES!! MATT PARKER!!!
I got tails on the Numberphile video so I came her. That seems like an awesome box.
I think I had a Mathgasm watching this
Brady, you should trademark the word *_Corner_*.
Is there something special about the number 781? Something for Numberphile!!
awesome!
Sweet shirt Brady
MATT PARKER WOHOOO!
Nice shirt Brady

I want to see the director's cut of this video
hhhh they look like children who found a candy box !!! like it :D 5:02
Are there any calculators in the Royal Society?
Brady, why are you shaking your head? They were doing the proper thing! arranging the cards for the next person opening that box. and, gotta have them organised!
I would do the same probably.
"The 781 maths corner" 1:49
Oh goodness, yet another one of Brady's corners.
#HelloInternet
I want a copy of that card game now...
I'm with you Brady... when they too deep into arithmetic, I go all (shakes head)
Sounds like that guy would have loved Sudoku.
+culwin Not to mention Kenken.
cool, Brady is wearing the same t-shirt as I in the moment :)
I thought that was Bill Nighy at first, straight out of the Van Gogh episode of Doctor Who.
That seems like an interesting puzzle. Does anyone know if it is available anywhere?
A rare mathematical event here... Parker Hair 😀
Brady, if you don't find tidying up a maths box necessary and normal you're hosting the wrong channel.
I wonder... Has Matt ever heard of the game called Rithmomachy?
Who were these boxes made by?
BRADY YOU SHOULD TRADEMARK THE WORD CORNER
Aww Brady, not sharing in the nerdiness this time around? :P
Hello, is there anyone in our archive from Poland?
the cards should spell something funny once organized.
unwrapping a man's mind? and you found numbers? I am definitely living in the wrong century. i am a bit envious.
*Brady shakes head*
Hi Matt
Calling it now, they are going to check out a calculator
Brady why don't you make a video about Prof. Eric Laithwaite
That ending seemed too mathy for Brady. skabdla
That is cool, but I feel like it made for a lacklustre video
Why the hell is he wearing these gloves?
UM... that guy has too much time on his hands
Why do the british say doing the 'maths'? It sounds so weird to me. I do the math.
Maths is short for mathematics. This shortening is to keep the plural in the abbreviation. Before you ask, I'm American.
