As a Man, I know this is true, because a man's PRIMARY relationship was the one, he had BEFORE a woman was ever created from him: With his GOD.
But the "fallen" man seeks a "female" [Mommie, Wife, Daughter] to be his Primary relationship -- and make "males" his enemy or keep them emotionally distant. The "male" typifies GOD and so this behaviour is in REVERSE from what GOD intended.

From Scripture of GOD persective, Real Love says "I love you because I need you" as a woman was created to be the "helper" of a man. GOD recognized Man NEEDED a "Helper".
And GOD indeed IS = REAL LOVE
And a Boss may "need" his secretary, but NOT because he "loves" her, but because she has the skill set he needs to run a good business.
So depending on the LOVE (how one is defining it, which most all people NEVER do answer the question "What IS Love" that you speak of.
However, whether people realize it or not, people DO "romantically" love those who fufill a "need" in their lives. Whether it's companionship need, convenience need, sexual need, need for comedy (he makes me laugh), need for domination, need to be dominated, need for someone to talk to, need even FOR Love (treasurement). We Treasure people because they fulfill a NEED in our lives.
So it's hard to tell the difference between I love you because I need you and the other way around. If you fill a "need" in someone's life, that can be (and most often IS) WHY they LOVE YOU. You just may not KNOW what that "need" is. Even if it's the "need" to be loved. The two concepts are simply "circular" and entertwined with each other,
Can you see yourself "loving" someone whom you NEED "nothing" from? "nothing" AT ALL? If you do, then you are out of touch with your OWN needs.
"needing" that person for "something" is ALWAYS present when you "Love" that someone.
"I love you because I need you" is = "I need you because I LOVE you" It depends on what your "need" is that makes the first statement a "False" love. If one's need is "money" and that is why I love you, then YES, that is False Love.
"I love you because I need you --for your money.
"I love you because I need you --for your love"
BOTH are "I love you because I need you" statements. But the 1st is false love, yet the 2nd is true love.
But we CAN need someone because we love them (true love), but that is the SAME statement as the 2nd one above (which one may say is false love because of how it's worded"
