Like many my age, started out with cinder blocks and milk crates ... next, the 80's ushered in a Standesign 5 (quite the stylized slant back piece) ... still end up stacking this and that.
I found the best, lightest, by far sturdiest was the original Black and Decker Work-Mate ... back then I'd stack my mobile DJ gear on it... just a fantastic platform.
I placed four Sims Navcom Pucks under the gear... resulting in full isolation, atop a rock solid platform.

I had this whole crazy blueprint in my head for a modular metal table / shelf combo I was going to build. It probably would have cost an arm and a leg weighed over a hundred pounds. I wound up buying a $20 metal shelf at Home Depot and varnishing a pine board to finish the top. Works perfect.

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who can come up with grandiose building plans, but settles for a simple solution. I like the heavy duty metal shelving supports that include notched ‘straps’ on the wall and tabbed supports which slip in and lock in place -very rigid. Weight ratings are given for each size.

I have and recommend a Quadraspire QAVX because they are wide, and you can get it as high as you want, so you can put everything beside each other so you don't have to stack anything on each other no matter how high the things you want to put in the shelf are. Everything because you can design the bench just as you want it yourself.

Some decent racks I have considered that don't cost an arm and a leg might be vpi brand. The seem to have some flexibility for adding components, and even larger ones for big amps. As a bonus they have vibration built into them when stacking. Hope to maybe give them a try someday. Any one else used these?

Shelf on rubber wheels here - surface contact area is minimal and rubber is immune to transfering high frequency energy in most situations. All industrial and you can find these shelves pretty easy without having to pay crazy sums.. that's midrange hack I guess.. it simply works for me - I further dampen the shelves with certain materials.. nothing crazy. easy to change out , rotate, position ect .

I like the way audio racks look but they don't work well for a 74 year old with iffy eyesight. i stack on top of a 42" X 36" tall home made record cabinet made with 3/4" oak plywood, the left hand stack is Preamp - DAC - SACD transport - Tuner. The turntable is to it's right on the same record cabinet, it's on a 3" thick maple cutting board and has sorbothane hemisperes between the maple cutting board and the TT - it is absolutely stable.
Having anything you have to see higher up is important with the current trend to measly displays that a lot of old farts just cant see well. I found older designs with LEDs illuminating to show what input was active more user friendly and is why I chose the Rogue RP5 preamp over the PS Audio preamp (also got the gently used Rogue at a great price). I've given up trying to make sense of the PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC display and rely on the remote exclusively to control that.

How much volume are those giant speakers capable of? Just seems dangerous or impractical to have those sensitive electronics placed in the direction of the sound coming from them. At least from my perspective, knowing that, if I were to invest such sums of money in audio, I would want the capability of playing at huge volumes with no chance of damaging the driving hardware from the incoming bass and the like. Positioning the dac/amps and sources in a small adjacent room or something would be better imo.

I do a combination of both. 4 Racks in the studio for recorders, amps, turntable, patchbays with audio console and workstation mounted on a raised table and shelf system. 1 Shelf unit (with some stacking) in my listening room for playback equipment, reel to reels, cassettes, turntables, tuners and amps. Racks are utilitarian in looks but hide the cables and snakes behind them while shelves tend to expose the cabling more. Plus racks are situated where they are easy to get behind to modify and adjust the cabling and patching whereas shelves tend to be within 6 inches of the wall which makes rewiring a PIA when needed.

I ISO packs what a load of nonsense all you need is some squash balls a small funnel and some tungsten powder used for golf clubs, make a hole in a ball put in funnel squeeze the ball and fill it up Super Glue the cut you won't get a better isolation foot than that guaranteed maybe Blu-Tack, and well stop them moving about
Let me know if you try it I think you'll be very happy with the results and if you have a turntable put 5-in of cellulose open cell foam underneath or between a isolation platform, good for uneven floors always put some concrete slabs on the bottom of your rack 2" 14" or bigger the rack Paul shows is better than a vertical rack.
You can make your own rack easily enough inch probably minimum chopping boards three quarters of threaded rod height you want it a little bit higher capped off with a captive nut bolt the sections you want together with nuts and washers top and bottom of each section then make an identical one and bolt the two together using two for each section U-brackets like used on exhausts on cars remove the clamp and apply two thick washers place 3" from either end. Make sure you cut all your boards together haha so your holes line up drill out one and use that as the template for the rest do you want to time probably or you could do 2 if you got a press drill use a fastener drill bits prevent tear out, I forgot to say you'll need a strip off wood under the U bracket the thread probably won't be long enough 1" by 2" Square stock be fine you want these fairly tight these brackets 60 Newton metres
