Really good interview here with John Stockton who rarely does them. The interview starts at the 6:01 mark.
John discusses his short shorts (6:16), the 97-98 season (7:33), dream team (10:56), his durability (9:40), Chris webber remarks on toughness (12:08), karl malone (14:40), missed shot vs. Bulls (16:48), Tim Donaghy scandal (21:50), a retirement that caught some off guard (28:38).

John was a menace on defense, always around the ball waiting for a sloppy dribble or errant pass. I think he would be even more of a menace in todays game....some kid right outa HS trying to show of his handles and the next thing you know Stock would be getting a layup bucket at the other end....people dont understand...you make once mistake....hang that dribble out a bit to far and he would snatch that so fast.

Jerry Sloan joked about the concern Jazz management had about John Stockton being able to hold up physically at his stature back in 1984 coming out of Gonzaga. Who would have ever thought Stockton would be an iron man, playing in all 82 games in 17 of his 19 seasons. He played with a broken leg in Barcelona on the 'Dream Team'.
Stockton's assists numbers will likely never be touched. In addition, basketball fans should never forget Stockton is also the all-time steals leader as well. His career averages per season take a little dip because he didn't become a full time starter until he was 25 years old in 1987. Stockton played all four years at Gonzaga and Sloan made young players pay their dues (old school). He came into the league in the legendary draft of 1984. John's stats are all the more amazing all things considered.
When the Jazz management finally got the roster support to get the Jazz to the Finals in the late 90's, Stockton was past his prime in his mid thirties. He was still damn good and smart but many forget or didn't see Stockton play in his prime. His stats in the late 80's to early 90's were unbelievable. And he did it with Malone and some rag tag role players before Hornacek came along.
If the Jazz had a supporting cast in Stockton's prime, basketball history would be different. The Jazz did make the Western Conference Finals five times and NBA Finals twice. However, they peaked too late. The Rockets won back to back NBA Titles when Jordan retired the first time. Then they added Barkley to get better. Yet the Jazz beat the Rockets and got the Finals, only Jordan was back in the league again. The Jazz swept the Lakers with Shaq and a young Kobe but ran into Jordan again as well.
Although Stockton was an assist and steals guy, he actually was more aggressive offensively when the game was on the line. Despite Malone being the historic scorer he was, he was not as clutch as Stockton. All the big shots in Jazz history were made by Stockton.
What's crazy about Stockton's numbers is that they came with less possessions compared to other eras. The NBA game was at its' most physical in Stockton's time as well. The ironman held up setting picks on big dudes in Sloan's system and had defenders with hands on him at all times (on and off the ball). Can you imagine Curry playing in this era and not having the freedom to run around unmolested?
These highlights are nice but I think the ones here below are more rare and better. The older stuff wasn't seen much by people in those days. The footage is grainy is some spots but it spans Stockton's full career and not just the 90's. This highlight reel below goes back to 1984 and all the way through Stock's 19 seasons. One more thing to consider; playing until past 40 years of age at the point guard position where some of the best athletes in the world play is ridiculously impressive. Stockton was a much better athlete than people give him credit for. His speed and reflexes in the 80's was epic. Watch this less seen clip. The song 'Simple Man' is perfect! th-cam.com/video/XWd-cVz357w/w-d-xo.html

So gutted they never won a championship. But they toppled some mighty teams in the playoffs. And made the bulls work there asses off to get those wins. He was more athletic than he was given credit for. His first two steps were quick enough to leave any point in the league. He could dunk the ball for sure but didn’t in games because it was more effort and risk. He was was also legendarily strong for his size and was always in extreme condition. No one at that size can do as well as he did without some athleticism.

John Stockton aka The Pasty Gangster! The greatest pure point guard to ever play the game. The assist and steals records prove that; less obvious is how stoic and tough this dude was. That is unheard of now. Magic is the pg that ushered in a new type of player and was transcendent in doing so, but Stock is the best at what the position was and theoretically should be.

Thiago Moraes I think key element here is defense. Magic wasn’t good at defense and a complete baller is the one that does offense and defense by the note and no other point guard like Stockton. Magic was a legend but if I’m building an all time NBA team I’ll surely had the best defender and the unreachable passer cause if he did all that joined by Malone, imagine if he was around more legends like Magic did back in those days.

Arion Diggs it could have been broken if the NBA stayed with the early 2000 rules. Remember Rajon Rondo can drop 25 assist in a game and he did it twice. Once when he was in the celtics & once when he was in the Pelicans but I still believe Bron will kill on this 90s era. Imagine some part of MJ, Stockton,Magic on Karl Malone body.

    • @TheExclusiveOne720

@@pauloaustria7798 trust me, John Stockton has the ONLY two records that will NEVER be broken, steals & assists. I rocks with Rondo but J assure you he wouldn't have broken that assist record
To put it in context, Chris Paul & LeBron are the 2 closest "active" players to Stockton and BOTH of them are still 6,000 behind him.
Rondo has 7,000+ and he's still 8,000 behind, you said Rondo dropped 25 assists twice, yes he did but he would have to have 25 assists per game for 82 games "straight" for almost 4 years straight to catch Stockton

      @rogeliochavez40 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheExclusiveOne720 I gotta control that shit when talking about Malone (every chance I get to mention it I just do it lol).
For the "Malone getting points because of Stockton", here it is; it isn't equivalent: Malone had to get to his spot and there, he could do his moves that mostly consist in triple threat and drives with less than 2 dribbles; most of the work comes from Malone's ability and that's it, he could hold the ball for 7 seconds and shoot it and that would count as an assist even though it was pretty much just Malone's work. Don't get me wrong: Stockton was an elite defender and elite leader; good composure, character and understanding of his team, but that assists record is overrated, I consider Nash, Magic and Kidd better passers.

    Shoots 3s way more accurately.

Basti Basti, true but the crazy thing is that even with all those assists, John would feed Karl at least two more potential assists each game right under the basket where instead of finishing strong, Malone would do the Harden routine of creating contact and then flopping. This happened a couple of times each game and went on and on each season they played together (18 of John's 19 seasons).

G Beez not true at all, sure they were maximized playing with each other, but both would have been All NBA players no matter where they would have played, I'm not saying Malone scores 37,000 points without Stockton for example, say perhaps 32,000, but he still rebounds and plays D. Stockton would still have run most any other team the same way piling up steals and assists, maybe even scoring if he had a coach telling him to shoot it more, Stockton could have easily scored 25 a night if he wanted to and drop down his assists per game numbers.

except for the fact that he didnt have a left hand....look it up...search "john stockton no left hand" I dare you. Sorry...he was not the greatest....not even close!!! Clearly, defenses simply allowed him to pass, while the league gave him credit for assists that he really didnt make. It's not an assist if you pass the ball to a player who has to further create a shot....but time and time again, these are the kind of plays stockton was given credit for the assist. Totally fabrication of a players skills...and no left hand research proves it

They were a great team with one really elite player (Malone), Stockton just played elite. He wasn’t fast, tall, or extremely athletic. Stockton played extremely smart and hard nosed.
If they played anywhere else they’d have a ring. They overplayed and succeeded above their teams skill level.

Stockton was very quick with the ball. Always moving. A shorter Pete Maravich in some ways.

This is a great video. Thank you very much for posting! Love the final shot, too. An imposing Stockton leading Hornacek and Malone over the court. Awesome stuff. Also, the reason for my TH-cam user name would be plastered all over this mix, haha. Stockton is the best.

What a pick up in 84. Lebron may pass Kareem but I don't see anyone ever conceivably beating Stockton's assist record.

You should have put the full audio from the clip when they announced the draft, where everyone was either booing or whoing. The guy who looked like the wrong pick, the unknown guy, the guy that wasnt tall enough to dunk, the guy that looked more like a salesman than a athlete, the guy that rarely talked. He destroyed all expectations, some will never will be broken.

Stockton is probably the most fundamental and durable basketball player of all time. He was like a machine. Can shoot, pass, dribble, and defend about as good as anyone. Out of 5 msjor statistics categories in basketball he is 1st in 2 of them. Assists and steals. Crazy
.To me he is probably the 7th best pg of all time. Only behind Magic, Oscar, Isaiah Thomas, Gary Payton, Allen Iverson , and Jason Kidd and Luka. That's it

I understand people’s argument that Magic is the Greatest. But IMO, It’s Stockton all the way at PG. At that position, you want thee best decision maker. And he was it. All time Leader in Assists and Steals. The two stats that prove he was the best.

I've been searching for this for a minute now, but what I have gathered to this point is it's a rehash of Motion Picture by J Cole/Omen. Whoever Luke Wright is sped it up, added J Cole's voice and some extra drums. The original sample is Thuggin by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib.
